I'm fine so far, although ringed by fires. Smoke and ashes in the sky and
the moon is orange. My daughter in Twentynine Palms is all set to come and
get me, although she may experience difficulties getting here since there
are some freeway closures. At any rate, repeating the Day fire experience,
I'm packed and ready to go at a moment's notice. If it came to an
evacuation, it will really be hard to lock the door and leave. There have
been so many homes burned. As usual, the Ventura County Fairground is opened
to shelter large animals, and several Humane Society locations have offered
to take in small animals. If I have to run for it, teh puppeis are coming
    with me.

    Sorry about your bug, Shirley.

That must be the west coast complement to what happens in New Jersey and
New York. There the sky turns orange-brown and the ground has a bluish
cast. The important people blamed it on the cars but it seemed to be
worse on hot days with little traffic - I suspect the huge gas turbine
generators and coal-fired plants used to deliver the extra kick for all
the air conditioners in use on weekends at home were the real culprits.

I figured you'd bugged already. Air-quality sucks, from all reports.

I like the Ventura County Sheriff's Department's "fire" page. Very snappy.

Have they tied the fire-warning system into those funky little emergency
radios (you know, like are used to keep a wary ear out for weather "events")?

I dunno. I usually just keep the tv tuned to the local channel; they have
    all the latest updates.

Yes; lower temps and a wee bitty bit of rain has helped the firefighters to
get a handle on things. Sky clear, no more ashes and smoke here. Car
    unpacked.

HOWSOME-EVER, surviving wildlife has come down outa the hills and is making
life interesting for all in this area.

    It's always something, aint it?

I keep them, mostly-- generally speaking, if a book's worth reading, it's
    worth re-reading.

When I had my housefire six years ago, I lost a library of quite literally
thousands of books, acquired (and culled every few years) over three
    decades.

    Kind of depressing.

OTOH, a couple thousand dollars of insurance money went to a hard fast
reboot of "the serious shelf" (math and science) as well as several
favorite-author collections, eg Thomas Pynchon, Jack Vance, Barry
Malzberg, Ron Goulart, Keith Laumer, etc., and a generous quick scattering
of other faves (and a few long-wanteds, just for the luxury of it, like
    Gardner's _Gilgamesh_ . . . ), and some historical favorites (my preferred
recreational reading is comedy and history-- I love, for example, the
various sets of "Nixon transcripts" kicking around-- hair-raising yet
    hilarious).

    Still workin' on it, though.

And, eg, the price of a replacement copy of "Suvorov's" _Icebreaker_
climbed over a hundred bucks several years ago-- used!-- so I've settled
for a nice cheap Russian edition of that-- _Ledokol_-- until someone has
the guts to reissue the English translation.

You are the second person I knew that has lost a serious book collection. A
friend of mine lost his when Katrina hit. He said the same as you...some he
will never be able to replace. He had some first editions that were signed.

I don't think I could stay awake long enough to read the Nixon transcripts.
