    theres mention of capsicum in the beer records, though ill admit i
    dont know where it originates. certainly there were similar types in
    southeast asia, but im not really sure about africa and europe.

    Well, ripened /piper nigrum/ (i.e. red peppercorns, IIRC) as a beer
    flovoring in SE Asia is much more likely, since that was one of the primary
    sources, if not _the_ primary source. OTOH, I dunno how much barley they
    could have access to, in that time & place.

    As for capsicum (aka chile peppers), after discovery by Colombus (he set
    out in _search_ of pepper, why do you think he called them "peppers"?
    Marketing & Damage Control, of course!), the Portugese were most
    responsible for spreading chile peppers throughout Asia, Africa & Spain.

    Asia primarily for trading purposes, but Afica was along the way, so it
    made sense to spread a possibly valuable commodity there, as well - if it
    took, they'd have closer trading stops, as well.

    all i know is that there is much reference prior to the hops age of
    using pepper in beer. it was said to give a "warm glow" to the
    patrons who drank it. now, black pepper wouldnt be such a stretch, i
    imagine...

    sure they did.

    everyone brewed beer of some sort.

    although its still somewhat up in the air about whether beer, wine, or
    mead were first on the human fermentables calendar. the probability
    is beer or mead, which ferment far faster than wine, but who knows?
    were talking like 8000 BC or more back in history.

    Tah Olmecs, IIRC, made a mildly alcoholic, very thin, gruel from maize (aka
    field corn here in the States). I suppose you could cll that "beer", but I
    wouldn't.

    Chocolate, OTOH, was popular in that region, and was another thing imported
    from the "new world". As I recall it, chiles were used in flavoring that.
    It's not like they had sugar cane, or even honeybees for sweeteners, as

    anything made from predominantly grain i would call beer. hell, more
    than half the grain in budweiser is rice grains, not that id call it a
    fine beer. and id call corn kernels to be much more grain-like than
    anything else.

    Honey is relatively rare (until commercial hay-fields) and incurs
    some difficulty in the harvest, particulary for a people without
    ready (made from scratch) fire. Honey is also self-preserving, and
    will not ferment unless diluted and forced.
    Berries are likely first of that group, are more common than
