British police defuse bomb in London

LONDON - Police thwarted an apparent terror attack Friday, discovering a parked silver Mercedes that was packed with gas containers and a large number of nails. The attack would have caused "significant injury or loss of life," police said.

A British security official told The Associated Press that there were similarities between the device and vehicle bombs used by insurgents in Iraq.

"Forensic staff are still examining the device, but once we know more about it, we'll know more about what type of individuals are behind this," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the security details.

The official said Britain's domestic spy agency MI5 also would examine possible connections between Friday's incident and at least two similar foiled plots — including a planned attack on a West End nightclub in 2004 and a thwarted attempt to use limousines packed with gas canisters to attack targets in London and New York.

Officers were called to The Haymarket shortly before 2 a.m., a police statement said. Sky News cited witnesses as saying doormen from a nearby nightclub had reported that someone had crashed a Mercedes sedan into garbage bins and ran away.

The Haymarket is the site of restaurants, bars, a cinema complex and theaters, and there would have been crowds in the area.

The incident comes a week before the second anniversary of the July 7 London bombings, when four British Muslim suicide bombers killed themselves and 52 bus and subway passengers.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who took office on Wednesday, said the incident was a reminder that Britain faces "a serious and continuous threat" and the "need to be alert."

"I will stress to the Cabinet that the vigilance must be maintained over the next few days," Brown said.

The Bomb was planted very near to a very trendy nightclub that closes at about 3 in the morning, I hate to think what the damage would have been if it had gone off either last night or this morning during rush hou.

One more reason for the Western powers to stay out of the Middle East.

^^^Isolationism and a strict interpretation of the Constitution can NO LONGER be a viable plan of action in a world with Jet Airplanes, 7 Billion People, and Nuclear Weapons.

I think you should check the expiration date on that new term you recently acquired. It is smelling a little over-ripe.

Times have changed. Yet we still deal with the new paradigm as if we were fighting WWII all over again. We can not hope to ever achieve isolation again but we don't have to be in their faces either. It's a delicate balance we haven't been able to achieve with any success so far. There are just places in the world that we are not welcome and we don't seem to understand this. We treat the world as if we are entitled do whatever we wish. That attitude is bound to ruffle a few turbans. Don't ya think?

They'll either be at our throats or at our feet, it is up to us to decide which it will be

I think they have less interest in being in America than they have in us not being in their part of the world. They've said as much. So to naively believe that we have to kill them or be killed by them, just puts both sides in a no win situation with no possible compromise.
If we invented a car tomorrow that ran on air, we'd sit back and watch the Middle East sink into anarchy without the slightest concern. But that ain't the situation is it? So you have to ask yourself if we are the perpetrators here or the victims.

Have to say that I am so very glad to see your joy & relief that the bomb did not detonate and cause the usual sort of carnage that these devices do, I am overwhelmed by the feeling of support that you are showing for the people of London and on there behalf I thank you.

    Second Car Bomb Found

Police said the second device was found in a Mercedes hours after the car had been given a parking ticket in Cockspur Street and towed to Park Lane.

Another Mercedes, with a bomb made up of 60 litres of petrol, gas cylinders and nails, had been found outside a nightclub in Haymarket at 0130 BST.

Both devices were similar, viable and clearly linked, police said.

At a news conference on Friday evening, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism command, said the discovery of the second device was "obviously troubling".

"There was a considerable amount of fuel and gas canisters, as in the first vehicle. There was also a substantial quantity of nails," he said

You know if these two car bombs were found in India. It wouldnt even be posted here. Whats with you Americans and England. Do you still feel some sort of alligence to them? And the Constitution only applies in the USA. You're acting like a bunch of Torries. Where's the post that reads ''four million dead in Congo''in the last eight years? Still love you guys.

Or both at the same time. Right now, for example, they don't much want us in their countries, except when it's ExxonMobil pumping oil out of the ground, the US Navy guaranteeing that oil gets safely to its destinations, or the US-based multinational banks guaranteeing the safe transfering of billions in sales of that oil to the bank accounts of those activists protesting in the streets US foreign policy.

Well Craig it could have something to do with British troops fighting and dying alongside Americans in Iraq & Afghanistan, It could have something to do with the political support this country has given to the USA over the years, it could be to do with something as simple as we are about the only real friend your country has in the world.
How much support or Millitary assistance does India give you? or the Congo, France, Mexico, South Africa!! How much support do you get from them & the rest of the world in the UN?

No. I think that these redneck hawks are trying rationalize that white anglo-saxons are some sort of target. So because some nit wit carries out an act of revenge because his father was threatened. the middle east now sees us(Americans) as the enemy. We just keep picking the wrong side over there. the Shah of Iran had hundreds of thousand people killed without mercy. And we give him asylum. and Marcos too. Now Hussien ills a few thousand kurds 25 years ago(while we were still allies) and BAM! We have to eliminate him. I dont even know what a kurd is. Truthfully I never even heard of them 'til 2001. Still love ya.
