  1. instead of wasting my life away on usenet, i hace been off reading yet
another sci fi/fantasy trillogy. this time it was the brian aldis
    heliconia one.

i liked the first book. the second took me a while to take to it and
the third one just made me think about the history of the church and
monarchy here with how the populace is manipulated for a facists own
ends. over all. i think the series has been over rated.

at least i have the dragon masters by vance to read now which i'll
start in about 30 mins. i picked it up pretty cheap in oxfam last week
for ?1.39. after that, i have no idea what i'm going to read next.

I just grabbed _Space Opera_ by him, which is, strangely enough, about an
    opera in space . . . .

There was a _Lexx_ epi about that, "Brigadoom", which I have on DVD but
don't watch, since I'm seriously allergic to bad singing and music . . . .

I'm not quite sure of the chronology, and am too lazy to look, but it
really seems like it was the first really smooth novel by him-- you can
see him struggling a bit with his early novels, in the 1950s, especially
with characters, although he's always been mind-bogglingly good at
description, and his language started out good and got ever more elegant
and colorful over the next four decades or so).

_The Dragon Masters_ I thought was minor, although good and lively and
bizarre enough to be an award-winning novel (he tossed off-- I know that's
an unfortunate British slang expression, but too bad-- _The Last Castle_
free for some editor to make up for some contractual obligation and it won
    awards, too).

_Emphyrio_ is dark and complicated but good.

i look forward to reading it. so far the dragon masters hasn't been
over exciting and i'm about 1/3 of the way through it.
