What I am trying to state is that being born into an environment where a person is in good schools from the begining and has exposure and connections to potential jobs is a bigger advantage then having government aid.

In my own way I am agreeing with your statements that being born white is an advantage but now the question is, was that advantage earned since for the last 35 years that advantage should have evened with all the changes in our society.

The advantage already existed for white people. The playing field is more even that it used to certainly, but I can still say without doubt that there are plenty of people in all walks of life that still discriminate against people based on race. Look at Dan...A perfect example.

I have looked at Dan and his avatar shows a very nice looking man with an easy going attitude. :)

Racism exists in the black community as much as it does in the white community.
I think the biggest problem for the black community is the welfare system that teaches by its existance learned helplessness and dependness.
Get rid of the welfare system and bring in a work program and in forty years there would be no difference economically between the black and white population with the exception of that one percentile which no one here belongs to. At least that is what I think.

In all reality this point is blown far out of proportion... really it only ever effected the marginal students anyway.

Colleges don't turn down students if they can avoid it, so when they need to get selective, they start with the bottom - so if anything, blame the students that didn't get in, because they were on the bottom, and didn't try as hard as the students that were on the top.

I think that if you feel diacrimination is wrong, it is not a phobia, it is only an opinion. Now to repeat myself, the only thing you really know about me is I don’t happen to like stupid people, they **** me off. Moan is a good example!

That's why I didn't quote you, Moen. If silver spoon had had " " around it, then you would have known that I was quoting you.

No, I don't think you do. Where were you born and how did you grow up? I'm betting it wasn't in the slums. Your view is skewed, and I will go "indignant white guy" (please note the quotation marks) on you any time I well please with your comments being such as these are.

Isn't political correctness just good manners?

So you're basing your opinion of him on his cartoon avatar???? I guess I must be a grounds keeping Scotsman to you then. Forget his stupid avatar. Look at his racist comments and arrogant "stupid people p*** me off" attitude. I'll give him one thing, he's very good at manipulating people. Probably a control freak.

I understand what Rick is saying. I would be mad as hell if someone took my spot in a school I wanted to attend and gave my spot to a minority just for the sake of diversity. And I do believe in diversity, it would just be a bitter pill for me personally to swallow.

I'd bet anything that the number of actual students that can't get into any school because of minority set asides is pretty darn low. You'd have to wonder about how well they did in high school I think. Quotas are probably the worst idea that has ever been attempted in the civil rights movement, but it's better than doing nothing at all. And sometimes I think that's what it's detractors are advocating.

So you are saying here that discrimination is O.K. You're pro-discrimination. You're on the discrimination bandwagon.

I'll tell you in no uncertain terms. DISCRIMINATION BASED ON ONE'S RACE, RELIGION, ETHNICITY, ETC., is just plain ignorance. I do know you well enough to know that you are intolerant of those that you view as different from yourself. Here's something you should know about me. I'm intolerant of bigotry. A label I have given you that you have never denied. Maybe it is that you recognize this quality in yourself and are proud of it. That's just ugly.

Well, maybe you're right and there was some miscommunication there. I don't really know.

Coming from a blue collar family with 9 kids, I've known a bit of adversity in the mixed nieghborhood that I came from but I can't say that I have ever lived in a slum. Through hard work and putting myself through school, I have "elevated" myself to upper middle class I guess but I have never forgotten where it was that I came from. So I do know what I am talking about when I say that it is harder for a minority to better themselves than it is for people like us that were born white males. I wouldn't say it if I didn't know.

Moen, I didn't know you were Scotish. Do you know Ian?

Danged if I know Andy, I guess you must have felt that you had good enough reason to do it, and that is all that counts.

Guess we should ask wiggle-and-shake, he has an answer for everything.
