Today is Remembrance Day, Armistice Day in France, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month a 2 minuets silence is observed Here in Europe we remember those who fell in two world wars and other conflicts in the name of democracy and freedom, I would ask that you all spare a moments thought for those who have sacrificed so much for us. Please Do Not Forget Them http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7718854.stm http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A653924 http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/11/07/f-remembrance-day.html http://www.connexionfrance.com/news_articles.php?id=477 In the UK it is customery to wear a Poppy in remembrence of this terrible event and we have a American Lady to thank for that Moira Michael from Georgia, was the first person to wear a poppy in remembrance. In reply to McCrae's poem, she wrote a poem entitled 'We shall keep the faith' which includes the lines: And now the Torch and Poppy Red We wear in honor of our dead. In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. John McCrae (1872 - 1918)
Yep, Veterans Day here but I still remember my Grandparents calling it Armistice Day when I was a kid even though it had probably been renamed 20 years earlier. I had no idea what Armistice meant back then and I knew it as Veterans Day. lol They were adults when it was first created so I guess the old name stuck with them. lol
