..if the pres and cong can not make nice it could put a stop to this war once and for all (no money no war). I just can't see Bush pushing a "no strings" funding bill through this congress.
What if no one blinks? It could get real ugly. Selfishly, I am thankful that I am not do to go again until late this year/early next. I don't have any issues with returning again. But I remember being on a remote in Korea in the mid 90ies and a budget standoff came pretty close to us running out of money and possibly even stopping payrolls. That was a huge deal. I don't even want to imagine what it would be like if you were in a war zone and there wasn't enough money left to continue operations, etc.
Yeah and leave everyone over there with no resupply ability or extraction ability? Or maybe we drain all the money out of the US based forces first? Or we stop payroll? Or we abandon Korea? Or? Or? Or? It's not quite that simple.
Oh. And I just read on CNN... "In a separate development Thursday, the House voted 397-27 to pass legislation authorizing $646 billion in defense spending for the 2008 budget year, which begins October 1. The bill includes $142 billion in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan." I don't know the details but is this whole thing all just a political posturing match about the funding from now until the end of this Sept? Do you really think the war is just going to end?
Where does the money for it come from if no funding bill gets passed? Keep in mind, I am going off the idea Danr proposed...no money no war.
I am not sure that is entirely true. I would like to see something to back that up. I think they are mostly funded though supplements but I am not sure how that applies to what is being discussed. I do not believe there is anything that says the President cannot use money from elsewhere in the budget to fund the war until that money runs out too.
the president can bypass congress in certain situations, i beleive that lbj did it back in the day. Not saying that is the right way to do it, but...
The war will not end when we pull out of Iraq. This war started over a thousand years ago and has spread across the global until the force behind it came to our shores, first with the killing of Robert F. Kennedy in Califorina all the way up to the plan attack on Ft. Dix. With explosions, grey hound bus driver slashings, Washington D.C. snipers, and of course the two World Trade Attacks with hundreds more attacks thrown into the mix. The war will not end when we leave Iraq. The question is are we fighting the war correctly. Are we using our resources correctly as well as do we have the fiber to really fight a war for so far the military has shown that it does but the politicans on both sides have not.
True but... I don't think there is anything that says the President cannot take money from other parts of the DoD budget and put it towards the war. This is a supplemental bill for extra money for the war, I believe. The DoD has other operational money from the normal yearly budget and, as I posted before, the House has already passed a new budget for the fiscal year starting in Oct that includes money for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I am sure there will eventually be a compromise on this current funding bill that either the President will sign or can be veto over-ridden in Congress but it is not a simple situation of no money, no war.
You'd never really have guessed that the Republicans want to win by the way their Commander-in-Chief has gone about conducting this war. Republicans seem like they want to save face win or lose but with no military solution possible and no new ideas, it just same ol, same ol. No new strategies, no new plans, no coherent policy of any kind. And you say Republicans want to win? I'm not convinced. The situation in Iraq is worse everyday but Republicans are too damn subborn to admit it and would rather throw more money and American lives at the problem than admit their mistakes. That kind of cynicism is why this country is turning against this war. It's not because anyone is eager to lose a war, how stupid is that logic? It's because real leaders can lead and accomplish, Bush can only say, "Mission Accomplished". Bush seems to love plain talk so I'm guessing you Bush lovers will too. The last war we lost under a Republican had it's die hard supporters long after it was lost too. We could simply blow the whole country up and leave and call it a victory but you have to ask what price is too high to achieve victory. What you people that want to continue this war don't seem to realize is the cost and not just the financial cost. We are a rich country and could throw money at this effort for many years and slowly drain our economy. The real cost is all the disabled soldiers that will need medical care long after this war is out of our memories. The families of the dead that will spend years grieving their lost loved ones. The children that will not grow up with one of their parents. And those are just the lives touched on the American side. You sit here and debate the cost of withdrawal and losing this war while more and more people are added to the list of the disabled, the grieving, and the children missing a parent. You never talk about those costs and seem to only crave more war for what seems like misguided machismo. Your pathetic concerns regarding your political party and your allegiance to your past military service are enough to make me sick. You are so blinded by your own sense of glory you can't recognize your fellow citizens are suffering and dying and leaving families who need them because you are so horny for victory that isn't even defined. I think people like you should be lined up and summarily shot in the head. You don't seem to be using them anyway. Enough George Bush style straight talk.
