    On the contrary....

Republicans Are Disappearing In California (And Maybe From The Face Of The Earth)
September 14, 2015 Deborah Montesano Politics

They haven’t quite gone the way of the dinosaur — yet — but Republicans are disappearing in California. The trends in the state presage what the rest of the nation can expect, or is already experiencing.

REPUBLICANS ARE DISAPPEARING DUE TO HOSTILE POLITICS
The party has been warned many times that it needs to become more inclusive if it’s to remain viable. But the policies they are pursuing are exactly the ones that are alienating new voters: opposition to gay rights and same-sex marriage; anti-immigration stances; depriving women of workplace protections, contraception, and abortions; opposition to raising the minimum wage.

It isn’t just minority voters who are put off by these attitudes, often described as small-minded, mean-spirited, and outright hostile. But the base of white voters to which Republicans appeal is quickly shrinking in the wake of their inhumane postures.

Nowhere is the picture as stark as in California, where a Republican presence is becoming virtually non-existent. Added to the previously mentioned problems, Californians are more likely than those in other states to look askance at the current fundamentalist bent of the GOP.

The situation for California’s Republicans took a turn for the worse in 1994 when Proposition 187 was passed with the strong support of the Republican governor, Pete Wilson. Prop 187 denied state services to undocumented immigrants, affecting huge numbers of Latino families that were a mix of documented and undocumented members. Latinos left the party in droves. Soon after, the GOP started losing elections for statewide office.

The numbers have only gotten worse for the GOP over time. According to the Los Angeles Times, 61 percent of California’s voters in the 2010 election were white. In the election two years later, that number was down to 55 percent. But the number of Republicans among those white voters is dismal. Only a third of white voters — the people the GOP considers its base — are registered Republicans. A third are registered Democrats. However, the 20% that are registered as independents tend to lean Democratic.

A look at the numbers among minority voters shows how deep a hole California Republicans have dug for themselves. To repeat, over 40 percent of registered voters in the state are members of minority groups. Of that number, 17 percent are registered Republicans, 52 percent are Democrats, 27 percent independents (who, again, tend to lean Democratic). If Republicans aren’t asking themselves if they’ll ever win another statewide election, they should be.

‘IDENTITY POLITICS FOR WHITE PEOPLE’ HAS LITTLE APPEAL
The national picture is looking almost as grim. First of all, the GOP under Donald Trump’s “guidance” has become so extreme on issues like immigration that anyone who is remotely accepting of immigration reform has little choice but to run far from the Republican Party. Trump is appealing to the fringes while everyone else jumps ship.

Ben Domenech, publisher of the conservative The Federalist, says the Republican Party is faced with a choice and it’s in danger of making the wrong one (for others of us, it already have). Demonech recently wrote:

“Ultimately, Trump presents a choice for the Republican Party about which path to follow: a path toward a coalition that is broad, classically liberal, and consistent with the party’s history, or a path toward a coalition that is reduced to the narrow interests of identity politics for white people.”

“…the Trump moment very much illuminates its function as one interest group among many, as opposed to the background context for everything the nation does.”

So who comprises that one interest group? White people, obviously, but a very narrow proportion of white people. The Pew Research Center published an analysis last spring of the long-term trends within the political parties. Here are the only groups where a majority identify as, or lean toward, Republican — Mormons; white, evangelical Protestants; white Southerners; white males who have not completed a college education.

More whites are Republican (49 percent) than Democratic (40 percent), but not a majority. More of the Silent Generation, ages 69-86, are Republican (47 percent) than Democratic (43 percent), but not a majority.

The groups where a majority identify as, or lean toward, Democrats are — blacks; Asians; the religiously unaffiliated; post-graduate women; Jews; Hispanics; millennials (ages 18-33).

The problem for the GOP is clear. Nationally, the Republican base is stagnant or shrinking, comprised of the ultra-right religious fringe, under-educated men, and the elderly. The Democratic base is young and diverse, comprised of majorities of the largest minority groups and educated women, as well as a significant proportion of whites.

Republicans just aren’t what they used to be, so it’s no wonder their numbers are dwindling. In California, they are on the verge of extinction. In the rest of the nation, they are becoming something else entirely — the party of Trump. Would anyone shed a tear if they, too, lumbered off into oblivion?

.....and dimocrats are running away from Hillary in droves! Heck, the guy they're running to isn't even a dimocrat! Other than ol' Hill, every other dim candidate is an old, rich, white, male, career politician. Nice prospects, huh?

It's merely wishful thinking. As more people enter the race in the Democrat primary, support among ALL candidates vacillates due to the greater number of choices. Once it comes down to either Clinton, Sanders, or even Biden, or whoever, the support will consolidate behind that individual. It always does.

However, Trump will not find this to be true. Most of the GOP can't stand him. No Democrats will support Trump and huge numbers of Independents already have an unfavorable view of Trump from the start. God let the Repukes nominate Trump, please oh please oh please.....

    Hillary isn't a "dimocrat" either David. She's a Democrat.

I know you amuse yourself to no end when you use such a clever term and you think it annoys adults.

Well, it does. Annoying name calling children always have.

Children in general amuse me at times because they can be so naive. I find it amazing that someone like yourself has to stoop to constant name calling.

I call this pathetic and that's a real word. Not calling you a name. Just pointing it out.

    ODS is now HDS.

Congratulations! You have just described what Republicans tend to vote for. Good job.

Dim might actually work here. It's the mentality of those voters.

Your listening requires great patience especially if it's just what you overhear.

There is a great wealth of information to be garnered from just listening. It also gives one the reality of the amount of misinformation that is laid out as information that abounds.

Are you listening LucyRay? I'm sure you are.;)

When I'm unfairly treated like a victim, you bet I do. But, I wouldn't say I'm as much a "victim" as a "target" in this instance. I do as much name calling as anyone on this forum, including you. But, to imply that only one side seems to be the perpetrator is nothing more than hypocrisy at its worst.

I'll continue to use derogatory names (i.e., "Hilderbeast", "Skanky Old Hag", "Lying Piece of Shit", etc.) simply because they are the best description I'm conveying at any particular time.
