Congratulations on getting a real newsreader. Even if it's an older version
of Xnews. I recommend v06.02.16 and I'll send you the patch to make it all
pretty. This is the last version what inserts the cursor at the bottom of
the composition window, instead of the top (to encourage <snipping>, I'm
    guessing).

(you just need to get your sig happening, too)

    but this version is free.

may i ask you how i put a picture in and also does it have to be in
    black and white?

All versions of Xnews are free. And there is a very good random sig
generator out there, too. Forget the name of it, but I used to use
    it.

    > may i ask you how i put a picture in and also does it have to be in
    > black and white?

Yes, black and white only. A program called WinFace will generate them,
as well you can find some generators online, too. WinFace is very good.
Pick a picture and it will spit out a string of text. My default X-Face
    is this:

    *X-Face: "!"C[U#u:<4~?k,v8zqLTG-"`#=-5@]Grcl1^E1ehso&'2<65!CzZ7?L8)yP{{%?Q$oG_^v2B8a]|DQhpi}-oU.1ANZfIK$UzCh!H4"Lb+br>[H6"@O4Yt,'5Zb;*(.V,Tl+<t2Z8c8"AT@%)qm|,p]:ikLn-O#)#9.YF,(!{]0`YJ-S^\*)2;I^79{JUW`P?5R`sd;n:G\TF|q_{i{K^@e6FZ-;@DiUuU

The asterisk only means use it by default. In the main Xnews window selet
from the menu - Special->Setup->Compose tab->Custom Headers text box.
Paste that string in there and you should show an X-Face in your next post.
It ends up as a 48x48 bitmap.

I just discovered yesterday that PGP-- gpg, at least-- has photo-ID
associated with it, although for some reason the Debian/Ubuntu/Linux man
    page "strongly discourages" it . . . .

    Weirded me out.

Yep, I believe it started with PGP v6. 'Spose to enhance message signing, I
guess? No matter, I don't use it anymore.

That's one good thing about GUI readers-- they're fairly easy to dope out,
usually, even when you've got something like "old Pan" (<= 0.14.2.91)
here, that includes no documentation in its package or even on its website
    ("Adventures in Extreme Documentation").

It did take me a week to find out where the user/server Message-ID toggle
or switch was (on the "extra headers" tab in the message-composition
    window).

When a system is set up to accomplish some goal, a
new entity has come into being--the system itself.
No matter what the "goal" of the system, it
immediately begins to exhibit system behavior; that
is, to act according to the general laws that govern
the operation of all systems. Now the system itself
    has to be dealt with.

I tried Pan, but it didn't work for me. And pretty much every other reader
in existence. After using Xnews, they all gave me too much of an OE
feeling. <shudder> My second choice would be Dialog, only because it's
extremely customizable. I guess 40tude is done with it since they haven't
    updated since early '05.
