I don't smoke and it doesn't bother me. My dad smoked all his adult years and I guess I grew up with it, so...

"Public areas" could mean a lot of things. it could mean in restaurants, in bars, in buildings, train stations, airports, parks, other outdoor spaces, etc. What/where exactly are you talking about?

I smoke, however I generally wouldn't smoke inside places just out of courtesy of others, however I find it disturbing when they try to regulate and/or make illegal and/or fine people for things that aren't illegal to do.

At least we all can't talk in the library shhhhhhh, or part in haddicapped spots even if there's 20 of those available and none for able-bodied people.

20 years, smoking will be banned in all 'public areas' in the U.S. What's it up to now, 5 states?

    Ditto.

Smoking should be banned in restaurants and public trnasportation, especially airplanes. I think most people are allergic to cigarette smoke to one degree or another. Smoke ruins good food and drink.

However, believe it or not, some fine wines have a "tobacco" component in the aroma. It's natural and considered positive. I made a very nice Petite Syrah in 2003 that when you were done, the glass smelled like a cigarette butt. Wierd.

You want to smoke, fine. You can't quit, I understand, best friends been a smoker since he was 12. Nicotine is an insideously evil drug that doesn't let go once it gets is claws into your head. Just don't force me to have to even smell the 2nd hand smoke wafting off the damn cancer sticks. Kind of hard to do in an enclosed space.

P.S My venom on this subject was honed during a 10 hour international flight in the days just prior to the blanket ban on all smoking during flights. Some brain dead Delta policy maker figured that it was OK to make half an 8 row cabin non-smoking and the other half smoking. Can anyone else with more than a 6th grade education figure out why that would cause a non-smoker to turn green and toss?

Ummm...yah...ban smoking from all public spaces.

i am a ex smoker and have to say I use to and still do hate people smoking whilst I am eating, one good thing about smoking on planes (and this might sound odd but it is true) they circulate the air more often than on non smoking flights therby less chance of headaches and colds :thumb:

Chicago is currently debating whether or nor to ban smoking in cook county. All bars, restaurants, cabs, hotels, you name it. I've never been a smoke but as I've mentioned before, my mom just died of lung cancer after smoking for 55 years. She tried everything from hypnosis to the patch and the only thing that finally caused her to quit was death. Even then, I think that we buried her with a pack or two.
Point is that these people are physically addicted to a legal product that has serious health consequences for themselves and others. The tobacco industry is the moral equivalent of Satan on earth and the government doesn't seem to care that they are in bed with an organization that is pedaling a deadly product to its citizens.
So who should we really be angry with, the people addicted to the deadly substance or the pushers of this drug? It's no different that letting a cocaine dealer pedal his wares in the open market and taxing his product and then punishing the addicted users for behavior we don't like. The only difference is that cigarettes are more addictive than cocaine.

Prohibition was already tried and it failed. I can't imagine people growing their own tobacco and keeping their addiction alive while they wait for the plants to grow and then dry the leaves and roll the cigarettes. Hey, if they are willing to go through all of that, they deserve to smoke. Just don't ask the rest of us to pick up their health care bill.

Are you thinking of the same plant as I am? Isn't there a lot of money being spent to help those who can't seem to kick the monkey off their back? So why do we pay for one form of insanity and not the other?

As Moen stated, prohibition isn't the answer. But lawsuits and insane taxes seem to be taking a decent bite. Tighten the screws I say. Earmark any additonal tax gains solely for the purpose of covering the medical bills of those infected by 2nd hand smoke.
