Ok, I have tried to filter through some of the topics here and I've been a little dejected. What I've viewed forces me to ask, does ANY actual logical debate occur ? Yes, facts are stated, numbers, links, articles, ect... But does anyone ever acknowledge that their "opposition" may have a point ? Why would someone want to debate, if their position is never recognized as possibly being correct ? I've wanted to partake in some of the discussions, but it appears to be the same rhetoric repeated over and over, everyone measuring their genitalia. Tell me I have not dug deep enough into the archives. I want to believe there is more here than bipartisan bickering. I tried to attach a poll, but it is apparent that you cannot go back and change the number of choices after making the original choice.
No logical debate is possible. Everyone has a partisan viewpoint. Everyone is certain that they are correct. But most of the important issues will never even come up. People have been conditioned to act this way by the two major political parties to make them easier to control and to gradually impose a totalitarian dictatorship upon the nation with half of the nation unaware of it and the other half cheering them on. It worked. The Republic is doomed.
No, that is why I have quit...I just give my opinion and move on Debate here consists of insulting the other person (or belittling his views)...calling them names...the basest form of exchange, acting as if the person you are debating is 'uninformed, uneducated, brainwashed, etc...one great tactic is to call a person gay, a terrorist sympathiser, stereotype them or call them a name until you are the last one willing to post in the thread as all others have left it in disgust. Its a 'I must win' situation...not a free exchange of ideas...not worth it.
This is the way all political forums end. I've seen it several times and I believe I predicted it in one of my first posts to PRWE. I would guess that at some point this forum will be discontinued.
ROTFLing. So very true. Speaking of politically charged events. I'm going on a MC ride today with the South Dakota chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders. There has been a rumor of some people threatening to disrupt a Military HomeComing Event. There should be a couple hundred of us... Ben
Rotobeast. 99 says it best when he says no logical debate is possible and I have to agree with him, now that said I will also add that in my opinion as long as OLD DAN, DANR, AND MOEN are here I will stay because there in nothing on TV in the summertime that is as funny as these three guys going at it. Bruce.
It sort of depends on how much immaturity you are willing to tolerate. Several members here aren't interested in debates and prefer to stereotype, jab at, name call, and try to fit their idea of the opposition into a tight little box that will reassure themselves that they are absolutely correct. Even if you say something they agree with, they can't acknowledge it because then you aren't neatly typecast into their belief system. It's just sort of an intellectual immaturity that is tolerated and should be ignored instead. It would soon go away out of boredom if people didn't respond to it but unfortunately, too many do.
Why do guys think the saying " never discuss politics & relgion" is so well known ? I know I've heard it repeated my entire life. I can recall 70 year old family members saying it when I was 5 !! Boy Howdy - even I fear to tread in these waters :vanish:
You're right about that, Bruce. It is fairly entertaining if you go at it with a good attitude and don't mind the rough and tumble environment.
I have been a part of political discussion forums that work...the things is...most people need to respect each others opinions...a certain level of open mindedness and acceptance (not equal to agreement) and maturity must be kept. Sadly for a political debate to be successful it cant be a free for all and it requires moderation and rules to be followed. In the forum I am referring to one cannot call others names, infer things about the other person and his or her personal life...hyperbole is quickly recognized and discounted, name calling and ad homonym attacks are quickly dealt with so if you want to stay in the debate you will only deal with the issues...spamming a thread constantly is also not allowed. What is left on this forum is a bunch of regular posters from right to left that have heated debate never lowering themselves to personal attacks and transparent tactics that attempt to take issue with the poster and not the issues the poster is bringing up And in truth...nobody here can truly attack a person personally because they dont know each other well enough to know personal details about each others lives, what kind of people each of us are in real life. So any personal attack is mostly assumption or just simply made up... a weak tactic used by someone who is unable to debate an issue correctly...whose words and ideas do not stand on their own so they divert to stereotyping those who disagree, clumping them into pre conceived 2D stereotypes so they dont have to deal with what they have to say. If you dont like what I am saying, just poke at me by belittling my intellect, labeling me as something...win by being the last one standing and having the thickest skin...able to bicker and isult the most. What I believe this forum has been, on the whole, is a place to throw the garbage that is unwanted on the main part of the forum. The powers that be dont want or care for this to be a good place to go for rational minded debate...as this is not a political debate forum, it is a coin forum...so they started this section for people to go and rant and rave, argue and bicker about all those things not related to coins. Which is probably a good idea but there are some here so extreme and one minded...so obsessed about certain things they realized that it at least needs a small amount of moderating. If good political debate was impossible, there wouldnt be a debate club and debate teams at every HS and college...it requires rules, moderation, decorum, mutual respect, maturity, and most of all...the ability of posters to listen and counter, remove emotion, and be rational. Otherwise it just become insults, bickering, hyperbole, and attacks...
Drusus. Thank you that was a excellent post I only hope we see more of that kind of thinking here. Bruce.
*applauds* Very nicely put. Thank you to everyone for your replies. My fears were confirmed. I shall merely lurk here and maybe pop in for an occasional quip.
On this you are mistaken. Had you been around before this section existed you would be aware of why this section was created - it was done because of repeated and numerous requests made by the members of Coin Talk. They literally begged for it for years. Finally their wishes were granted. And they were given free reign to do with it what they will - to make of it what they wanted. And that they did. It was only in recent weeks that a decision was made to change that part. As usually happens, people forget their manners. They forget how they were raised and that they were taught to treat others with respect. Because of the internet format they think they can get away with uncivilized behavior. They say things to others they would not dare to say in person because they know they would get punched in the mouth. And so, changes were made. Rules, albeit more relaxed that in other areas of Coin Talk, have been instituted, moderators have been assigned and the rules will be enforced. Things will change.
