That week you put up the disturbed version of this I was thinking about posting this. This old vid is crazy. I remember it on MTV in 80's when I was a teen. Ends with Ronnie (Big Government) Reagan pushing THE button at the end. Good song.

Hahahahaha.. I haven't seen this vid in over 20 years. I think it gave me nightmares as a kid.

I always liked the song and the video. It's amazing how relevant it was when it was made by Genesis relating to the cold war and now it's just as relevant by disturbed in relation to the war on terrorism and how world politics are today. 20 years later.

 

No doubt. The more things change the more they stay the same. Cept MTV seems to have everything but videos anymore. Censorship?

I like the monkey. The "Bedtime for Bonzo" movie reference.

 

I like the monkey too. Several of my friends didn't get it.

As for Mtv, it's sad that they had to create Mtv2 to see videos. I remember in the 80's, I would go out for the weekend and record Headbanger's Ball. I loved that program. Glad they have it on Mtv2. I DVR it sometimes but it's not as good as it was back then.

 

I think it has less to do with censorship and more to do with most artists not putting any effort into making decent videos anymore.

So the crap MTV does play makes them more money than videos. cause no one want to watch the same crap over and over.

What killed Mtv(1) is that too many stupid kids watched, and gave better ratings to the game shows, fashion shows, reality shows, etc... than the actually video portion of programing. Mtv then got so many complaints about not showing videos that they had to create a new channel for just videos, Mtv2.

As for OK go. This is a great story. One of the band members sister did the choreography of the video and complete self promotion, via internet, completely sticking it to the RIAA and the big record companies.

I agree with that, but put a share of the blame on the artists.


Videos used to be cool. Look at that Genesis video. It is creative, it took effort. It isn't just Phil Collins and the guys walking around their house, or showing off their "bling." Some used to be little mini-movies that could last longer than the song it was for. I think of the Thriller video, Dire Straits "Mony for Nothing", Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher", and tons and tons of other quality videos. Effort put into them to make them more than just a outlet for selling the song.
Fatboy Slims video with Chris Walken (Weapon of Choice) is one of the coolest videos ever- and Fatboy Slim isn't anywhere in it:

I completely agree. We used to have music video directors that would go on to major tv and movie directors. (Hell John Landis did Michale Jackson's Thriller, and had done Animal House and American Werewolf In London.)

As for FB Slims vid, it had two things going for it. 1 = Good music, 2 = Chris Walken is a f'n Stud.

 

I'm thinking it had to do with money. These vids sold millions of albums. People didn't/couldn't download music at that time. They used to spend fortunes on these things. Ahhhhhh.. the good ol' days.

 

Then why did you blame it on censorship?
