First I'll toss this in Coin. No offense meant but a valid point I believe.

So back to your question. If you look at this in black and white you have described the "employee from hell!"

I can't honestly say that I've had one that bad but a few had the potential, and yes, I fired them.

Looking at the paramaters you have "set" firing that employee would be a no brainer.

However we're not just talking about one employee at Walmart are we?
    Why is this happening?

When I was managing it was at a store level. At any time the most employees "under" me was 8-10.

At that level it's pretty easy to spot the "employee from hell".
At that level 1 out of ten is 10%.

I've never been a CEO, Company President, Company Vice President, Regional manager, District manager etc. Have you?

Probably not. So let's look at this as neophytes shall we?

Suddenly you, or I, is thrust into the position of Walmart Grand Poobah!

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of employees are walking off on the biggest day of the year.
Do you routinely just fire them all? How quickly can you "fill their shoes"?
These aren't just new hires either. Some of these folks have worked there for twenty years or more.

There are so many ways to look at the "problem" at this point.

First. Just fire them all and replace them. Company policy and bye bye. Probably not to wise though.

Second. Fire the newbies. Easier to replace and people need jobs.
Of course you have to spend money to train them and in a pinch how many will give you back what the company invested?

    Third. Fire the "long timers".
They get bigger pay and most likely some benefits. Fill the slots with "up and comers". Then fill their slots with new hires. Oops more money to be spent

Fourth. Just fire them all and don't replace them.
Certainly cuts costs. Probably retail as well.
That would be great for consumers for a while I reckon. In the long run though a lot more unemployed people.

Five. Listen to the employees on rare occasion. It's not like this "strike" was/is a secret.

    Sixth. We'll see won't we.

Sam Walton is rolling in his grave.
