All joking aside, is this going to be the new mantra of the DNC. They are seeing their traditional voting blocks coming apart. Joe is right, if mandatory voting is enacted, then the uninformed and care less crowd will go flocking to the Democratic side because they are "cool" and have the celebrity endorsements to prove it. I doubt that this has a snowball's chance in hell of ever becoming law, but they are the ones pushing no proof of anything, just show up voting.

I think this would do very little to remove money from politics because the uninformed would likely just vote based on advertisements rather than actually educating themselves on the issues. If Obama really wanted to remove money from the political process, why not just propose a law making it illegal for candidates to accept corporate donations in excess of $1,000?

Because the SCOUS has ruled against such limits.

WASHINGTON — Having freed wealthy donors to give to as many political candidates and committees as they wish, the Supreme Court refused Monday to lift a ban on corporate contributions.

The case, brought by the Iowa Right to Life Committee, challenged that state's ban on direct donations by corporations. Some campaign finance experts had speculated it could be the next roadblock at risk with the court's conservative majority.

The high court last week struck down federal limits on the overall amount, currently $123,200, that donors can give to candidates, committees and political parties during a two-year election cycle. The 5-4 ruling in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission kept in place the limits on each individual contribution.

Republicans will never want anything near a 100% voting population. It is an admission of their minority status and that their numbers are shrinking every election. Their only hope of winning is low voter turnout. Angry old white people are a dying breed. I will be happy to see them get off of my lawn.

There is only one party that wants to and actively legislates for less campaign money restrictions and transparency. If Republicans could completely eliminate any campaign finance laws, they would vote to do it unanimously. They want neither campaign finance limits nor donor transparency. They only go into politics for the money. They want to get rich off of the political system first and foremost. If you don't know that much about the Republican party, you really don't know the Republican party.

HMMM? Interesting how this "minority status" with "their numbers are shrinking every election" managed to win their largest majority in nearly 100 years during this latest election.

Oh, come down off your high horse and stop acting as if Democrats don't go into politics for the money. There are few, if any, politicians who are in it for "the good of the people". Puh-leeze!

36% voter turnout. I thought that was made clear.

But you'd agree that Republicans occupy the same boat? I know that there are probably Democrats that line their own pockets while in elected office but I simply can't think of one Republican that doesn't. Can you name one?

Are you trying to say your party was not interested in voting? Maybe they were given reasons not to vote. Regardless, you lost!

I have an idea. If we have mandatory voting, instead of having the candidates name and political party on the ballot we can have each candidate write a 1-2 paragraph summary of their platform. The summaries would have to be 100% truthful, and not include political party names or the names of themselves or any other candidates. then the uninformed voters would have to choose the platform they like best instead of voting based on demographics or party. This would increase chances for third parties and prevent the parties from being able to take advantage of their candidates race or gender, but unfortunately it would not solve the problem of our right to vote becoming a duty :(.

So far, so good.. except for the "mandatory voting" part, of course because that would predicate the elimination of our right to vote.
Oooops, there's a major problem right there. There would be Democrats, for example who would state that they've increased the number of people on healthcare and just simply leave it at that. End of story. However, they wouldn't tell about the lies of not being able to keep your doctor or the fact that those same people were FORCED to purchase healthcare contrary to the liberty of a free society.
I anticipate more problems with this. Democrats would put words like "reparations", free food", "housing assistance", "free medical", "manna from heaven" in their 1-2 paragraph statements and would hook the low information voters just like they do now.
Oh, for the love of Almighty God, the Democrats would hate that! If they can't parade a black man out and (soon to be) a white woman, what chance do they have? They know they can't win on the issues, so they appeal to the lowest common denominators (race and sex) to garner votes.
Absolutely correct! Mandatory voting, by its very nature, would take away our right to vote. Obama, upon first hearing the idea of mandatory voting, should have said something like, "Get the hell out of my office". "I'm the leader of a free nation that enjoys and exercises our rights and liberties. Our citizens have fought for the right to vote and I'll do everything in my power to see they are guaranteed that right". "Under my watch, there's no possible way I will ever support mandatory voting, so leave my office or I'm going to have you kicked out of here. Don't bring your Socialist ideas around here anymore".

Those were some great points he brought up. All of them were true. Democrats/Socialists should watch this video and try to disprove any of his assertions. They can't do it.

Oregon becomes the first State to pass mandatory voter registration. California is following Oregon's lead. Meanwhile, back in Red State territory, more an more restrictive voter ID laws and poll tax type laws are passing every day. One party seems to be moving towards more inclusion while one party *cough *cough Republicans continue to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters.

And they like pretend that they are against dictators? Too, too funny.

Orwell nailed it! Only people lost in a cloud of delusion could state such a thing, not explain it, and just keep going. One of your gems for sure.
