instead of wasting my life away on usenet, i hace been off reading yet another sci fi/fantasy trillogy. this time it was the brian aldis heliconia one. i liked the first book. the second took me a while to take to it and the third one just made me think about the history of the church and monarchy here with how the populace is manipulated for a facists own ends. over all. i think the series has been over rated. at least i have the dragon masters by vance to read now which i'll start in about 30 mins. i picked it up pretty cheap in oxfam last week for ?1.39. after that, i have no idea what i'm going to read next.

I'm not quite sure of the chronology, and am too lazy to look, but it really seems like it was the first really smooth novel by him-- you can see him struggling a bit with his early novels, in the 1950s, especially with characters, although he's always been mind-bogglingly good at description, and his language started out good and got ever more elegant and colorful over the next four decades or so). _The Dragon Masters_ I thought was minor, although good and lively and bizarre enough to be an award-winning novel (he tossed off-- I know that's an unfortunate British slang expression, but too bad-- _The Last Castle_ free for some editor to make up for some contractual obligation and it won awards, too). _Emphyrio_ is dark and complicated but good. -- tinmimus99@hotmail.com smeeter 11 or maybe 12 mp 10 mhm 29x13 A morphote, resting on a log, made an incomprehensible gesture and slipped off into the undergrowth. < _The Gray Prince_
