As opposed to bankrupting the state? And it is no more threatening than the unions blackmailing the state by threatening to shut down the _____ (fill in the blank with whatever your choice is).
... which the teachers have already done. A lot of them called in sick so the schools had to cancel classes. Sounds like a blackmail tactic to me... How dare they use those poor students as pawns.
Yes it does sound so bad and I AM NOT a big fan of unions. You lose things that you have bargained for and received. In addition you have less bargaining power but by giving this up the state may let you have a job. DeOrc is right. It's blackmail. If it's not so bad then why don't we just apply this to EVERY U.S. citizen and instantly balance the countries budget (or at least make a slight dent in it)?
It's no different than raising taxes actually. Just raise them on a select group for your convenience and hope idiots praise you for not raising taxes. He's effectively raising taxes on union workers and doing it big time.
My belief is that there is a major difference between raising taxes and not spending as much. Again, this is one of the major differences in the liberal/conservative mind set.
The governor had this to say: "I'm just trying to balance my budget," Mr. Walker told the New York Times last week. "To those who say why didn't I negotiate on this? I don't have anything to negotiate with. We don't have anything to give. Like practically every other state in the country, we're broke. And it's time to pay up." It really sickens me, though that those teachers who called in sick and forced the schools to close are using the students as pawns in this. Talk about blackmail...!!!
Have to disagree with you here rlm. When a union makes a decision there are a lot of people involved (as in members). When a governor makes such a decision it is his. This would not be so odd except for the fact that he has made it clear he'll call on the National Guard if necessary and is attempting to make huge changes in 6 days. Can't recall a union ever trying to or even having the power to do that. Can't recall a governor doing it either.
I see what you're saying rlm but, for sake of discussion, just drop the minimum wage by 10 cents per hour? Of course then you're focusing on another group and one that can least afford it. Cutting costs is a great approach if done correctly. Governor Walker has gone about it all wrong I'm afraid. How about this approach? Maybe the Governor and his staff should take some pay cuts? Has that ever happened anywhere? LOL
You really feel that the governor is the only one involved in that decision? As for the unions having the power - remember the air traffic controllers? IMO, a large part of the auto troubles were because the unions could shut down the entire industry. You talked about shutting down sanitation. If I had kids, I would be more concerned about shutting down the schools than sanitation. And so on and so forth.
Let's talk about blackmail. Governor Walker tried to sneak in a fast one, is catching some heat and now it's "poor me". He's just trying to help Wisconsin after all. Gimme a break. He didn't know what was going on when he was running for office? Seems to me teachers are reacting to assinine politics. Today about 30,000 protested in Madison. About 500 firefighters and a few thousand students involved. Poor Governor Walker.
Of course not but he IS THE MAN when it comes to media and decisions. He should have known this when he came in.
Just like the president of the union "IS THE MAN when it comes to media and decisions". BTW, do you really think the governor could do any of this if the legislature were against him? I don't know how Wisconsin is set up, but in most states (all?), they are the ones with the fiduciary strings and the POWER to override just about anything the governor does. If they were against it, I will bet they could pull the rug right out from under him. And are you trying to imply that he did not know any of this and his plan just came out of the blue? I really doubt that.
What demands were the Unions making before the Gov made his declarations? had they done a walk out before they were threatend with the National Guard or been fired if they failed to Obay the Governor? if the answer to either is NO then they are reacting to threats
And the significance of "reacting to threats" is? Again, the governor does not make any law to be obeyed. The elected legislature does. Oh, and nothing I know of permits the union personal to violate the law whether or not it is "reacting to threats".
The real crime here is that a Wisconsin Governor has to be in office 1 year before a recall election can be held. I wonder how much damage this guy can do in that year? He is certainly getting off to a good start.
Funny that your party didn't take that attitude when Obama was overwhelming elected into office but chose to be obstructionist A-holes against the wishes of the American people. How convenient that winning a midterm, which has happened to almost every party in power during the election cycle, is now a mandate for you revisionist masters. I just have to keep asking why your party hates working people so much? I guess if a million people lose their jobs, “So be it!” So a 42% turnout for the midterms is a mandate for Republicans while a 62% turnout for the presidential race just means that Republicans have to be obstructionist A-holes. Interesting how your logic fails you frat boy.
Even funnier how your party did take that attitude. And even funnier how that has nothing to do with the question you asked. Back to the insult again, huh?
You know, if you think about it, this is a very stupid question. As a member of the party in question and speaking for myself, I don't hate working people, heck, I am a working person! This is an argument that really shows the intelligence of the folks who make it. "Republicans are only for the rich", well I'm not rich but I believe Republican/Conservative policy is way better for our country than Dim/Lib policy, plus it's a proven fact that Dims hold the majority of wealth in this country. It's pure lib/progressive/dim propaganda that people have siezed on over the years.
And now Obama has come out against the governor. But, that's only because he's in the pocket of the rich unions. It makes me laugh.
