I hosted a baby shower one summer under the pignut tree (it's prolly a couple hundred feet tall). Boy did my friend pick the wrong month to be pregnant. Every time the leaves rustled, we got bombed. You gotta let them age in the root cellar. And they're a pain to shell. But when the chips are down, and you've eaten your last potato, and roasted your last pig, they're sweet, oily and quite nutritious. Plus they attract pigs, deer, turkeys and squirrels, which are also tasty and quite satisfying, with or without a mashed pignut side dish and pignut pie for desert. -- nuts
