....This is getting boring. You don't want me to have to do it, do you? I will! Don't make me do it. :hammer:
That's an interesting and controversial topic. Thanks Steve! I suppose it depends what type of apology and to who. I think a government could apologize non-stop for most the decisions and policies they are responsible for over the course of their rule. If it would do some actual good or solve some current problem, why not. If it is just politizing some contemporary issue, why bother, every person ever enslaved is long dead.
It would help more if you gave back all the natural resources you stole Just kidding...I dont think an apology is important as much as understanding the effects it had and the very real problems it might have caused for the future generation that now have to play catch up...same with America or maybe even ESPECIALLY America who clung to slavery for much longer and clung to institutional discrimination for another century and a half Black people might have been technically free after the civil war but it wasn't really until the 60 that they really became equal and deep engrained prejudice doesn't just go away in 40 years...IMO of course. In time all wounds heal and those who cling to old hate die. Saw a black comedian the other day and he was talking about how the good ol days....how sometimes he will hear someone talk about the good ol days...he says "I'm Black...we didnt HAVE good ol days! Yeah...I miss the massa...having my own water fountains and eating establishments....those were the good ol days"
Should the Romans apologise for slavery or colonizing the known world? how about the Greeks, or possibly the Namibians?? or even the Gupta Empire for creating a empire? How about the terrible Toltecs and Aztecs bad people LOL I am sorry for possibly trivialising this a bit, but I am sure that you can see my point. The British Empire did not begin slavery so why should we apologise for it? We did though bring about the begining of the end of slavery so how about possibly a thank you for that. At the moment there is a group marching on London asking that the Goverment apologises for slavery, the Mayor of London is all for it Sorry for ranting a bit but this realy gets on my goat LOL De Orc
I believe that the Irish Government should be held accountable for supporting acts of anti-Protestant genocide & Britanniphobic terrorism in both Ireland & across the border in Ulster. I can perfectly understand why the Dublin & Monaghan bombings took place back in 1974.Perhaps Gerry Adams & Martin McGuinness should have been shot, strung up,or blown up years ago! Sinn Fein/I.R.A. have NEVER been a democratically-minded organisation. The same thing applies to Z.A.N.U.-P.F. over in Zimbabwe. Aidan.
I think time frame is everything...ancient as opposed to modern...But I dont think modern countries owe apologies for slavery as much as people who have continued racism and discrimination...for instance in the US...after slaves are freed they still live in fear, not as equals, virtual slaves, treated like animals until they almost had to tear apart the nation to get a semblance of equal rights. This is more telling to me that although we no longer owned slaves...well into the 1950-60 (and in some cases many even today) still hate blacks and people of color. I am not talking about the hood wearing clan but the real dangerous ones...the smiling casual racists CEO that hide it but hold positions of power over people and say 'I aint racist' all the while telling Nigger jokes to his buddies on the weekend. Oh and Aiden...what about the expropriations of Catholics by Oliver Cromwell, and the deportation of tenants, land confiscations....the anti catholic crusades Ireland that ruined so many lives....let me guess...the evil papal scum deserved worse...
I quite agree with you on that Drusus the time frame does mean a lot and as for Aidans remarks about the Southern Irish desrving been bombed I doubt that he has ever seen the aftermath of a bomb or he woudnt be talking such drivel. De Orc :thumb:
Steve & Moen,I've met quite a few Irish Papists over here.A majority of them were both extremely dumb & extremely bigoted.Ireland should NEVER have been granted independence.Ulster was destined to secede from Ireland anyway,as they're culturally & ethnically distinct from what is now the Romish rebel pirate state. Aidan.
It would be a whole lot faster if all governments automatically apologized for just about anything requested. They could turn it into a form letter and diffuse the issues instead of allowing them to fester. "The government of ________ hereby and forever apologizes to the decendents of all affected persons for the actions of our ancestors regarding the issue of __________. Their actions at the time were wrong and rest assured won't be tolerated by any current or future administration. [signed] Minister of Apologies"
Steve, don't forget that Pope Bentdick of Rome is the biggest bigot & hypocrite on the face of this planet,as well as being the pointed hatted faggot Nazi gorilla in Rome. I would rather have the Archbishop of Canterbury as the head of the Church under the Queen.I had the honour of meeting George Carey when he came over here back in 1997. Aidan.
Sorry Aidan but what are you talking about? I dont remember the Pope as having anything to do with this conversation! Your comments are Bigoted & Dumb, you have absolutly no idea of what you are talking about, I honestly doubt if you have ever met a Irish person in your life LOL. De Orc :kewl:
The best airport in the world and a great stop over if going to the middle east or russia was in my time the Dublin Airport. Great showers, clean towels-great stout. Got hand it to the Irish for their poems and their spirits. Plus the clean shower/clean towel thing.
