This certainly seems the logical outcome, and worries me a lot. Have we as a society decided then that higher ed does not benefit all of society? There was an era not too long ago -- my parents' and grandparents' generations -- when only the wealthy had kids going to college. The difference then was that society was filled with jobs and trades that non-college kids could do, that needed to be done, everything from shoe repair to manufacturing to farming. Will we then return to local jobs and local production of goods and services to employ the kids who are not college bound? What becomes of the kids who don't go to college? They can't all go into service industries to serve the wealthy.
You would have had to have been exactly in the center (and you weren't)... I was one point up and one point left of center, but was unable to figure out how to post it here.
Then the university has been corrupted. A university should be a place to get an education and not a profit making organization. Is it any wonder that our education system has tanked in recent years>
It is like the conservatives claiming the liberals are engaging in social engineering while insisting on banning abortion, criminalizing homosexuality and attempting to control who can get married to who.
For the record most of the RWers here seem to be of a more Libertarian bent at least as far as gays are concerned They are supportive of marriage equality, and gay equality in general. For me this was not what I'd expected and was a nice surprise. What we don't seem to have here (yet) is a strong Fundamentalist Christian/Conservative Catholic/Mormon RW presence and it seems to me that they are the ones who usually want the government to impose their religious laws and prejudices on everyone else.
I can only comment on those who posted there. I have no way (or desire) to try to figure what you were thinking but couldn't do.
The American Dream So what is the American Dream these days compared to yesteryear? Is it the same as 20 or 30 years ago? Perhaps but can one achieve it as easily these days? Methinks not. Is it the Ward Cleaver era? Ward goes to work, June stays home and makes cookies for Wally and Beaver? Everything is just swell? No it's not and it hasn't been for a long while. These days if a kid managed to land 2 or 3 jobs (unlikely) it wouldn't even pay for tuition. It becomes survival basically. You have two jobs so you can survive. The American Dream is basically dead. It has been for quite some time. I guess it depends on where you live to really see it. I live in an industrial area. Steel mills specifically. I've seen guys that put in 40 years to lose their pensions and hopefully work at a gas station. Problem is they know nothing but steel mills. They have no other skills. Of course they started off with the American Dream and now are scraping. So much for the American Dream. I suppose they deserve this. After all they didn't work hard and get the degree so they could "better" themselves. They made the mistake of working hard to make a good living and support their families. They should have all gone to college of course. Problem is, if they did who would do the work? Yean, The American Dream.
Just to clarify: I did post there some days before your comment, but not in graph form. If you look you'll see I had taken the test twice. The first time was about 5 months ago and I was roughly half-way left and slightly down (from center), next to some bald dude who whined a lot... so I decked him... problem solved. You could argue the point that I flip-flopped, or was further away from center than you the first time if you'd like... both might be true.
Universities ARE state owned ususally land grant non-profits. Private schools are for-profit institutions.

The governor of Tennessee has decided to start placing curfews on the places where the protests are happening in the state. Of course, so far the curfew is only in place in Nashville. However, I do wonder when they will start to spread. I should have know what Tennessee would be one of the first to start openly attacking the right to assemble. Haslam administration imposes curfew on Capitol
Why would Tennessee be any different from anywhere else? Is it because Al Gore is from Tennessee? I don't see the correlation...
The people in Tennessee tend to be extremely conservative and hate anything which is different. They don't like liberals, atheist, gays, mormons, etc and they see nothing wrong with suppressing other peoples rights. I have lived hear since 1989, but it is better than Alabama.
