When I had my housefire six years ago, I lost a library of quite literally thousands of books, acquired (and culled every few years) over three decades. Kind of depressing. OTOH, a couple thousand dollars of insurance money went to a hard fast reboot of "the serious shelf" (math and science) as well as several favorite-author collections, eg Thomas Pynchon, Jack Vance, Barry Malzberg, Ron Goulart, Keith Laumer, etc., and a generous quick scattering of other faves (and a few long-wanteds, just for the luxury of it, like Gardner's _Gilgamesh_ . . . ), and some historical favorites (my preferred recreational reading is comedy and history-- I love, for example, the various sets of "Nixon transcripts" kicking around-- hair-raising yet hilarious). Still workin' on it, though. You are the second person I knew that has lost a serious book collection. A friend of mine lost his when Katrina hit. He said the same as you...some he will never be able to replace.
