The shia sect started with arabs and was spread into Persia for Persia controlled parts of Iraq during that time period. I am rusty on the details but I had studied Islam many years ago. However, a persian and an arab are very much different in their eyes and we are talking about a part of the world that is very clanish, tribal etc..
Iraq has done alot to aid terrorist and we have convicted Iraq agents in jail today in the United States for planning and carrying out terrorist acts before 911. Perhaps that could be another thread in the future.
Oh PLEASE Andy! If you can find a more fair, more objective, more inclusive and more rational radio program out there, point it out to me. Don't bother, you can't do it. You're just spouting the extreme rightwing's mantra without even stopping to think about what it is you're against. I've listened to programs with points of view from EVERY reasonable angle on NPR. There isn't another radio program that even comes close to NPR's integrety. Certainly not those screaming rightwing lunatics that rave against any point of view not their own. Talk about agendas. Thank God those idiots will be long gone while NPR is thriving and keeping the airwaves honest. Andy, you have a typical rightwing closed mind and you just look for those opinions that agree with what you think you already believe. Simple answers, simple answers to life's tough questions.
Actually, I agree with Andy. NPR does have a nice liberal slant to it's programming. I listen to it to get a sense of what the other side (myself being a conservative) thinks about issues. I do agree, though, that they do a nice job a lot of the time giving conservatives a chance to speak and debate. It doesn't change the fact that the majority of what they're saying has a leftist slant. ~AJ
I wish NPR's slant was only liberal but they go way past liberal. Anyway why should a tax supported station have any slant in either direction and why if I point out that it slants way to left would the left accuse me of being right. What is wrong with a source of news that is just factual, especially one that is being funded by our tax dollars. Also why was the fact that I pointed out ignored. They do or did have a convicted cop killer who is still imprisoned on the air as a regular show spouting his racially leftwinged charged agenda.
Who cares, is the more important question. It's called freedom of speech, one of our most important ideas in this country. Conservatives have had just as many questionable people on their media sources who spout a highly right-wing conservatively-charged agenda. If I don't like it, I change the station/channel. If you don't like the cop-killer on the radio, change the station.
That is why America is like it is...people are too lazy to do something about this type of thing...a cop killer shouldn't be out running around doing a radio show...I could go on but won't. Speedy
NPR are not liberal except when Daine Rehm talks about lesbians with kids. Andy you are thinking of Air America. NPR are the objective ones, Air America are openly liberal (they are the ones with Al Franken)
No, Spencer, you are wrong. It's not that I'm "too lazy to do something about this type of thing." It's that I believe in personal freedoms, including freedom of speech, and I believe that the "cop-killer" has the right to speak on a radio show if he chooses and the radio station will accomodate it. America is the way it is because some people like to restrict others' ability TO speak and be heard. ~AJ
This is not a Freedom of Speech issue. I do not know if you realize that NPR is funded in a large extent by money collected from our taxs. That is why they are called "National Public Radio". Since they are supported by taxes they should not have an agenda either left or right but just present facts as objectively as possible. As for Air America, that is the Freedom of Speech issue for they are private and have a right to do what they do and of course do it to low ratings.
I will...Frankly, I've met cops that needed killin'. Sounds extreme I know but they ain't all saints. I don't know the situation behind the NPR guy but I have recently felt a whole lot less sorry for cops. They can be as criminal as the people they are supposed to be stopping. And it isn't as rare as you'd think.
The cop and his partner were abush when they got out of their car in Philly to answer a phone call of help. They were set up to die as they went to help. The cop killer did his scheduled broadcasts from death row via phone. Why should my tax payer dollars give or gave that killer the opportunity to rant revolution on the air. I am not sure if he is still on. I'll look it up later.
Well, then if I were you I would imagine that your tax dollars were going toward saving kittens from trees, and I'll let MY tax dollars support freedom of speech. That ought to help!
Ok. It is simple. When a private group airs Air America and pays for the airing of it themselves, that is freedom of speech. When government money is being spent to present an agenda that is not freedom of speech but a misuse of public funds. Do you not remember the mini-scandal when government money went to reporters who wrote favorable articles that supported Bush's agenda? This is the same thing with the left that is controlling NPR with who they hire and what gets on the air but to a vast larger extent.
Well Danr, they present a controlled leftwing bais inbetween classical music recordings. But if someone has a left wing mind frame then I guess they would seem objective for they are saying what that person wants to hear. Now I have no problem with Air America. They are not funded with government money. They do not hide who they are, which is uncommon for the left, and they have the freedom of speech to say what they say. By the way the the cop killer was Mumia aba Jamal and he was part of the "All Things Considered" and Prison Broadcast shows. Now since he is a member of the Black Panthers, and a convicted cop killer at that, do you really thing his views were objective and why should my tax money go to produce that type of show.
Andy, once again you show your ignorance of this topic. Here's how this is simple: When a private group airs material by paying for it out of their pockets, that is freedom of speech. When government money (i.e. MY taxpayer dollars, along with a fraction of every other one of the 200 million working people in the country) is used to pay for airtime for any kind of message, that is freedom of speech. And I'll even tell you why: the First Amendment to the United States Constitution says quite clearly: "The Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press..." It DOES NOT say that the Congree shall make no law prohibiting free speech unless government monies are used, and it DOES NOT say that the Congress shall make no law stopping the govenment from pushing any kind of agenda or allowing any person who wishes to have airtime to have airtime. Honestly, like I said, I don't see anything wrong with allowing taxpayer monies to allow controversial people or viewpoints to have airtime on any type of media. It's a violation of the Constitution to stop people from speaking based on the fact that YOU don't like who they are (called discrimination) or what they have to say. ~AJ
