Oh right, you "know" Obama's master plan. I forgot. As far as no viable alternatives to fossil fuels, there are electric cars from almost every major car manufacturer, wind and solar alternatives for generating electricity, there is natural gas, nuclear energy, and thermal energy sources, and any number of other sources that could easily replace our dependence on the middle east fossil fuels if we would stop artificially propping up the oil industry. So to say that there are no alternatives is just plain naive.
You know as well as I do what BO said about gas prices. And as far as the alternatives, I said "viable" alternatives. Sure there are electric cars but at $30 grand a pop how many middle class families can afford that right now? How many cars are equipped to run on wind, solar or thermal energy sources?
All of them! At least the cars that are electric. All three of those sources of power can generate electricity. We already have buses that run on natural gas. Face it, the only thing keeping us hooked on dirty oil is the monopoly the oil companies have and all the subsidies they enjoy for no apparent reason. Many countries have invested in other types of energy and are today much further along than we are in implementing alternatives. We could easily catch up if we stopped letting the oil companies run the show.
You are so ignorant of the facts it isn't even funny. Name one car that can carry a family 200 miles on a single charge. And just how is that the oil companies fault?
The President, Democrat or Republican, can do very very little to affect the price of gasoline. If I had to quantify that influence as a percentage it would at best be a percent or two... tops... at worst it would be a tenth of one percent, or lower. IMO, any action any President takes, from allowing more drilling to securing deals for oil from other countries affects politics far more than the product (gasoline). So, with $5/gal gasoline I'd say the President, any President, is accountable for at most 10 cents and as little as less than a tenth of a cent. Averaged out I'm calling it 2 cents. Hey! That's my 2 cents!
In the short term, you are close, but I will bet you could not back up a single figure you have there. However, during the previous oil crises, we were told that it would not help for 10 years if we drilled more. Well, guess what! It has been over 10 years. We did not drill so it did not help.
I notice you conveniently ignored the issue of the price tag on these vehicles. How viable is an electric car with it's $30k price tag for the family that has touble paying $5.00 for gas?
Don't forget what brought the gas prices down a few years ago "drill baby, drill". As soon as the oil producers began to fear real competition they backed off the prices.
I haven't, and I included that in my estimate. It should be noted that I used long-term calculations rather than short-term. My question is: As a percentage, how much is any President directly responsible for the price of gasoline. ...and is open to anyone.
Well, I guess if calling people names makes you feel superior somehow, you go girl. But I accept your challenge. Let's look at the Chevy Volt for example: Volt is unique among electric vehicles because you have two sources of energy. You have an electric source–a battery–that allows you to drive gas–free for an EPA–estimated 35 miles. And there's also an onboard gas generator that produces electricity so you can go up to a total of 375 additional miles on a full tank of gas. BTW That is one charge. You didn't say exclusively on one charge. The Nissan Leaf gets 100 miles on a full charge. Since the average commute is only 40 miles each way, 200 miles on a single charge is just a number you pulled out of your and is pretty meaningless. These new cars are getting better and better and like power tools, computers, cell phones, and everything else that start out expensive the price comes down over time. The oil companies are just delaying the implementation of the new technology. I don't expect someone that is so old that they fart dust to understand technological innovation but the rest of us certainly do.
Well, Bush for example had a vested interest in high oil prices because he had so many connections to the oil industry. I don't know if presidents can directly impact the lowering of gas prices with any policies other than conservation. It has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the less oil we use, the lower the price goes. Promoting conservation is the only viable way to actually affect the price of oil downward. Now, if you wish to increase the price of oil as president, there are several things you can do. You can destabilize the Middle East. You can limit refinery licenses. You can suppress other energy types thereby increasing the demand for and decreasing the supply of oil and any number of other things that will raise the price of oil so your buddies can make even more money.
It pays for itself. Your lack of a gas payment easily pays the lions share of the additional cost of the more expensive car. Think about it, think about,.......
So the Nissan Leaf gets 100 miles on a full charge? Is that carrying a family? BTW, that would just enable me to go from one side of the city to the other. That is why they work so well for the Soros's of the world. If they are not going any distance, they show off their Volt (while we pay $250,000 for GM to make it). But if they have to travel, they take their Bentley
You are as out of touch as BO. How many struggling families can go out & plop down $30k for an electric car? Really. HM or iqless, honestly, do you suck it up & struggle with the $5/gal or do you waltz down to the dealership & shell out $30k for one of moen & BO's viable alternatives to fossil fuels?
What do I think of $5/gallon gasoline? Well, I try not to for starters but when I do I don't like it. Seriously. Does anyone like it except maybe the speculators and the big oil companies? Now I know there are some people here that really hate our President and lash out at him at any opportunity and for any reason. However, if you think President Obama (or any other President) is that stupid you're fooling yourselves. Considering there is an election coming up in November it would seem fair to assume that ONE thing the President does NOT want is spiraling gas prices. After all it's in the news everyday and all one has to do is drive a gasoline powered vehicle to realize that it's a reality. I don't want to see $5 gas prices. I sure as hell don't remember $1.84 either. I've seen it go up and I've seen it go down. Not long ago I saw it as low as $2.15. I don't recall anyone saying what a great job the President was doing in relation to this. I can remember gas hitting $4 a gallon under President Bush. I'll admit I complained about it and questioned what he could do. In hindsight probably no more than President Obama and President Bush had closer ties to the industry. It is what it is folks. It sucks. Luckily I don't drive too much anymore but plan to top off the tank tomorrow at $3.79. I'll fill up again in a month or so. Might pay $4.50 or maybe $3. Time will tell.
So your argument is that if not everyone can afford to buy one today, we shouldn't bother with alternative fuel cars? That's what I'm hearing you say. BTW on many of these hybrids, the government and state will give you a tax credit of several thousand dollars. With the raise I just got, I could buy two of these things and yes, I am bragging just to piss you off.
According to the RNC talking points for Fox News and other RW talking heads, they are supposed to talk only about gas prices, the national debt, and unemployment. Do you think our RW friends here got the memo? Sure they did. Fox Economic Coverage Mimics GOP Strategy Memo Steve Doocy is offering further evidence that Fox News acts as the communications arm of the Republican Party. This morning the Fox & Friends host read directly from a "pundit prep" document provided to him by the Republican National Committee: "They said the three best ways to define the Barack Obama economy: the national debt, (which is skyrocketing), the unemployment (which is north of 8 percent), and gas prices". Either Fox News has been diligently following this memos for months, or the network and the GOP have simply been on the same page. Throughout the past year, Fox has repeatedly ignored expert economists and hijacked debate about job creation in favor of an obsession with near term deficit reduction. In doing so, they helped manufacture a default crisis and cheered the resulting credit downgrade. Furthermore, they falsely claimed that President Obama has not laid out a plan for reducing the national debt over the long term. As for the network's discussion of unemployment, they haven't let facts get in the way of getting out the Republican Party's message. As jobs numbers have improved, Fox has rushed to falsely discredit government data as "phony" and "fabricated". In line with the RNC directive, they have gone into overdrive in hyping high gas prices and assigning the blame to the president. Of course, none of this is at all surprising for a network whose programming is at times almost identical to RNC campaign ads and has a history of passing off Republican research as its own, typos and all.
Ha ha ha! Same old, same old eh? Think about this for moment. The more peolpe that buy fuel efficient cars and electric cars the less fuel we use overall. The less fuel we use the cheaper it becomes for everyone. Supply and demand. I don't pretend to know other people's financial situations or their tax status but I do know that some of these tax credits are pretty good from both the state and the federal government. Again, although you don't seem to be able to take in new information, I have nothing to do with either co-eds or student loans. I do see the option of student loans as an investment in a person's financial future. Tell me, do the widgets you sell do anything for a person's future earning potential or does selling them just line your pockets? Ask yourself if what you do has any real meaning in people's lives. I know that I can say what I do does to the tune of over a million dollars on average over the course of their lives. Do your widgets do that?
