Iraq attack leaves 5 GIs dead; 3 missing
    1 hour, 10 minutes ago
BAGHDAD - Seven U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi army interpreter came under attack Saturday morning during a patrol of a Sunni insurgent stronghold south of Baghdad, leaving five dead and three missing, the military said.

Troops were searching for the three missing, using drone planes, jets and checkpoints throughout the area, according to the statement. Soldiers were also asking local leaders for information.

After the pre-dawn attack near Mahmoudiya, a Sunni stronghold about 20 miles south of Baghdad, nearby units heard explosions and a drone plane later observed two burning vehicles, the statement said.

This year is definitely uglier than the last. Ever since they started shooting down our choppers in February, (one of them was ours), they've been getting more and more brazen. Wearing ACU uniforms to storm small bases, kidnapping a u.s. soldier who went to visit his Iraqi wife, sniping, and now this.

WOW, I'm surprised you're able to post at all with what just happened. If I'm not mistaken your avatar says your in the US Army Communications field. Do you guys still use SIPRNet and NIPRnet. I was with the USAF Communications side of the house.

I just had a good friend return from Iraq and he wasn't allowed to send e-mail at all when we lost a troop (killed, injured) or had one go missing.

Yep, I'm in the Signal Corps. We provide SIPR/NIPR through a JNN satellite uplink. When our chopper went down, we were in blackout for a day and a half so that family members could be notified before the news leaked with their identities. We had to unplug our NIPR links so that people couldn't call or e-mail out. One of our companies lost both their CO and 1SG because they were piloting, and the news went around pretty quickly.

In this case, I'm too far away to know what units/personnel are involved. But I'm sure the FOBs around Mahmudiyah are on black out.

Heheh...nice to see you know your beers! You must've been stationed at Clark. :thumb:

I appreciate the offer, but I already feel like a cop-out. I just came back from my mid-tour R&R, and I flew in through Dallas. Our plane pulled in under a water-cannon arch from crash & rescue, the whole airport clapped and cheered, and nobody would let me pay for anything. The guys that deserve the "hero treatment" are the combat arms guys that have to go outside the wire everyday to kick in doors. I'm just a computer nerd that was lucky enough to be stationed on a cushy air force base. My first deployment was an Army FOB, and I still remember eating MRE's everyday and having our tents fall over during sandstorms. I can't believe this place has a movie theater and Popeye's chicken. You air force guys sure know how live, I'll give you that!

At any rate, imported San Miguel tastes like crap, it's only good fresh in-country. :D

It was a LONG Time ago (1983) when I was TDY at Clark/Subic Bay for training, "Team Spirit Exercise" I think... I'm very happy you were able to experience in Dallas what some here say doesn't happen at all...
