    The most recent Pratchetts I have (and treasure both) are _Thief of Time_
    and _The Truth_.

    Have any of the Discworld novels since then been of that quality?

    (The first chapter of _Night Watch_ was appended to the end of one-a
    those, and frankly I found it so heavy-handed that it turned me _against_
    checking the book out . . . .)

    Night Watch is ok, but you have to stick with it. Pratchett draws from many
    sources and NW nods to (among other things) Les Mis and John Peel, and the
    founding of Scotland Yard.

    If you want to know how Sam Vimes rose from Watch captain to a Dukedom, read
    Guards! Guards! You might also want to check out Thud and Monstrous
    Regiment. I bought his latest one (Making Money) and it just doesn't come up
    to most of his work. Lacks something.

    <mildly>

    _Guards! Guards!_ is the first Ankh-Morpork/ Night-/ City-Watch novel.

    I of course have long had it.

    What about _Thud_ and _Monstrous Regiment_?

    Fear is strange soil. Mostly it grows obedience like corn, which
    grows in rows and makes weeding easy. But sometimes it grows the
    potatoes of defiance, which flourish underground.

    Well worth the money. Buy them. Thud takes Vimes and family to Uberwald
    where he meets the Low King and Sergeant Angua's relatives.

    Monstrous Regiment is the story of a truly unusual batch of recruits from
    Borogravia during the last messy bits of a war, and how they and Vimes
    settle everything.

    Some of Pratchett's best.

    Hm? he'd already run head-on into all of the above in _The Fifth
    Elephant_.

    I still think Sergeant Delphine Angua von Uberwald would best be played in
    a movie by Emmanuelle Seigner:

    Oops, sorry. Thud takes Vimes and family to the scene of the Koom Valley
    Massacre or Ambush, depending on whether you are a dwarf or a troll. By
    family I mean Vimes, Sybill and young Sam. And members of the Night Watch of
    course.

    <snort>

    Yeah, Pratchett has each side traditionally accusing the other of
    ambushing _it_, implying it was a classic "encounter battle" where both
    sides lost.

    A Koom Valley venue does indeed sound much more intriguing.
