I see an awful lot of news reports describing Islamic suicide bombers, hate groups, religious fanatics, rioting, etc.

I don't believe there is any such thing as a "religion of peace" or a "religion of love." There are peaceful or loving or violent followers of every religion. Islam, in this age, has more violent and extremist followers than most. There was a time when Christians were just as bad, but what we think of as modern, Christian, Western society seems to have shed a lot of its violent past.

It's hard for me to believe that Islam is the cause of the violence; I think it's just a convenient justification (or a way of systemizing it) for those who have chosen violent methods. I suspect that the violence of Islamic fanatics is rooted not directly in their religion, but in a fairly complex interplay between their religion, tribalism, corrupt governments, economic disparity, lack of education, and mob mentality.

I've seen some statements in this thread that are very reminiscent of statements from violent Islamic fanatics.

    Today's world conflicts...Do you see a trend?

Well, let's look at the current world war sitution and let's see how the "religion of peace" fares:

Afganhistan: Extreme, radical Fundamentalist Muslim terrorist groups & non-Muslims (infidels). Osama bin Laden heads the terrorist group Al Quada (The Source) whose headquarters were in Afghanistan. Hopefully he is buried under tons of rock. They were protected by, and integrated with, the Taliban dictatorship in the country. Al Quada is generally regarded as having committed many terrorist attacks on U.S. ships, embassies, and buildings. Thank God our troops are there trying to kill these guys instead of waiting for the next attack here.

Bosnia: Fragile peace is holding, due only to the presence of peacekeepers. Who is at the core of fighting? Muslims

Côte d'Ivoire Following the elections in late 2000, government security forces "began targeting civilians solely and explicitly on the basis of their religion, ethnic group, or national origin. The overwhelming majority of victims come from the largely Muslim north of the country, or are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants..." Great! A new generation of islamic terrorist are now breeding

Cyprus The island is partitioned, creating enclaves for ethnic Greeks (Christians) and Turks (Muslims). A UN peace keeping force is maintaining stability. Good luck!

East Timor About 20% of the population died by murder, starvation or disease after they were forcibly annexed by Indonesia (mainly Muslim). After voting for independence, many Christians were exterminated or exiled by the Indonesian army and army-funded militias in a carefully planned program of genocide and religious cleansing.

India Animists, Hindus, Muslims & Sikhs Various conflicts that heat up periodically. In late Feburary of 2002, a Muslim-Hindu conflict broke out, killing an average of 100 people a day over the first five days.

Indonesia, in the province of Ambon. Christians (what's left of them) & Muslims After centuries of relative peace, conflicts between Christians and Muslims started during the summer of 1999 in this province of Indonesia. The situation now appears to be stable, for now.

Indonesia, province of Halmahera Christians & Muslims 30 people killed. 2,000 Christians driven out; homes and churches destroyed. Islamic terrorists are soooooo good at destroying things. The question is, "Have they ever built anything worth while and contributed to mankind?

Kashmir Hindus & Muslims A chronically unstable region of the world, claimed by both Pakistan and India. The availability of nuclear weapons and the eagerness to use them are destabilizing the region further. Thirty to sixty thousand people have died since 1989.

Kosovo Serbian Orthodox Christians & Muslims Peace enforced by NATO peacekeepers. There is convincing evidence of past mass murder by Yugoslavian government (mainly Serbian Orthodox Christians) against ethnic Albanians (mostly Muslim). The US supported the Mulsims and yet, they still want to kill us!

Kurdistan Christians, Muslims Assaults on Christians (Protestant, Chaldean Catholic, & Assyrian Orthodox). Bombing campaign underway.
Macedonia Macedonian Orthodox Christians & Muslims Muslims (often referred to as ethnic Albanians) engaged in a civil war with the rest of the country who are primarily Macedonian Orthodox Christians. A peace treaty has been signed. Disarmament by NATO is complete.

Middle East Jews, Muslims, & Christians The peace process between Israel and Palestine suffered a complete breakdown. This has resulted in the deaths of thousands, in the ratio of three dead for each Jew. Major strife broke out in late 2000 and is continuing. There's a shock.

Nigeria Christians, Animists, & Muslims Yourubas and Christians in the south of the country are battling Muslims in the north. Country is struggling towards democracy after decades of Muslim military dictatorships.

Northern Ireland Protestants, Catholics After 3,600 killings and assassinations over 30 years, some progress has been made in the form of a ceasefire and an independent status for the country. Finally...a non Mulsim conflict!

Pakistan Suni & Shi'ite Muslims are fighting each other. Hope we sit back and just watch. It will save us heartache later.

Philippines Centuries old conflict between the mainly Christian central government and Muslims in the south of the country. The President of the Philippines has asked the U.S. for help to deal with these mulsim extremists that pretty much need to be destroyed.

Russia, Chechnya Russian Orthodox Christians, Muslims. The Russian army attacked the breakaway region. Many atrocities have been alleged on both sides. According to the Voice of the Martyrs: "In January 2002 Chechen rebels included all Christians on their list of official enemies, vowing to 'blow up every church and mission-related facility in Russia'." Wasn't here where the Mulsims killed all of those children (300 plus) in the school?...or was that part of the old Soviet Union. Either way, mulsims were the source of the killings of CHILDREN!!

South Africa Animists & "Witches" Hundreds of persons, suspected and accused of witches practising black magic, are murdered each year.
Sri Lanka Buddhists & Hindus Tamils (a mainly Hindu 18% minority) are involved in a war for independence since 1983 with the rest of the country (70% Buddhist). An estimated 65,000 have been killed. The second non-Mulsim conflict I could find!

Sudan Animists, Christians & Muslims Complex ethnic, racial, religious conflict which victimizes both Animists and Christians in the South of the country. Slavery and near slavery practiced. There are allegations of genocide.

Tibet Buddhists & Communists Country was annexed by Chinese Communists in late 1950's. Brutal suppression of Buddhism continues. * Number 3 conflict not involving Muslims...as of yet!

Uganda Animists, Christians, & Muslims Christian rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army are conducting a civil war in the north of Uganda. Their goal is a Christian theocracy whose laws are based on the Ten Commandments. They abduct about 2,000 children a year who are enslaved and/or raped.

So there you have it...the world at war and look who is mainly envloved...Would you please LOOK! See what happens when you follow the Koran. The religion of peace...I don't think so!

    Actions people...actions...not lip service!!

Maybe there are more Muslims involed in more conficts around the globe because there simply are more Muslims than any other religion. Many of the conflicts listed are not actual wars but ethnic conficts that have been going on for centuries. And who says Muslims started them in the first place. The beginnings of some of these conflicts go back so far that the people involved probably don't remember why they are fighting. I think blaming ONE religion for all the current and historical conflicts is a little too simple and convienent and clouds our ability to find solutions to todays problems.

How does listing all of the current world conflicts mean we hate everyone? The US only started to fight against islamic terrorists AFTER 9/11/2005. Before that, we tried to "understand" them and "feel their pain".

I am not going to hide behind bible thumpers because I DO want these animals destoyed. I can't for the life of me turn the other cheek so let it be "an eye for an eye". Just like a sick dog that turns on people, you don't want to destroy the animal, but sometimes you have to!

Hasn't the world had enough of these animals? I have!! No I will not turn my cheek so let me be damned too!

Oh, come on. :) I have some very good friends in your country, and go to the US at least once a year. Most people I know do not have such extreme views when it comes to the world beyond the US. They may well like their corner of the world better than others - but that is certainly not unique to Americans.

Over here in Germany (and also in France or the Netherlands for example) living with Muslims, and I emphasize the word "with", is not always easy. In most cases they are immigrants (DE: primarily from Turkey, NL: from SE Asia and NW Africa, FR: North Africa) and not well integrated. Instead of a multicultural society that some or many dreamed of until a few years ago, we have two or more parallel societies. This had led to mutual mistrust, and many Turks here in DE now apparently live a life that is focused on Turkish and Islamic traditions more than before. But still the overwhelming majority of these people is not in any way criminal.

And of course various Muslim organizations here have stated that they condemn terrorism. Problem is, we have almost 4 million Muslims in Germany (about 5 percent of the population, while one third is Roman Catholics and one third is Lutherans). However, only a relatively small part of the Muslims are members of, or represented by, one of the Islamic councils/organizations. So whatever one of the latter says will not necessarily represent the views of all others ...

    Chrisld,

These are most certainly not the views of anyone I know except a couple of folks here. Some of the views expressed here make me feel embarrassed to be an American. But then I remember that America is a culture of individualism and we believe that anyone has the right to say anything they want to say. Whether we agree or disagree with what they say, we defend their right to say it. It forces you to hear a lot of things you don't want to hear but serves the greater purpose of freedom of speech. So I'll listen to some pretty wacky points of view and think about the fact that I live in a place where fear of vocalizing ones ideas is not going to get me jailed or killed.

Intolerance and hatred go hand in hand with ignorance. You can't stereotype any group without losing crediblity. No blanket condemnation is ever true about any society, race or religion. None of these facts stop some folks from indulging in the practice of discrimination anyway. All you can do is to not buy into it and let them chatter away. It's just insecurity and fear talking and we all have those emotions in common.

Bull - the US has been fighting terrorism, albeit more passively that in 2001-present, for a long time now. You just never hear about it because of the percieved stereotype that all Muslims are evil, which is in and of itself stupid.

FINE - THEN DESTROY THE REAL CAUSE OF CONFLICT AMONG AMERICANS - THE ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS, NOT ALL MUSLIMS. If you think all Muslim people are bad and ought to be destroyed, then you are just plain ignorant and dumb. I have Muslim friends - does that mean I consort with terrorists when I play poker with them? ABSOLUTELY NOT. You are not giving (or understanding) the whole picture here, and you are being religiously RACIST in this matter.

    Then damn you, Midas.

Ok, Moen up to now I thought you were attempting to have a logical discussion but to say that the media has close ties to Israel when they ignore showing Israel babies being shot by muslim snipers but go crazy when the Israelies defend themselves.

When they won't tell you that the beheadings of westerners are actually a very slow and painful process and they are the most popular films sold in the arab nations but they go crazy if a rumor that a koran was not handled with gloves by a Christian soldier when handing it over to a terrorist prisoner.
    Give me a break.

Besides what do you think the arabs do with the billions upon billions of dollars in profit they make a month. Didn't you ever hear of the expression "petro dollars". They buy into as many things they can to gain access to power over control. It's easy if you own a lot of shares in a multi-media group you do not have to be an editor of a newspaper but you can dictate thru your hired underlings what type of editing/spin you want.

Has the people who have been defending Islam yet read the Koran and I really wish that these defenders of Islam go to an Islamic nation and see how long they last wearing an open cross around their neck and carrying a bible in their hands.

By the way, The Saudi government will "legally" kill a person who attempts to "smuggle" in bibles. If you don't believe me look up our own governments advisory warnings on travel there.

Great!! We agree on something" "Destroy the islamic extremists". I am all for that but mulsims themselves must take the first step in controlling their own. Just like a rabbid dog that needs to be destroyed, not all dogs are bad...just the sick ones who follow islamic jihad. If I see somebody killing a person on the street, I will turn them in. I don't praise allah when a fellow American breaks civilized law.

At least I have guts to print what many people think. I bet if you take a confidential poll and ask what to do with places like Fallujah and other "whacked" areas, Most Americans would say, "Flatten it!" I am honest about it and not afraid to speak my mind.

Damned I may be, but if they want jihad, then "let's roll mohammad" My first impressions of these "sick dogs" go back to the 1972 Olympics. After that I can provide you with enough suicide bombings, hijackings, and beheadings to fill a book...all in the name of allah! 9/11 was the last straw for me so now I support bringing the fight to them first, before they hit us again.

To sit back and try to understand them is insane...because they will attack us again and I am not about to wait, wish and hope.

I wasn't saying that Israel itself had control of our media. I guess I was trying not to offend any Jewish folks out there so I was sort asking you to read between the lines. It's not really a matter of what the media shows or doesn't show on the nightly news, it's more the slant and bias that all the networks participate in that even the major news anchors likened to tabloid journalism.

You don't see bodies of any kind on the news, dead U.S. soldiers coffins, hurricane victims, nothing. You know why? Because you've been told that you don't want to see it. In some cases, for some people, I'm sure it's true. People don't want to be faced with the grim reality of foreign wars, local disasters, or anything unpleasant.

In other countries, they aren't spared these sites and have a much clearer picture of what is really happening in the world. Forming opinions with only half the facts makes the process of spinning and slanting the news we get that much easier. That's why George Bush and his administration can keep saying everything in Iraq is getting better and better despite the thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of disabled. And the media is complicit in this hoax.

As far as Israelis and Muslims go, there is no shortage of zealots on either side. Tolerance is in short supply if it exists at all, and the voices of reason are drowned out by the screams of hatred. Look where it's gotten them so far.

Well, the media also has the fact that the federal government won't give them money if they show such graphic things on television. I remember something about a news helicopter in California (I think) that was on the air live filming a standoff on a bridge between police and a suicidal man. The man shot himself on live TV and there was a lawsuit that followed because somebody didn't like the graphic nature of it being watched by their children on the evening news.... So FCC regulations now won't allow anything like that to be shown where a younger audience can reach it.

So, I don't exactly think they're ignoring the footage, it's just that they'll get in trouble if they show it.

Here is something to think about:
How Is Religion Used by Terrorists to Produce Suicide Bombers?"

How's that again? Religion used to produce suicide bombers? Where are the Christian, Jewish, Hindu and Buddhist suicide bombers? In the entire world today, there is only one religion producing suicide bombers, and using core beliefs of the religion to recruit and motivate such bombers.

    Hint: it ain't Methodism.

Well, I apologize for being rude to you earlier, but you are making your comments seem like you are against all Muslims, which I cannot stand for - respect me for it or don't, that's my position - and that is why I have become agitated in talking of this: no one seems to care about respecting the individuals who are not terrorists. Just as not all Christians kill Protestants, and not all Chinese hate Koreans, nor do all Muslims wish to kill Americans. I only wish the other commentors in this forum would respect that.

Secondly, it is actually remarkable just how similar the teachings of the Qur'an are to the teachings of the Bible.Without going into really long and dull details, in the Bible, the two brothers Isaac and Ishmael were akin to the Jews (and subsequently, the Christians) and the Muslims. Both texts specifically believe in Jesus Christ - Christians as the son of God, and Muslims, as a holy prophet - and both have similar teachings of respect, such as can be found in the Ten Commandments and the "Golden Rule," and both also preach peace. However, just as the Bible says that God shall strike down the wicked, so have some extremely strict interpretationalists taken this passage in the Qur'an to mean that THEY should strike down the wicked in the name of Allah (God). They're wrong, and this is where we get extremism.

Of course I don't ever want to see another 9/11 happen to the United States - no one here does. And I support the war on terrorism in order to capture, or kill known terrorists, like Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein and their networks of terror. But I do not, and will not ever support the mass genocide of killing Muslims because of their faith in what is essentially the Arab Bible.

I do hope that by "them" you refer to extremists like Bin Laden, because I can understand my Muslim friends just fine. And I also agree that TERRORISTS will strike again, and so, as I said above, I do support finding KNOWN TERRORISTS and capturing/killing them if the need to kill arises. But if we go on a killing spree and start just sporadically killing off entire Muslim populations, we are then no better than the Hutus killing the Tutsies in Rwanda, the Nazis killing the Jews, or the Russians and Chechnyans.

All I'm asking is that you give credit where credit is due - to extremists specifically, not all Muslims.

Edited to post the news story:
Dan - here's a copy of the story I was talking about. After this happened, so many people (especially mothers with children) responded angrily to this that the FCC now uses a time delay to enable censors to disallow footage to be shown on television. I think the delay is like 20 or 30 seconds, but I'm not really sure what the length of time actually is.
