Illinois AG who led Countrywide settlement may make gubernatorial run
    NLJ

    Lynne Marek / Staff reporter
    October 7, 2008

CHICAGO - Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who led the discussions
that resulted in an $8.7 billion national settlement with mortgage lender
Countrywide, said that she may run for governor of the state.

In response to a question from reporters following announcement of the
Countrywide settlement Monday, Madigan said at a press conference that she
was "thinking about" a run for the state's top office.

Madigan's father is Illinois House of Representatives Speaker Michael
Madigan, who like his daughter has sparred over budget issues with Illinois
Governor Rod Blagojevich, particularly since his second gubernatorial term
    began in January 2007.

A spokeswoman for the attorney general, Robyn Ziegler, said that her boss
has given that answer before when asked by reporters, though perhaps in a
smaller press forum. "She is thinking about it, however, her priority in
politics at this time is to get [Illinois] Senator [Barack] Obama elected
president," Ziegler said in an interview.

Madigan, who had sued Countrywide over alleged predatory lending practices
in signing up homeowners for risky and costly mortgage loans, led the
settlement discussions with California Attorney General Jerry Brown and
reached a pact with Countrywide parent Bank of America that covers 11
states, a press release from Madigan's office said. The settlement
establishes a mandatory home mortgage modification program under which
hundreds of thousands of homeowners nationwide will be able to amend their
loans and stay in their homes.
