WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Tuesday said the six-party deal on North Korea's nuclear program was an important first step toward Pyongyang's denuclearization.

North Korea agreed to move on nuclear disarmament under a pact that will bring it about $300 million worth of aid.

"We think it's a very important first step toward the denuclearization of North Korea and the Korean peninsula," White House spokesman Tony Snow said.

North Korea will shut the Yongbyon reactor complex at the heart of its nuclear program and allow international inspectors onto the site as part of a disarmament plan reached at six-party talks among the two Koreas, United States, China, Japan and Russia.

Question for those who complain about the cost, how much would a Invasion or nuclear war cost? that is in lives and $$.

    North Korea

The N/K mafia has stated after our announcement that the halt will be temporary . This will give them time to do other items related to extracting cash from the world coffers. Possibly another insurance scam,or food deal with the U.N. . Hope is not what we need, hard core evidence would manifest itself as a new North Korea living with its`neighbors.

That type of logic can be used to perpetuate war everywhere. Better attack Russia, they are a threat. China is an up and comer with a growing military. Play it safe and wipe them out. Israel could turn at any moment and they have nukes. Another attack. Pakistan is islamic and has the bomb. Better put their light out before they put our ours. Cuba is too close. Dust off those invasion plans. Noreiga is back, so take out Nicaragua. Venezuela, goes without saying. Columbia, lets heat up the war on drugs. Japan probably never forgave us for Hiroshima so they have to go too. Some of the 9/11 terrorists were from Egypt so they obviously have to go. Syria must be doing something wrong even if we can't figure out what it is. And on and on it goes.

On the other hand, how much would it cost to just stay out of war altogether? That is in lives and $$. North Korea is a threat to their neighbors. Let them negotiate and pay. Personally, I'm tired of paying tribute to every two-bit nation that threatens to threaten us. When did we become so afraid of our shadow that we'll pay anyone who says boo!

    Nuclear

Can you see the ultimate danger ? Would you rather sit back and do nothing. If your unwilling to protect your freedom with necessary dialog, or force then you do not deserve freedom ! At any one time ,there are 15-20 conflicts taking place in the world. War is bad , a lot of good people get killed in bad wars. When you can give a road map to solving the desire for nuclear weapons I would be the first to listen.

Cloudsweeper can you please explain to me what countries the US is currently paying tribute to? and how my statement (which was actualy a question) can be seen as perpetuating war? At the moment the US is embroiled in 2 major conflicts Afghanistan & Iraq with the distinct possibility of a 3rd in Iran top this off with the anti terrorist campaigne and you are worried about paying NK off with a miserley 300 million bucks!!

    De Orc

Ps Peperoni there is no such thing as a good war people die, what would you sugest send in the Marines so your pride dont take a knock?

    De Orc,

America has/had a tradition of never paying off other nations to leave us alone. "Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute" used to be the slogan. That was back in the days before we turned cowardly [and globalist]. Frankly, I have no way to know how much we pay in tribute. Officially, the US pays about $13billion annually to other nations to get them to do what we want them to do. They know this and fully realize that there's money to be made by posturing in ways we don't like so that the money will show up in their Swiss bank accounts. About $6billion of that goes to Israel to defend them from their neighbors. Another $3billion or so goes to Israel's neighbors to defend them from Israel. This is madness. We "rent" military bases around the world in places with no strategic importance to the average American. Nobody knows how many more billions are in the "black budget" that is used to support this or that faction in more than 100 countries around the world. I don't care how small the amount seems to you. I wouldn't pay N. Korea a dime to keep them from attacking S. Korea; and I wouldn't pay S. Korea anything to help them defend themselves from N. Korea. I personally don't think either country is worth the life of a single US soldier, and if they insist on destroying each other if they don't get their money, so be it. I feel the same way about keeping the Sunnis and Shiites from killing each other. We pay to defend Taiwan from China. We pay to defend Japan from its imaginary enemies. We still have bases in Germany to defend them from the extinct Warsaw Pact forces, while the old Warsaw Pact soldiers are already in German shopping in the malls. Germany wants the bases there because of the huge amounts of money they pour into the local economies. Blackmail is blackmail no matter how you try to characterize it. Unfortunately, we seem to be governed by idiots who can't turn off the money spigot.

USA had similar agreement w/ KDPR in 1994, and see what happened. So not put hand on a$$ or might grow there. Kim Jong Il is liar - they make agreement to break it. You will see.

Cloudsweeper that is not paying tribute that is helping your allies, if you are unwilling to stand beside your freinds then why should anyone help you ? Do you want to take a chance that one of the missiles in the NK arsenal might hit US soil? The only countries that can effectivly harm the US are those with nuclear cabability, you can ignore the rest (yes there might be the odd bombing or assasination). It would not just be SK that bore the attack if it came you know, they would have nothing to loose so why not hit mainland America while they were at it and at least cause you some hurt, and what do you think China would be doing with nukes going off in it's back yard?.
You dont want your country to be the worlds sherrif, then pull your troops back within your own borders, it realy is that easy. Pull out of Afghanistan, Iraq, leave Iran & syria alone (But believe me they wont leave you alone) pull them out of South Korea, Europe, Japan, Cuba and any other place they might be. Within 6 months you would have Chinese influence on your doorstep.

    De Orc :kewl:

Ps meant to ask just what would you do about the NK nuclear programe ?

Oh come on Drusus are you trying to tell me that the US is paying out all this money as tribute!! That you fear attack by Yemen or Bangladesh! Aid is not Tribute. As for aid if you read my past posts you will see I am all for stoping aid to any country that is against us, let them go see how much there neighbours will cough up.
If paying NK 300 million saves having to invade and allows the dismataling of the nuclear program I am all for it. How many more lives do you want to see lost because you cant see past your pride. The US dont pay any country tribute, it might pay for a infomation or to be allowed to base troops, even to influence a goverment but tribute LOL As for every tin pot dictator just how many have nuclear cabability? NK has and so do the Pakistanies.

How many will start developing (or pretend to) and how many will start saber rattling if we just pay off every country that does? I believe we are hypocrites to have allowed pakistan (a country teaming with radicals and headed by a dictator) to have nukes...then we invaded Iraq for a hint and a whisper of WMDs...we are all over the place...

I never said I want to invade Korea...nor was I ever in favor of the Iraqi war...I was in favor only of goingin to afghanistan and maybe the tribal regions of pakistan in order to destroy the taliban and terrorists....

I do not think we should attack Korea unless the rest of the world does and contributes...felt the same way about Iraq...if the rest of the world is willing to sit on their asses and do nothing but talk to these people who have gone back on their word constantly...thats fine...If there is a direct threat to the US (like afghanistan) then we should act...let the UN sit there and circle jerk with tinpots who say one thing and do another all with their hands out wanting pay-offs...but let the UN pay them (not us) and let the UN do the talking and when these nutbags spill over into these other nations...let the UN handle that as well. We should only support nations that go our way...period...and not pay off kim jung NOT to develop nukes...let him stop first and stay stopped...then down the line maybe help him...as it is he is completely untrustworthy.

What I said was, war is bad , and a lot of good people get killed in bad wars .
Wars are a last resort in my opinion. Some take longer then others and all parties suffer to a great degree.
Unless we get terrorism in hand we will be the victims of this long build up of terror factions.
It has taken decades for the world to realize that terrorism is a number one priority. It is hard to understand the complexity of this gorilla war.
Think about the incidents that have led to this in the last three decades. Lebanon, Marine Barracks, 1980s ,
Embassy, Africa , WTC 1993 , WTC 9/11 ,Kobar towers, Spain, England, and a whole bunch we do not know about. There are facilitators who are sovereign nations that do not wish our way of life to continue. That is enough to send in the Marines for. Our way of life is what we want.
Very possibly World commerce is a bit futher away then we thought.
When all see this as a common goal ,then we will succeed.

What are you talking about? please read the following carefully...you NEED to read before you post...

they happen to be a large recipient of aid...which is why they are listed in a list of countries that receive aid...that was listed in alphabetical order....

as for this list I linked...they arent on a bad list...it is showing how often they voted against the US...which is 7%...the lowest of all of them...they happen to be at the top because they were the #1 recipient of aid on a list showing the top 10 recipients...but they have a GOOD record of voting with the US...so it isnt a bad list...it is simply how the top ten recipients of aid voted...It was posted more for the ones below them to show how they almost never vote our way.

do you even read things before you knee jerk?
