God certainly knows that this country has the most ideological Christians on the planet.

Pope Francis describes ‘ideological Christians’ as a ‘serious illness’ within the Church

    Pope Francis

Speaking at daily Mass last Thursday, Pope Francis warned Christians against turning their faith into a rigid ideology.
“The faith passes, so to speak, through a distiller and becomes ideology,” he said, according to Radio Vatican. “And ideology does not beckon [people]. In ideologies there is not Jesus: in his tenderness, his love, his meekness. And ideologies are rigid, always. Of every sign: rigid.
“And when a Christian becomes a disciple of the ideology, he has lost the faith: he is no longer a disciple of Jesus, he is a disciple of this attitude of thought… For this reason Jesus said to them: ‘You have taken away the key of knowledge.’ The knowledge of Jesus is transformed into an ideological and also moralistic knowledge, because these close the door with many requirements.”
“The faith becomes ideology and ideology frightens, ideology chases away the people, distances, distances the people and distances of the Church of the people,” Francis added. “But it is a serious illness, this of ideological Christians. It is an illness, but it is not new, eh?”
He said Christian ideology was the result of a lack of true prayer.

Does anyone here get the message here? He (the Pope) Is absolutely correct, (IMO)and no, I am not Catholic. God surely weeps. And Joe, we're not alone in our status..

We're also not in end time prophecy, (not mentioned there) I'm sorry to say..oops, that would be a different thread.

...so the Commandments are open to interpretation?

Thou shall not commit adultery...unless she really asks for it?

    ...come on! ...seriously?

I'm not Catholic either, but this Pope is NUTS!!

No they are not. Not at all. Not what I said. Why would you draw that conclusion, Yakpoo? I will re-read the article to see if I have mis-read something. Something about missing Jesus comes to mind..ideology trumping..

I'll think on it, and be back.

Sorry...perhaps I misunderstood what you were saying. It sounded like you agreed with Joe...there are no guiding standards in life. Maybe not...but I like to think there are.

Yep, I've read the article again. I stand firm. Do you believe he is off base? Many Christians do forget the Jesus part. The faith, the heart.. That is my belief. I could be narrow minded on this. I'm sorry.

An honest opinion is never "narrow-minded" as long as you're open to other perspectives. Personally, I don't think that praying is more important than not killing.

Guiding standards..for me, Holy Bible. I am a fundamentalist, a born-again, bible toting Christian.

And about as far from perfect as a person could be!

    And saved.

Perhaps I don't understand what the Pope is saying. Please help me understand.

The first sentence.."warned Christians against turning their faith into a rigid ideology.." And all that follows. My way of thinking Christianity without Christ is nothing but words.
That's what I take away from that article.

Perhaps it is I that is not understanding. Since Joe posted it, I'm sure it is not well intended, but rather is a slam for Christians. (No offense to JoeNation intended). Shouldn't be a slam, merely a reminder..

The message I "think" Joe is trying to convey is that having a moral compass and faith in guiding force larger than oneself is somehow anti-Christian. Others may believe that, but I (very respectively) do not.

As I routinely say, please speak for yourself, I can speak for myself just fine.
I think Lucy has a genuine Christian foundation that doesn't seem to rely on hatred of gays or any other groups. I'll give her credit for being the kind of Christian that many here seem to have no association with even though they claim to be Christians. I grew up with the most wonderful Christian family next door. I know what a good Christian from a bad Christian is as a result. I still am closer to these people today than I am to several members of my own family. They never judged, preached, or hated any other person or religion. They were just good people. I see little of them in the "Christians" I see today. I am not religious but I am happy to have people believe as they wish. It is only when these groups try to push their beliefs on me or my country that I find them intolerable. There is nothing more elitist than a religious belief that feels they are the only ones with the answers. How silly. Jesus would be running as fast as he could away from these ideologues but then again they all claim to know what Jesus wanted even while ignoring his words. I have no time for ideologues but I do have time for people like my old neighbors and friends because they are such good people.

Joe: We should kill unwanted babies
    Yak: No...killing is wrong

Joe: No...it's cruel to bring unwanted babies into the world
Yak: You're right...people should use self control to only give life in a loving family unit

Joe: No...recreational sex is really cool and mistakes happen
Yak: No...you should refrain from recreational sex.

Joe: You're crazy yak...men have recreational sex all the time...why not women?
    Yak: ...because women become pregnant.

Joe: You're anti-woman! What if a woman is raped or becomes pregnant through incest
Yak: Yeah, that's a bad thing. Perhaps women should have options under those conditions

Joe: So killing babies is OK?
    Yak: No...it's still not OK.

Joe: How can you have a double standard?
Yak: It's a question of who suffers more.

Joe: You're just too wrapped up in your ideology
Yak: No I'm not, killing is wrong

Joe: Defending your ideology is mean and, therefore, un-Christian. Listen to the Pope!
Yak: Perhaps you're right...I don't want anyone to think I'm mean. Go ahead and kill the babies...

What I got out of it is him speaking against turning religios faith into political ideology, ie radical based rule such as the Taliban, cleric rule, and so forth. We see that even here in the states to a small degree. Such ideology perverts both religion and government to the point that neither is relevant to the ideology it was rooted in after a certain point. This very topic is and will always be one of the main reasons I detest all religions today. I've nothing against those who practice for the sake of faith, but to see it used to push an ideal moral or agenda down the throats of all, is taking the spiritual ness out of worship and replacing it with intolerant fanaticism.

True...but the taking innocent life is still wrong and shouldn't be "tolerated".
