    Well...not that far back...

Interracial couple denied marriage license in La.

NEW ORLEANS – A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said.

Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said. "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it."

If he did an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said.

"I try to treat everyone equally," he said.

What about whites and asians? Is that okay? I wonder about latino and whites...some of them latino and asians can kinda LOOK ALMOST white. Or is he just concerned about what people like him might do or think about blacks and whites mixin'. Reminds me of a discussion I had with Bonedigger and Old Dan :)

    Well,

I'm glad he wouldn't marry them. I doubt they would want to marry such an idiot myself.

Seriously though where does he come up with this? You've made some great comparisons here Drusus. Asians, Latinos?
My parents divorced when I was 12 and my dad married a Native American. Luckily there were no kids.

After all how would they get through life if they were smart, studied and worked hard?

I could go on about this stupidity for hours.

It is true and not that shocking if you live in the south, especially outside the bigger cities.

I am from New Orleans (born there and lived the early part of my life there). I am from the south from generations back, mother from Georgia, father from Tennessee and I now live in Houston. This is more blatant than most racism down here (these days) but this guys thinking is not a rarity here. I am married to someone not of my race and I had a child with her and when I said I was having a child here...Bonedigger and Old Dan expressed the same concern for our child and lamented how irresponsible we were for bringing a mixed race baby into this world. I assume because she would fall victim to people who hate such things (which seemed to be them)...We have yet to have anyone express to us they thought it was a problem. We have just had people tell us what a stunning beauty she is. They are not here any more so I will just say that even here on this forum people have expressed the same concerns.

Now my wife isn't black but she is Asian...that's why I was wondering if we would have passed the test in this guys eyes...our baby takes after her mother a bit more than me so she is obviously not white but you cant tell WHAT she is.

IMO, mixed race babies are often quite stunning...I believe my baby is a very stunning little girl who got the best of both of our genes...

Oh...and me and my wife have been married for 12 years now.

This story only mentions Blacks who want to marry Whites...I know that particular combination makes the bubbas cringe more than anything.

I honestly can not understand attitudes like this for me a person is not the colour of his/her skin, nor what religion or political beliefs they hold so much as what they are themselfs. How they behave and react towars me, other than that I hate everyon equaly :D

I have a zero tolerance policy on racism. If 2 people are in love and have made a responsible decision, who are we to judge them?

Racism is alive and well almost everywhere I'm afraid. Definately in the south.,and in the northeast (I've lived in both areas). The folks that have this affliction, unfortunately have embedded their feelings very deeply, no matter the color, resulting from their own life experiences.

Danr should read this. He thinks that its racist to say Mexicans are good landsacpers. He says they are also good brick layers too. If you have to mention how many black friends you have. Well enough said.

I am a white guy. I don't think I am allowed to talk about race. There's a rule or something about that.

As a white guy I find that offensive. We're allowed to talk about Puerto ricans.
