Let's put this in perspective. After the surrender of the Japanese there was a period (7 or 10 ) years afterwards that hold-outs and opium dealers who continued to terrorize the occupying troops -- USA.

Now my old man fought there in the United States Marine Corps and definitely saw unpleasant/bloody action in the defense of Henderson Field.

Did he kill any Japanese? Yes he was trained to look at it like squirrel or coyote shooting...

He always felt that the really bad oriental drug kingpins were behind the invasion of the southern half of Korea by the Communist north due to the mild climate, making it ideal for opium growing.

Yep, he fought in that war too and retired in 1957 or 1958. After 26 years in the USMC he retired and started a family. I was born in 1960, LOL...

The bottom line is there is ALWAYS going to be the insane hold-outs who will not surrender. These are the ones who are making the news. News which BTW doesn't help the troops there trying to quell the insurgency. Did you know that the total number of deaths associated with both wars 'Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom" don't add up the those lost by the British in the battle of Jutland which they won...

Truman knew how to fight a war. He dropped two atomic bombs and took the will to fight away from the army, the Japanese main forces were still in China at the time.
Then McArthur and his staff wrote the Japanese Consitution and placed in a puppet government to run it.
Then we told the Emperor of Japan to tell the people he was not devine and took that religious aspect away forever.
Then we stayed there, wait we are still there to ensure that things stay straight.
