Give me a break Bush never vetoed a spending bill. He IS worse than any dem and many real conservatives are starting to see that (Bush is the socialist with his bridges to nowhere)
I already stated that I am ticked at the republicans for the 78% increase in discretionary spending since 2000. All presidents (Dem or Rep) need the line item veto...or maybe you don't know what that is?
Line item veto maybe too much power, the presidency should not become an imperial presidency (in case you are not familiar with the term check this link http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/76988_helen3.shtml) you have to cut and paste with this link it is that hard I am sure you can handle it. If you havn't noticed the White House are currently engaging in a massive power grab (I refrained from naming Bush because he is not the brains behind the operation, Cheney is back there like some James Bond villian). No single office or branch can rightfully hold that much power (seperation of powers). These things always backfire anyway, the people who you hate will eventually take power and do all sorts of "outrageous" things if this were to happen.
43 out of the 50 States give their governors the line-item-veto. Bottom line, it works so governors are not hit with a "take it all or veto it all" bill. Right now, the President has to take the entire bill (pork and all) or veto it. He can't keep the true meat of a well intended bill while dismissing the "bridge to no where" project and other ridiculous pork spending. The line item veto has and is working in 86% of our states! It would make law makers fiscally responsible as no legislator would like to be called out as to why they hid a "pork" provision in a given bill. On the other side, it would force the President to actually go through a bill so that he couldn't shift the blame to Congress. No more "take it all bills" loaded with back room dealings. You know how it works..."I'll vote for your project to study penquins in Iowa if you vote for my program to establish the poker hall of fame in Las Vegas." (I'm making up these provisions, but many are not that far off from the billions we spend on pork projects.) Every President wanted this, including Clinton, and for a brief time we had it until the Supreme Court lost their minds and rejected it by a 6 to 3 decision. Who brought the suit? A pork project that was going to be eliminated because of the line-item-veto.
It does not surprise me that presidents want this, they all want to increase their power except Washington (what a cool person I totally respect old George). I admit pork is way out of control (bridges to nowhere and all). If they do the line item veto they better put some REAL restrictions on it (and people smarter than the coin forum disscusion board better develop these). That imperial presidency thing is a HUGE threat to all the things we hold dear.
I would think that you are right since the 1980's were a long time for me to remember all the subtle details.
