Dear PD: Edison found a suitable filament for the first commercial
light bulb by trial and error. If a person inventing can get insight
from what went before, by all means use that insight. I'm glad you
mention "the Scientific Method". Albert Einstein knew absolutely
nothing about that. He just blindly accepted the notions of others
without any math checks nor experimentation. To this day, there has
never been a math check, nor an experiment, which confirms E = mc^2.
Thanks for "partially" agreeing with me. Perhaps there is hope for
    you yet! ? NoEinstein ?

OK, that's one element of the light bulb. Now consider the other
aspects of the light bulb, such as the size of the filament, the gas
in the bulb. Oh, and whether power should be delivered AC or DC. Trial
    and error? Think again.

That's incorrect. He was quite familiar with the body of experimental
    evidence.

    -----------------------------
i am afraid you didnt go far enough by understanding human activity
    and behavior :

any act of a (sane ) human being is to enhance his well being
even if you go to an entetaionment show
it is for contributing something to your health your moral
    your mood etc
that is a built in behaviour in owe 'human machine'
to imporove ower life and MAINTAIN our wel being

even if you are not aware why and how that behavior was** planted* in
you during millions (or even thousands ) of years !!(by
    evolution !!!)
no sane human being is doing anything just for ocupying himsef
because even then it has some more basic benefit
    so
any act of a sane human being is toget some BENEFIT
    out of it
even maintaining life is a human benefit
    so
just to sit and phylosophise science is good as
    playing bridge
soif you see the roll of science to be as playing
    bridge
    you are welcome
but in that case i amj not becoming a big admirer of you
i was educated to admire PRODUCTIVE PEOLE
    ie
first of all peple who earn ther bread and butter litreally
soif you tell me that a scientific work might advancing science
and consiquently advance welfair of people
    i agree
but just to sit and make some activity that will never advance
science is void at least for me and i believe many others
the main goal of scientific activity should be
    tobring some practical use !!
i am sure it was like that all along history
9and all along history mankind had master parasites and bumps
    as well )
    so please dont encourage them
    and please remember that
    that
TOO MANY SCIENTISTS SIT ON PUBLIC BUDJETS !
and the tax payers expect som rewards to the money
    they earn so hardly !!
    now btw
    since you mentioned Faradey:
after he invented the electric dynamo
he and his invention were presented toking Victoria
    so she asked him
'what use could be from that '
(pleae note the her question about USE .....)
and faradey who was unlike todays peole
    an extremely modest person answered
    something like
' i dont know .... may be some day it could be taxed '
    btw
while i heard it for the first time
i felt a shiver along my body !!
so modest and so powerful was that man !!
    he himself didnt know

that every day and every moment we have to kiss his hands
(yes hands !! he was a son of a poor blacksmith
and was building that first dynamo
    WITH HIS 10 FINGERS !!!

so those are at least for me
    my hero worships !!

Um, bad example. Thomas Edison did EVERYTHING by trial and error. He
stumbled upon Direct Current first and because it worked for him in his
laboratory he refused to switch to the Alternating Current used by Tesla
because he couldn't bring himself to publicly admit that Tesla was right
about anything. The electric chair came about because Edison publicly
electrocuted dozens of dogs in an attempt to force congress to outlaw AC
as too dangerous for use by the public. Edison was never a theorist, he
was an empiricist and made tens of thousands of lightbulbs with different
combinations of components and chose the best that he ran across.

And he was constantly checking his own calculations. The cosmological
constant came about because Einstein didn't have faith in his
calculations that disagreed with the body of opinion at the time. Weird
example as he later claimed the cosmological constant was the greatest
mistake of his career, then after his death it was found to be necessary
    again.
