Here is an excellent book and a galloping read which scientifically points out the climactic cycles the planet has gone thru over the past 20,000 years. The evidence studied is based upon various human habitation sites planet wide and how they dealt with the warming and cooling in each respective location. This book points out many mini cooling (1945-1970) and warming periods which are convientially left out of the current (politically driven) mind set. A highly recommended read. http://www.amazon.com/After-Ice-Glo..._bbs_sr_1/105-3489014-5985245?ie=UTF8&s=books Take Care Ben
Steven Mithen is an Archaeologist not a Climatologist. He mostly writes about prehistoric cultures. If this is your idea of proof that there is no such thing as global warming, I'd bet you haven't even read the book.
He wears the (that would be paleoclimatologist) hat in this book and confers with experts in the field as well. I sugest you broaden you mind and get the book Ben
Like I said in the other thread, it is no longer a question of whether its occurrung, it is occurring and you can believe what you want. The rest of us are moving on to solutions to the problem not mired in the useless debate over what is right in front of our eyes. I don't have to be up to my to my eyeballs in sea water before I can accept the truth. You keep believing your administration in the White House if that is what you must do. People like you won't get in the way of a solution once they have been thrown out of power in Washington. You gotta wonder what the motive could possible be for some of these folks. Just plain old greed I'm guessin'. :desk:
I wonder, Could we start a 'politics/religion' poll and ask how many people think global warming is not happening?, or are the polls for coin related subjects only?
Well, this is a different thread. A more informed thread and there is nothing to worry about because it's a natural cycle. One the earth has gone thru time and time again. We should be more concerned about Global Dimming !
Warming and Cooling trends There are (at least) six different major influences on global-scale climate changes. Three are orbital parameters (ellipticity, obliquity, and precession) which vary on different time scales of 20,000 to 100,000 years, and over which we have no control whatsoever. These are considered to be responsible for the major warming AND cooling shifts in climate from glacial to interglacial epoch. Another is changes in the irradiance of the sun, which is very slowly warming over a period of millions of years as the hydrogen fuel is depleted and the helium fuel cycle begins to be more dominant. This has a slow warming effect on very long time scales. Another factor is the aerosol content of the atmosphere... basically from volcanoes with the recent addition of industrial emissions... which has a cooling effect by increasing the reflectivity of the atmosphere. And finally of course we have the greenhouse gas issue, in which certain gases (primarily CO2 and CH4) act to retard infrared radiation from the earth's surface, and thereby warm the planet. Increases in these gases are related to warming temperatures. To start with, we must recognize that the greenhouse effect is a good thing! If there were NO CO2 or CH4 in the amosphere, scientists calculate the global average temperature would be so low that a permanent ice age would envelop the entire world. So we should be thankful that there exists a mechanism whereby the temperature can be held such that water is liquid. The "global cooling" theory is based on the orbital cycles mentioned above. It is a valid theory and according to those cycles the earth should already have begun a cooling trend into the next ice age. The fact that it has not happened does not invalidate the theory... it simply means that the theory did NOT include the effect of increasing greenhouse gases. It has become a scientific certainty that the anthropogenic (human caused) increase in greenhouse gases is responsible for both the negation of the expected cooling trend, AND the increase in temperature above and beyond what would be expected based on the increase in solar irradiance. There are huge amounts of data regarding these factors, and there exists no real scientific uncertainty about it. The only uncertainty is how to respond the the challenge that it poses to our species.
