It is a very short list indeed. You constantly here liberal politicians and talking heads on cable television preaching that George W, Bush should have "worked" with our "European allies" in his efforts to deal with the Iraq problem. Cooperate indeed! The so-called United Nations Oil For Food Program is just now being subjected to close public scrutiny. The Volker Report is appalling. There were 65 countries "on the take" with Saddam Hussein. No wonder we got so little help. There were only three nations officially blocked from Iraqi oil contracts during the late Saddam era: the United States, Great Britain, and Japan. Here is a Global Security article on the Volker Report. http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/library/news/iraq/2005/10/iraq-051028-voa01.htm Good on Great Britain and Japan. Do you remember the 16 infamous (hollow) United Nations Security Council resolutions? There are still a few honorable nations.
Good points ,Quick Dog. I have been trying to communicate the point to some leftist that it is actually to the best interests of some of our so called allies for us not to do well since we are economically competeting with each other and they feel that they no longer need us. Never mind that native europeans are not having kids and are not replacing their population which means they are for the most part living for today and could care less about tommorrow. Socialism mixed with economic success in the short term makes a comfortable society and in the long term self destructs. We have some socialist disasters here as well. Just look at the housing projects and welfare. Great for the short term. Long term. Well I think we all know about learned helplessness, generational welfare, kids having babies, etc......
Hmm.. American Allies... depends if you mean go into a new war, or come to our aid in case of WWII situation. A lot of nations of the world, at least the ones that owe us money think we are the bad guys (lately more or less for good reason), so i'll say if its a WWII, i'd say lots.. invading a new proclaimed addition to the empire of evil, I'd say just Great Britain, and thats only while Tony Blair is in my .01
I do not think that we would stop been allied to you if Blair was removed tomorrow we have too much in common for that to happen. De Orc
Let us not let those others forget De Orc that Socialist France did not put up much of a fight against Hitler and Vichey France actually allied their navy to him. Let us not let the others forget that Spain stayed out of World War II. Let us not let the others forget that the evil soviets were allies, in at least with peace pacts, with Hitler before he invaded Russia. Let us not forget that the arab nations were allies with Hitler until the last days of the war. Let us not forget that Italy was allies with Hitler. That Romania was allies with Hitler. That Sweden stayed neutral but made a ton of money. Etc........ I could go on but basically in regards to any world war comments or facing off evil. Great Britian and the United States have always been at the forefront with protecting democracy or trying to ensure a safer world. And in regards to Great Britian once being an empire. Some leftist might bring that up. Well they build roads, schools, railroads, intra-stucture, and functioning governing agencies and left functioning democracys behind as they left those area.
I have come to the conclusion that you don't have any idea what you are talking about, or else it's what the modern education has made you believe. In either case, you are totally wrong. America when into WWII because of Japan and the bombing at Pearl Harbor, Dec 7, 1941. Japan being allies of Germany made it possible for the USA to send troops into Africa to help the Britsh with Rommel and his panzer divisions. Italy came next and it was after that that we finally went into Europe and pulled the French bacon out of the fire. As for the French, I've always felt that they made better enemies than they did allies. Now when it comes to Tony Blair it makes no difference who is the Prime Minister, as they would only continue the friendship as in the past. So, for allies now, I would only count the countries of England and it's many part like Australia, Canada and New Zeland, then there is Israel who are more than willing to help, Japan will aid as far as non-combatant assistance goes, and yes, even Russia will be in there helping as they also have something to loose if they don't play ball. Screw the rest of them as we are better off with out any of the others. Just as long as they pay back all they owe this country and never ask for any more.
Quick someone, put a basket over this guy, his light is shining so bright it almost hurts the eyes. I repeat "the dumming down of America".....
Amazing. The initial question was written in present tense, and yet all that comes to some people's minds is a war that ended 60 (sixty) years ago. Remembering history, and learning from it, sure is important - but perpetuating a world view from the first half of the previous century seems strange to me. Especially when for some it serves as a base of who could possibly your country's allies today ... Christian
I look at the curent situation as a worldwide "street fight". I view most Europeans are the sort of men that stand around on the outside of a big fight to see who will ultimately win, and then make peace overtures to the winner. Europeans have always been more concerned about money and immediate gratification than ethics or loyalty. At least that's my biased impression. The United States is basically fighting WWIII alone, with of course help from certain members of the United Kingdom. Continental Europe appears to believe that they have little to lose (at the moment) from Islamic fashism. The Europeans are content to allow the USA to shoulder the entire financial and human burden of fighting radical Islam. The United Nations Oil For Food Program is the most obvious, and best-documented, example of this strange world alliance. A major point to remember. Saddam Hussein is responsible for the deaths of about two million people in the Middle East, give or take a few hundred thousand. Snipes that attempt to equate President George W. Bush and concerted American efforts to correct this world-problem are being silly. That is as politely as I can state this obvious fact.
Old Dan, that was an imitation of our president's speech patterns. And, by the way, dumming is spelled incorrectly.
With talk like that, I assume that you have the equivalent of degrees from Harvard and Yale and a massively sucessful 30-year career. Some light reading to emphasize the problem. http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/sc...donesian-attack/2005/10/29/1130400398091.html
09S-V.D.B I am sorry to see that you dont think the UK's contribution to Iraq & Afhghanistan counts as been Allied to your country, perhaps you would care to share your reasoning whith the families of UK service personel who have lost there lives or sit down with them who have lost limbs and say it?? De Orc
If all US citizens thought like that, it would be high time for our troops to leave Afghanistan where Germany alone has more than 2,000 soldiers (soon to be 3,000) as part of ISAF. You may be surprised to hear that it's not the American taxpayer who pays for that, or for the German and other European participation in missions such as KFOR/EUFOR or Enduring Freedom. Dealing with terrorism has a high priority here, not just since Madrid, though we do a few things differently from how the US administration acts. In my opinion the continuation of the transatlantic cooperation makes a lot of sense, but it is difficult if allies are not seen as partners but as people who you can lie to if that might help you achieve your goal. I hope both American and European governments have learned from the mistakes that they made in the recent past. Christian
I am in awe of the men and women who risk their lives and who sacrifice them in protection of their homelands. These troops deserve much more credit and attention publicly than they currently recieve. It's just that this Middle East war has become ridicoulous. George Bush started the war to finish off his father's halfa$$ job and dragged these men and women into the war. In Iraq, our original objectives were to capture Osama (in regards to the 2001 attack), Sadam, and a lengthy list of known terrorists and then set up a democratic nation. Well, I would say that these objectives have been accomplished and every casualty should be blamed on George Bush henceforth. In fact, George Bush should be charged with murder, because frankly, that is all this has become. I meant no disrespect to soldiers who have been injured or killed since these wars began, De Orc. As i said, I am in awe of them. America's only real ally is Israel, possibly Australia. Without Blair, Britain would just be another nation in the blend.
The US people and others were hot and wanted revenge after 911, now that were in there the people have softened-up!, another Nam!Look, the Sadam guy was a Bumb! and a murderer, and these other followers of mohamad are selfish and EVEL!I support 100% ridding the peacefull world of so called leaders of god, yea right,if they loved God so much they would be doin the opposite of car bombs and such.......never give up the fight!!!!!!!!!!!as Bush says and I agree.
you Do you realise that Tony Blair is a scocialist prime minister dont you ? and how do you come by the idea that Britain under any other leader would just be another nation in the blend?? also for the record it is Britain and not England that Blair is the Prime Minister of. Name me a single Prime Minister who has not backed the USA since the second world war? You say that Israil and possibly Australia are your only allies Man you dig a deeper hole for yourself every time you post. I had forgoten to mention the rather large German contingent In Afhganistan along with the Italians and Spanish who served and died in Iraq. I dont fully agree with how things are progressing and honestly wish that your polititians had had the nerve to follew Baroness Thatcher when she wanted to deposse Sadam the 1st time round. but we have to draw a line somewhere. De Orc
The American military has near 150,000 troops in Iraq, yet only 20,000-40000 chasing Osama and his terrorist organizations. We should take revenge, but at this point it doesn't look like we are.
sorry, no offense meant to anyone. My badly directed point was that with the current "damn all their opinions, and their torpedoes" U.S. policies it is getting harder and harder to maintain better than cordial relations to those we were previously allied with. My wife is Canadian and I can tell a distinct difference in the "huggy huggy American scale" there from 911 to now.
