Today, Nate Silver (statistician) posted the following:

To get a safe victory, Biden must win the popular vote by around 5%.

Seems a bit absurd. What are the arguments for keeping the electoral college around instead of using the popular vote? Should we just abolish it?

I vote to abolish. However if you do that, then future presidents actions would be dictated by the major metropolitan centers. Still though, I am a proponent of a win by popular vote.

Forgive me for pointing this out, but I think you are asking a question to which you already know the answer.

Also, don't forget that, if the electoral college didn't determine the election result, Donald Trump likely would have employed a very different campaign strategy.

I don't, I know the traditional reasons, but feel they are antiquated. In it's current state a minority group is getting overrepresented in the presidency. At least in terms of it being far easier to get elected as a Republican than a Democrat.
