Racing fans fire back at the Hill

Stock-car racing fans filled Lowe's Motor Speedway in North Carolina yesterday, erasing concerns that a political dispute in Washington had erupted into a full-scale health scare at NASCAR events.

Democratic House staffers, who were attending the Bank of America 500 race as part of a fact-finding mission of health and homeland security issues, took the unusual step of getting inoculated against several rare diseases and a sexually transmitted illness...

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - It got the GOP's engines revving - a Democratic official suggesting staffers get immunized for several diseases before heading south from Washington and into the Red State wilds of NASCAR country to conduct research at a pair of races.
The reaction on both sides illustrates just how valuable candidates for elected office consider the votes of NASCAR fans who pack grandstands by the thousands every weekend and the donations of business leaders who spend millions to sponsor the sport.
It started last month, when an official with the House Committee on Homeland Security suggested that staff aides get immunizations before visiting health facilities at Alabama's Talladega Superspeedway and North Carolina's Lowe's Motor Speedway, where the Bank of America 500 was run Saturday.
In an e-mail, a staffer who works for committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., noted an "unusual need for whomever attending to be vaccinated against hepatitis A and B," as well as "the more normal things - tetanus, diphtheria, and of course, seasonal influenza."

Sure don't want to catch anything those 'red necks' have! Just think how something like that could spread if it got back to Washington.

Forgive me but I can't even see why this made to news print. It was either a very, very slow news day or somebody though this "story" was actually of interest to anybody. In either case, I'll give it one big YAAAAAAAWN! [IMG]

I agree, and wews worthy it's not! But it does show the mind set of some of Washington's elected officials and their appointed help!

You can never underestimate the stupidity of those in elected office or those reporting on their activities.

I agree, Bennie Thompson needs to get out, step down and vacate the office. Maybe he should be clearing up all the illegal dog fighting operations that plague his state, then again he probably runs one or two...

One more hit, this time with a You Tube response...

Democrats Seek Protection from 'NASCAR People'

Who's afraid of NASCAR people? The answer is the Democrats.... so much so that they're vaccinating themselves so they don't catch any rare disease such as NASCAR cooties or the bubba virus. It sounds ridiculous right? Well, it is, but unfortunately, it's true.

The issue deals with a memo from the House Committee on Homeland Security which suggested that staff members receive vaccinations against hepatitis A and B in addition to other vaccinations before they travel to Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama and Lowe's Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Apparently, the Democrats believe that visiting with NASCAR fans is as dangerous to your health as visiting a foreign country. This naturally has local residents and NASCAR fans up in arms and has provided some ammunition for Republicans.

At this past weekend's race in North Carolina, FOX News notes that NASCAR fans were more than ticked off at the Democrat memo:

Still, race fans didn't appreciate an advisory by the Democratic head of the Homeland Security Committee telling aides to get a series of immunizations before heading down to investigate health care facilities at the Talladega Super Speedway in Talladega, Ala., and Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.

The recommendation was "probably Washington bureaucracy and prejudice to the South, somewhat," one fan told FOX News.

Shouldn't you be beating the drums for Larry Craig instead of this non-issue? This seems like a stretch at best.

I think the GOPUSA webblog you copied and pasted this story from was just reaching for a scandal that didn't involve the GOP and this was all they could come up with.

I have beat the drums for Craig's resignation, just not here. He should step down as well...

Yes, looks like LC's troubles are pretty much behind him with very few ripples, and I think he should get out NOW, but BT's troubles are just starting. And, with the entire NASCAR Nation in an uproar over his inflammatory prejudicial statements you can be sure, he's not in the catbird seat...

I hear that the NFL Nation is coming out on his side as well as the NHL Nation and the NCAA Nation. LOL

I've never seen a clearer case of the tail wagging the dog and you want so much to buy into it. If there eventually is any kind of "uproar" from this, it will only be because people are looking for a reason to be offended.

I have to say of the NASCAR crowd, if you can sit and watch a bunch of cars go around a track 500 times, a good crash might be the only way to make it interesting. I think that they're all high on exhaust fumes.

Sorry, it was just a joke poking fun at the idea of a "NASCAR Nation". But I'm sure some blog from the other side will counter with something just as innane. My mistake was believing that this actually made it into the printed media. Wag that dog boys!

A source is reporting that that Dale Earnhardt Jr., will be driving the "Bennie Thompson" Homeland Security Chevy this Sunday. What a HOOT... :D
