I enjoyed reading this article from the BBC. Yea, it has a liberal slant to it, but if you can look beyond that, he's making a point that most of us should be able to appreciate. If a politician can fake sincerity well enough, they can convince voters to support them even though it goes directly against the voters own interests. I agree with that, and I think most politicians are sleazy enough to take a theory like that to heart and run with it.

What does that say about the American electorate? Many of them are just too damn lazy to check out what they have been told to the point that they vote against their own best interests. I also believe that it is in the interest of private industry if they can convince the population that government is bad because government is the only entity that can curtail abusive business practices. The mouth piece for private industry, a.k.a. the GOP, pushes this message relentlessly.

Now that made for a good read but dont expect too many comments Peter LOL

    I love this bit :D

"It's like a French Revolution in reverse in which the workers come pouring down the street screaming more power to the aristocracy."

Unfortunatly the same syndrome can be seen here at times as well so it is not wholey reserved for American voters

Our most recent presidential election is living proof that the electorate will fall for a good string of lies but I believe it also is a bit of a popularity contest...cult of personality thing...too. As many people fell for BO "cool persona" as fell for his endless lies.

Hey, why look that far back? A whole group of people believed what they heard on Fox News last night. Its not a matter of popularity or a cult-like following, its more a matter people not questioning what they are being told because it is what they want to hear in the first place.

As far as Barack Obama's popularity goes, I see that Republicans are terrified of his appeal especially to younger voters. Republicans are old and dying off and the ranks of the young Republicans are getting thin these days. I think Obama scares the hell out of the Republicans but not for any of the reasons that they will admit to in public. If Obama gets back into his populist message, the Republicans are toast and I think the smart ones know it.

I agree Republicans feared his popularity at one time but no longer. Too many promises have been broken, too many lies exposed.
As far as getting back to his populist message goes, isn't that the same thing as pandering? The same thing as being untruthful? Sounds to me as if you are saying (without saying it) BO used one message to get elected, then once elected he had an entirely different message? Now that he has found this BO isn't working he has to become a different BO?

Pandering is just the word the opposition uses to malign the other sides supporters. There is no such thing as pandering. If you're doing the work that the people who elected you want you to do, how can you be pandering?
All politicians since Walter Mondale have learned that telling the truth doesn't get you elected. If you're old enough to remember, he said "Mr. Reagan will raise your taxes; and so will I. He won't tell you. I just did." Mondale lost in a landslide because people prefer the lie. Then they complain that they were just lied to. Guess what? Reagan did raise taxes. So, if during the election candidates aren't completely honest, it is because they can't be and we don't want them to be. I've learned to read between the lines and I find those that complain about the lies we are told simply do it for political expediency.

So what does that say about BO whose only selling point was his guarantee of being a "new kind of politician" and bringing forth a "new kind of government"? Are you saying BO lied to win the presidency? Afterall, it wasn't his experience or track record of achievement that he ran on, was it?

I'm saying ALL politicians lie to be elected. Obama, the guys before him, and the guys after him, all have or will lie to get elected. If you decide to be naive and vote for the guy you think isn't going to lie, then you might as well stay home on election day. The public wants to be lied to. This isn't so hard to understand and I can only explain it in so many ways. Forgive my impatience, but I am busy today.

All politicians lie? No argument here.
I am merely trying to get people to understand the absurdity of a BO presidency. His lying has taken things to a whole other level!! 1 single, basic aspect is what BO ran on & got elected for- to be different. As everyone readily admits now, he is no different.

David can you name a single presidential candidate in living memory who has gone on tv/radio/newspapers whatever and said well folks I am going to do exactly what the last guy did, i'm not going to change a single thing?

  13. David

    David Proud Enemy of Hillary

No but I can name one who got elected by saying he wasn't going to do what the last guy did and based his entire campaign on it. I can name a presidential candidate who I saw right through (and told everyone so) but got me called paranoid, racist, etc.

I don't know about the racist part David, but I think the paranoid bit is obvious.

An interesting read no matter who you are.

    This part really got me.

"This is a culture war but it is not simply being driven by differences over abortion, or religion, or patriotism. And it is not simply Red states vs. Blue states any more. It is a war on the entire political culture, on the arrogance of politicians, on their slipperiness and lack of principle, on their endless deal making and compromises."

Can anyone tell me there is not a lot of truth in this statement and if so please explain.

David they all say they are going to do it different!! not just President Obama, ok he went a bit further but consider this what might he have been able to achieve if he had not walked into a economic melt down? I also have to ask why do you and others keep raising the racism question?? I have yet to see any one on this forum use that term against any one who disagrees with President Obama but I have seen it used many times by those opposed and it goes like this " If we disagree with him the left call us Racist" what utter rubbish
