    Necessary ?

If you want contol of your life, even the two years of a mandatory service it will take more people per capita
to make that happen. You will not ever have that much control while wars continue.
Ideal situation, no war. Real situation, they will follow us here and they have. To have a home guard from those who have done a certain amount of service for the state would be a huge plus if worst comes to pass. For those who have done service during war for this country, most are now older. But they will provide some knowledge, medical etc.
A friend lost his son to an explosion that took out his Humvee. I am not sure he or his wife will recover. He had been in the Army Air calvary and so to his son. It was very painful to thank him for his sons service but he knows to live this life we want it takes more then a upper level college degree and a job with a fortune 500 company.

Making it mandatory or a requirement for people to earn their rights would be a violation of the freedom that our armed forces have fought to defend. Period.

" No Free Lunch " be part of a solution, that would include any thing of value to your nation. It is a difficult choice when other people have been carring the load to make a change. Change and being adaptive is what has kept us way ahead of other nations. You might have a skill that requires nothing to do with combat.
More then fifty percent of all services are support staff. It will not be what is taken from you, it is what you will willing give to the enemy.
Events unfold and now poison gas is being used in Iraq ( Chlorine ) .

This is, and will remain an unproven theory. The beauty of it is that it doesn't even require a precise definition of "they." The US military has been omnipresent in various countries in the Middle East for some time now. They didn't "follow" us here because we never left there. It would be a more accurate statement to say that "they came over here because we are over there," or "they came here after we went there." We have no way to know if they will follow us here until we leave there. There is no evidence that they will, because once we leave they will have achieved their objective and to jeopardize that outcome doesn't seem probable, but it makes an effective scare tactic for those who wish to continue the war.

It's amazing how much trouble it can cause when a couple of innocent sounding words are misused.

When I was a kid and didn't understand why we would go all the way to Vietnam to fight, I asked an adult why we were there. I remember being told that if we didn't fight the communists there we'd have to fight them in America. That didn't make sense to me because we started the fight, we came home and they didn't come here, and I just couldn't see them jumping on boats and steaming towards American shores to land on our beaches.

I really can't see boat loads of Middle Eastern Muslims landing on our shores trying to conquer us with their military the way we have so frequently done to other countries. They could hijack some planes and cause some damage to us again but destroying their country isn't going to make that less likely and perhaps more likely. So I guess we are again having the rhetoric of "fight them on their soil before they come to our shores", shoved down our throats again even as the likelihood of that event happening continues to be nil. I suppose some of us learned our lesson the first time and are just not buying it this time around. :high5:

those people joined the army willingly to become soldiers for a wide range of reasons...they join to be soldiers willingly and are paid to do so, its their job. If we need more men...we will draft them...this nation has a voluntary army and IMO should stay that way. Nothing has changed from WWI to WWII to Vietnam to the current situation to make us change the policy IMO. My whole family (save my wife and mother) has willingly served...young men are joining and serving as well, my nephew is serving right now...my cooworkers son is serving...

Its probably a difference in how we see the current situation in world events...I expect we see things very differently and probably see very different courses of action that should be taken...

    Terrorists

    Excuse, "they" would mean Terrorists.
"You" would mean as in help in some way.
We as in "WE" Have voted in mutiple administrations that have not taken care of the citizens as per The Constitution. If you can vote your part of the answer.
" Them " The people who continue to corrupt our GOVT.
" Fight " As in fight the enemy, not each other.
"Rhetoric"Way to late for a whole lot of politically correct language .

Only if you really believe that every single Muslim is a terrorist and not just another American citizen. By your logic, every high school kid is a mass murderer because of Columbine. How can you seriously compare this to an invasion?

Sorry, but that isn't good enough if you expect people to die for it. Terrorism is a tactic, not an enemy that can be defeated. It's pretty effective to frighten people into submission, sort of like believing in monsters or burning witches. I just wanted other readers to learn a bit about recognizing the language and methods used to keep this nightmare going, and how it doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. Millions of dollars of focus group testing goes into the precise wording of the political language we are bombarded with. It's pretty convincing if you don't think about it, which is what some folks are counting on.

    Study ?

Terrorism has been used by prosecuters of war since the beginning of time. The Japanese were masters of terrorism in China Before WW2. They used attacks similar to 9/11 at pearl Harbor. We defeated them.as did the terror produced by Germany. We now deal with groups who work in and out of soverign nations. They are smaller but have stong capability. Who will you call in a dire situation ? Have you ever witnessed the mindless hate that pushes terrorists and what they wish to obtain ?
Our own civil war almost destroyed this nation over slavery and other issues. It is time to put aside any and all differences and concede we need to work together to keep this country safe.
The study has been done ! Millions of tons of oil to N/Korea for a temporary halt to the enrichment of uranium. Iran will not stop a vast nuclear program to use nuclear power to make electricity ?
The difference between a socialist and a communist. A socialist will kill you before you are born, a communist
    after.
What are you willing to die for, your family, your way of life, your country ? Or will you gladly give it up to the next person who just wants to take it ?

    Pepperoni,

You are correct that terrorism has always been around. That's why it was chosen as the replacement battle for the cold war. It's an endless game of whack-a-mole that forever ensures that there will never be peace and the military-industrial complex and their financiers will continue to feed at the public expense. What seems to be little understood is that the present situation isn't a problem, it's the plan. I'm not at all concerned that some trans-oceanic giant is going to step across the ocean and conquer the US. If it happens, it certainly won't be Iraq, Iran, N Korea or Venezuela that does it. For the life of me, I can't understand why those who think like you are so terrified. The United States spends more money on lawn service and vacations than the combined GDP of those nations. Part of living in the most powerful nation in history is that we can ignore the small stuff -- if we choose. I'll choose peace and continue to speak out for it. If you feel compelled to go die for whatever the administration has you convinced is the cause of the day, I wish you well. But don't create straw men so that you can send others to do your bidding.

Oh man..thats classic propaganda, I feel like I just went back to the 50's and am reading a speech from McCarthy...

for the second part...all of the above...thats why I willingly enlisted (to be honest I enlisted for college money). Thats probably why anyone enlists...money and / or a sense of duty. I simply dont see the need to change that. This nation has faced extreme threats before without having to change that, we can face any to come the same way. If need be, we draft...simple enough. Dont let the terrorists scare you into changing what makes this country great...freedoms. I see no need to change the way our army works simply because some radical muslims are on the move and some tin pot dictators are waving fists and threats.

I brought this topic up to a few people I know who are serving now, I was a bit surprised to heard they were against it...they said it would lower the standard of the military (they already believe the military standards have lowered lately) forcing people who are dont want to serve to join.

    Nuff said.

    Cloudsweeper;
How many times do you have to be reminded that terrorist and their ilk are looking to destroy in concert with other sovereign nations this country.Western Europe is also a large target.
You must have missed the 3000 people killed in the WTC , the first WTC bombing, embassy in Africa, Train in Spain and England , Marine Barracks in Lebabon, etc. Now they are using WMD in Iraq. (NOt to worry) !

You are not informed of what is happening in the world or think we are invincible. We are until we are not.

I don't think it should be mandatory or compulsory, but if you want the right to vote, hold political office, work in govt service (local or state) own property, etc you should serve for a minimum of two years (male and female alike.

Not a bad idea bq! Two to three years of compulsory service would probably do our youth a lot of good. I don't think everyone realizes how many non-combat jobs there are in the military. For each soldier in combat, there are many more working in support rolls. Just about any civilian occupation has its equivalent in the military. The military advanced training I received in the army was excellent! The discipline I was trained in along with it didn't hurt me any either.
