From a military point of view. The best way to destroy the thugs running Iran, is to deprive them of money. Iran GNP is 99% oil revenues. Thus, I would land marines on Kharg, take it over, esp. all the oil reserves. Then have the naval forces, seize all ships carrying Iranian oil. Then we would have the population desperate to openly rebel and overthrow the mullahs. Maybe also persuade Turkey to invade from NE.
I disagree with taking control of Iranian oil. That is the only asset the Iranian People have which gives them hope of successfully replacing the doomed hard line dictatorship with a thriving elected government. Promises of temporary American control and return of that control to Iran are likely to be viewed as hollow by some, and rob Iran of the energy and enthusiasm they need to deliver themselves from oppression. The right way for us to do this is to take out the oppressors and further discourage those who think they might be next in line.
But, the problem has been, is presently, that bloody bunch in power (Islamist) are selling the oil to the Chinese, they then take the money and spend it on themselves, missiles, their nuclear ambitions, proxy terror org. like the Houthis, Hezbollah.... The millions of protesters that took to the streets in Dec./ Jan before brutal crackdown was economic. The Rial had dropped 80% in value, people were unable to eat, businesses were going bankrupt. The Regime instead, just like Putin in Russia, spent all their oil revenues on their evil ambitions, military, and security forces. I mean, they learned well from their closest ally in the Kremlin. Today, teachers have not been paid in last three months, internet is out in Moscow, infrastructure in 90% of Russia is falling apart. But Putin owns 5 palatial properties, oil refineries do not have air defences, most protect Putins assets. Dictators live in a different world, and we can be glad we live in democratic nations, ruled by freely elected leaders. The people in Iran, N> Korea, China and Russia have no idea, since they are "brainwashed" to believe the BS their govt. controlled media tells them.
Hijack the ships when they clear the gulf, ala Venezuelan ships. China has those contracts. Sell it to our allies instead

Well, Iran just told Trump to stuff it. So hopefully a land invasion to seize Kharg and all the Islands, then the coastline. Meantime, Trump should organize others to pitch in a ground war. Only way this will end is totally destroy all members, troops of IRGC/ Police/ Security Apparatus. Then Iranians can put in place a new democratic govt.
