Allah will teach all those "uppity" Moslem women a lesson.

And if he won't, then his self-elected "representatives" will.

Musharraf should threaten WhoeverTF it is who really rules the "frontier"
regions to either cooperate with destroying the Taliban and al Qaeda there
or he'll allow the Americans (who are more than irritated with those
regions serving as sanctuaries for said assholes) in there from
    Afghanistan . . . .

Wouldn't cost him or the Pakistani Army (who would no doubt quite
cheerfully endorse the plan) anything, and it would be a more than
    credible threat.

And even more fun if he actually carried it out.

My thought has always been to give Musharraf four options.

    1) Go clean up that tribal area.
    2) Let us do it.
    3) We'll do it, together.

Rejection of those three options means harboring, which leads to option
    four.

    4) Pakistan goes *BOOM*.

Dealing with the tribal area has nothing to do with Pakistan not being a
modern democracy (the kink most of us would like it to be).

He's getting big bucks from China, now, too, apparently.

Note he didn't move against the "Red Mosque" and its kidnappings in the
capital itself of people for "trial" under "Islamic law"-- think of some
church near you starting to kidnap people and put them on "trial" under
the Old Testament-- until they kidnapped some Chinese . . . .

    > why work with him

    Well, there was Benazir Bhutto . . . .

And the other major opposition figure is head of the "Pakistan Muslim
League-N"-- I don't know what the "N" stands for, but I infer from the
"Muslim" that the PML-N or maybe (N) is not exactly a secularist party.

I don't know why it is that there doesn't seem to be anyone else in
Bhutto's party, the Pakistan People's Party, that is able to command
    attention.

Surely they've got a few ex-military-officers that know that if no one
else is going to do it, you gotta do it ("Oh, _no_") (I presume the
Pakistani Army teaches its officer cadets that, regardless of whatever
kind of political and/or incompetent and/or corrupt mess the Army actually
    is).

    > principles suck when they are neither black nor white

Americans get hardened to the "the least of evils" argument every Election
    Day . . . .

Well, actually, a lot of them stay home and get drunk.

    Apparently.

As for the choice between a relatively mild dictator and
something/anything like Saudi Arabia and their moral offspring the
    Taliban, that's no choice:

Work with the dictator to scrag the theocrats, and then lushly pension the
    dictator off.

Here's a neat glimpse of Life on the Afghani-Pakistani Frontier I just ran
across-- the English is a little shaky but the picture is still clear
    enough to be appalling:

"PARACHINAR: Two FC personnel among thirteen Taliban killed while twenty
two others sustained serious injuries in the ongoing shootout at different
places sources said on Wednesday. So far fifteen persons had been killed
with forty other injured in the interne sign among the warring groups in
the area. Till now thirteen Taliban are said to have been killed among
fifty one others and ninety five individuals have received serious wounds
in the battle. According to the details fierce fighting is continuing at
Sada, Khar Kalay, Balish Khel, Sangeena , Alizai, Tungi, Chardewaal,
Bagan, Makhezai, Mengak, Maqbal, Kanjalizai, Satikot, Terimangal and
Pevaar, heavy weapons including martor guns, missiles, Rocket Launchers
and Machine Guns are being used freely from both sides, while the
government is like a silent spectator over the bloody clashes. The sources
added that on Tuesday night hundreds of Taliban hailing from Waziristan
agency attacking at Alizai, Tungi, Chardewaal, Mengak areas where Turi
tribesmen are residing suffered heavy loss at the hands of the Turi
tribesmen while retaliating the charging Taliban on there respective areas."

    http://www.thefrontierpost.com/News.aspx?ncat=ts&nid=696

Sounds very much like the Taliban are attempting to conquer another tribal
area there, and things aren't going so well for them quite at this moment.

It also sounds, rather shockingly, like the Pakistani Army is refusing to
assist those tribesmen, at least with boots on the ground, although it
also sounds like those tribesmen are at least as loaded for bear as the
Taliban are, wot they have to be getting that stuff from somewhere.

Still, air-support would be nice. A lick or two of artillery. Those
little touches that can turn a fight.

Even though that means someone smert enough to be able to work out
coordinates on a map and use a radio has to get close enough to see . . . .

    Traditionally either a sergeant or a second lieutenant . . . .

Who has the most to gain by whacking this beehive? There seems to be
no shortage of arms - the guns, ammunition, rockets and grenades have
to come from somewhere (they make them out of imported yak poop?) so
whatever happens there's going to be a mess. The region has been only
    'slightly' managable since sometime prior to 500 BCE - pre-islam - it's
had empires wrapped around it but it has never been totally subdued.
Fortresses have been built, armies have invaded but the tribes still do
pretty much as they and survival decide. If you need a place to burn
resources and stir up trouble it's the best place on earth to do so.
Taliqaediranians did it (like who else anyhow?). They hang out there.

Or, the effort to educate, support and enfranchise indigenous peoples
could continue, perhaps stepped up a lot. Maybe if they had
representation in government proportionate to population they'd be less
prone to shooting their way into regional politics. Maybe if there was
a literacy rate better than 35% they'd have the means to communicate
their thoughts and learn the thoughts of others. Maybe if life wasn't
so harsh that death has become simple routine they'd behave in a more
civilized manner. Maybe if they had an economy based on something other
than moving arms and drugs they'd be more like the people we all like
to hang out with. The Taliban thrives on ignorance and fear. As long as
'civilized people' make life far more miserable than it has to be for
any corner of the world, there will be fertile ground for the
    'extremist'.

Your "poverty, ignorance and disease (PID)" theory is a popular one (used
to be used to explain communism's appeal in the "Third World", by people
who ignored the horrifying plutocracies of that "World" and the "Free
World's" complacent acceptance of those plutocracies), but doesn't explain
    (a) for example that the Numbah One and Two al Qaeda leaders are
respectively a civil engineer and a physician, (b) the Taliban's
consistent policy of attacking construction crews and aid workers in
Afghanistan and (c) the fact that some people respond to poverty,
    ignorance and disease constructively.

Certainly is convenient for Musharraf, doncha think? Didn't he put her under
house arrest when she first arrived in Pakistan?

And golly gee whiz, one of those naughty terrorists did it too. Of course,
Musharraf's hands are clean, aren't they?

Yes, because of security issues only. Not one attack on this country since

You have to nuke them - they have trillions of dollars and if we nuke
them we get to keep the money and fix up the world (we know exactly
where they keep it - we just have to figure out the PIN codes for the
