Wheaton College, an evangelical liberal arts school in Illinois, asked a Washington, D.C. federal court on Wednesday for an emergency injunction against the Obama administration's contraception coverage mandate because the rule forces the school to cover emergency contraception, which it believes causes abortions, or pay immediate fines.

But Wheaton's health plan already covered emergency contraception when the mandate was announced, a spokesperson for its legal team told The Huffington Post, and tried to scramble to get rid of that coverage in order to qualify for the one-year reprieve President Barack Obama put in place for religious institutions that have moral objections to contraception.

"In order to be eligible for the safe harbor, the institution has to certify that it has not covered contraceptives after February 10, 2012," said Emily Hardman, communications director for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. Wheaton didn't qualify because "for a short time after February 10, Wheaton's policies inadvertently covered emergency contraceptives. Wheaton was in the process of fixing that error in February, but it was not fixed before the cutoff date."

Wheaton is one of several religious institutions, including Roman Catholic dioceses, schools, charities and health care agencies currently suing the Obama administration over the rule, which went into effect Wednesday.

Hardman did not respond to further questions as to how long the school had covered emergency contraceptives before the mandate was issued, and a spokesperson for Wheaton referred The Huffington Post back to the Becket Fund for comments regarding the school's lawsuit.

Kyle Duncan, general Counsel for the Becket Fund, called emergency contraceptives "abortion-inducing drugs" in a press release and suggested that the school was considering dropping its entire employee health plan over the mandate.

“Everyone knows Wheaton is a school that lives out its faith," Duncan said. "But today our government is telling Wheaton it is not ‘religious enough’ to have a conscience, and so can be forced to participate in abortions or face heavy fines. Wheaton has always provided generous employee benefits, but now the government is forcing it to choose between caring for its employees and honoring its faith.”

Eh, in one sense it's a win-win for the Democrats. If the Democrats succeed in allowing for easier access to contraception, it's a plus ...but even if they lose it'll create more Democratic voters in the future. Win-win lol

How does this have anything to do with any religion and not the organization itself. Why do you persist in being so arrogant, rude, intolerant, and a right royal son-of-a-bitch? What do you get out of being so malignant?

If pointing out blatant hypocrisy makes me arrogant, rude, intolerant, and a royal son-of-a-bitch, then GUILTY!!!

However, if religious organizations such as Billy Graham U want to enter into the theater of politics they might want to lift up their own rugs and see what kind of dirt they themselves have swept under it.

My question now and in the past, that nobody seems to be able to answer is, if all contraception is against their religion then why is making it part of their medical benefits package an issue? Their "flock" will certainly abide by their beliefs and not take advantage of the coverage in the first place. There are tons of medical procedures and coverage’s that are never used by the vast majority of the policy holders in any given medical insurance plan. So what difference does it make if their plan covers something that they will not use anyway? Nobody buys a medical insurance plan to only cover the medical procedures the will use, they buy medical coverage to cover medical procedures the may use if necessary.
Are these religious organizations making the rest of us enforce their beliefs by restricting the choices of their employees, even the ones that aren't part of their religion? How is that right?

Well thank you for that HM if you want me to behave in that fashion I can do. A few threads back you complained about people insulting others and how you were against such things!! Yet here you are having a pop at me for no reason at all and been very insulting to Joe who has every right to post in this part of the forum. I do think that you need to back up a bit here and take a good long look at your actions.

I'm not really sure what a royal son-of-a-bitch is but I think HM just called my deceased mother both a queen and a female dog. Hum? Maybe I should have reported her. Naw! She is entitled to her opinion. :D

I'm still marveling at how she got clembo to use exclamation points...with BIG letters even...and underscored. (looks up and around) Did...Clarence get his wings, or something?

Have you guys noticed how many threads just tend to die off once iqless starts with his inane drivel? Now I don't agree with lil joe moen very often but I do seem to remember him taking iqless to task for stupid, meaningless posts. I see what he means now.

I hope that you can also see that you are completely wrong about me. But I doubt it.

Why can't you ever just discuss the issues? You always have to bring everything down to the personal level.

It's hard to say David. After all you just posted in this one.

I get your point though. There's another guy here that starts threads that get maybe a few, if any, replies here on a fairly regular basis.
Not even IQ will waste his time on those.

Anyone care to guess who it is?

Politically, my opinion on most things should be known by now, at least by the regulars. (shrugs) I'm more interested in the system of government right now than the individuals within it...who I see as mostly being the "Barbie" and "Ken"-types. I'm going more "big picture" these days, I guess....hanging back and observing more than anything.

The issue Davy has is that you don't give him an enemy to rail against and there is no way to justify his rage at all things Left...or center....or center Right...or anything not fringe Right-wing extreme. Imagine how frustrating that must be for lil Davy. You're cruel IQ, just cruel.

I think IQ's posts are the greatest. There are Zen priests who can't come up with material like that. Some of them might seem a little opaque at first but they repay reflection. I don't think David gets them. This is probably a good thing because if he got them he'd probably be even more confused and frustrated than he is now.

IQless is very kind in that he will occasionally try to phrase things in a way that you can understand. You know, reduce them to your level. Then you can turn around and explain them to David.
