There's a geological theory going around that New Madrid has "cooled off"
for a few centuries or so (there's a sort of "roving hot-spot" element in
the theory, vis-a-vis internal tectonic plate activity).

Of course, this could just be a plot by the authorities to keep the
populace from panicking as we get closer to the centennial of the last Big
    One.

I plan on going for some extra Band-Aids some time in 2011.

Down here, only ten miles from the epicenter, it *sucked*!

was over before it hardly started.

We used to get better than that once a year, until the '89 one
fucked it up by blowing off all the built-up stress.

The only good part was listening to hundreds of voices
going in Punjabi and Sinhalese and Hindi and I-don't-

Yeah, that will be one hell of a show. If possible, I will just move
on up to the farm in Oregon afterwards. 500 miles is a ways to walk,
but I figure make it to Sacramento and there will be transport.

No, they did. The City of Sunnyvale, California, is now
approximately 91% Indian, I not you kid.

I've lived here since 1963 and consider myself something

Anyway, Indians in the U.S. think they know everything better
    than anybody else.

    SacraMENTO?

Sacramento in normal times is on the brink of anarchy.
If there's ever a serious earthquake, those fuckerz'll start with
cannibalism and work their way toward the more serious
    Crimes Against Humanity.

Sacramento is, more or less, a Crime Against Humanity.
In the event of a breakdown of the civil order, I'd sooner
    head for Detroit.

My favorite was 1989, the Big One (soon to lose that distinction, I
    hope...)

I took a day off work, so I was home when my son came back from school
in tears. He had lost his brand-new retainers, which had cost a
fortune (and I simply didn't have the money to replace them). We
tried to figure out where they could have gone, and eventually worked
it out that, because he took them off to eat, he must have
accidentally wrapped them up with his lunch debris and tossed them.

We went to the school and found a janitor who told us all the garbage
had been put into a big dumpster already. I climbed up and started
trying to poke around with a stick. I soon realized it was hopeless
and said, "Screw it, there's only one way". So I climbed in and start
looking for what I only knew was a brown bag with a banana peel and a
plastic bag with a bit of peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

After about 20 minutes I found it, pretty near the top! My son was
practically hyperventilating with joy, so I felt pretty good about the
    whole thing.

We walked home. My son and his friend went inside and unlocked the
garage door for me so I could take off and bag up all my clothes and
    shower.

As I was showering, I thought to myself that nothing else could happen
that day which could hold a candle to the low and high I'd just
    experienced.

I walked into the kitchen, noticed the time, and said, "Hey, the
game's starting" (third game of the A's-Giants World Series). As I
was reaching for the TV on switch, the shaking began. We went to
stand in the doorway, just as a car drove down the street. The driver
slowed to a stop, got out and started looking under his car to see
what was making it shimmy and wobble. Then he looked over at me, and
I just pointed up toward a drunkenly swaying telephone pole. I'll
never forget the look on the guy's face.

And people think earthquakes aren't cool? Hell, the next day was
almost as good (but that's another story...)

Was it something he did, or were they just tearing it down to
make room for a dot-com-millionaire condo compex (now
converted to a Mumbai West condo complex)?

    Never lived there.

However, due to an unfortunate hunting accident in their city hall, I
