I went out this am and the stupid dog had taken his big bolster during
this single-digit night and ripped its innards out-- some sort of plastic
wool-- and spread 'em across the yard, so I started gathering it all in
order to try to reassemble the thing a little more sturdily, and oh man
within a minute my hands started burning, and by the time I finished they
were stiff and numb-- I had to pick up the final bits, and operate two
doorknobs, by sight, since I couldn't feel any of it-- and after I got
inside they were still burning terribly after five minutes of armpit
therapy, so I became alarmed that I was suffering something along the
lines of Reynaud's phenomenon (massive vasoconstriction leading to tissue
hypoxia and necrosis) and ran some pretty hot water in a basin and plunged
'em in and held 'em there while deliberately hyperventilating (for the
extra O2), and within a minute or so that fixed 'em.

Nasty nasty nasty.

The dog's house is a hand-constructed four-foot cube built of IIRC
half-inch plywood, and under optimal Winter operating conditions has
double flaps, a layer of foam insulation underneath the roof, a bed of
straw and/or leaves (which he loves), carpet, rugs (2) and a
bolster/pillow almost as big as he is.

It's quite toasty inside when I reach in to do a nose-check (I pass food
in on nasty days, and always stick my hand in by way of notice, and a nose
immediately touches it).

OTOH, all those beautiful appurtenances are routinely destroyed and/or
kicked out by the stupid thing: It's not at all uncommon when I go out to
feed him in the morning or evening to find some or all of the innards
kicked out, even in rain or snow, and/or one or both flaps pulled loose or
torn to shreds, so there is routinely a rebuilding under less than optimal
circumstances while usually informing the animal loudly, vulgarly and
profanely of my opinion of his intellect . . . .

He also sleeps on snow.

biggest piece of bedding (technically a faux-fur blanket, or maybe it's a
floppy rug, I dunno, I got it from Big Lots, fold it to be furry on both
sides, and he seems to like it) out of his house into the middle of yard.
And was sitting happily by his outdoor feeding area wagging his tail
waiting to be fed.

I'm going to start kicking the planet right where it hurts to try to bring
Spring on a bit faster.

I have that - Raynaud's Disease (not the syndrome/phenomena which is a
secondary symptom of Something Else).

You know plunging frostbit bits into hot water is very bad and very
wrong.

For Raynaud's in the hands what you do is use centrifugal force -
swing your arms forcefully in big circles to literally 'fling' the
blood down into your fingers.

But you had frostbite. Your clue is the BURNING FRIGGEN PAIN as
they're warming back up. Takes less than 7 minutes (perhaps as little
as 1 or 2 minutes, I forget) in 0-F temps for exposed skin to start
freezing.

You should know that, too. BAD MIMUS

I understand...I frostbit both my index fingers last week cuz I had to
take them off the get the key in the ignition unstuck.

I feel your pain. Literally. I think we must be on the same
temperature plane....and when it swings like this, I get/stay sick.
