Why are terms like 'Redneck', 'Hillbilly', 'White Trash' and 'Hick' so accepted these days. I read news stories or posts on forums about politics and invariably come across slurs like these. Most often about Palin or republican supporters.

I think I have seen one or two of those terms used here on a couple of occasions but certainly not like I see it elsewhere.

Because now like the N word, the people the terms describe have adopted them as a moniker of pride. Right or wrong, look at all the pickup trucks with "Redneck" etc on them driving about.

Maybe but I can just about guarantee a search of the 'N' word or similar on this or most any other moderated forum or news comment section would return about zero results. At least when used at someone or a group of people.

Oh sure, you might see a slur like that or similar talked about in a thread such as this where you are talking about slurs in general but you aren't going to see someone call someone else that or even call a group of other people that kind of term and not have it moderated. Whereas I see Redneck and such used a lot these days directed at people and groups on discussions on the internet.

Sarah Palin supporters are just a bunch of dumb R-D N---S.

Barack Obama supporters are just a bunch of dumb N-----S.

Bill Richardson supporters are just a bunch of dumb W-T B---S.

Which of those would cause an uproar?

The latter two would cause the uproar of course. It is all in the interpretation though. Now Jesse Jackson can refer to Obama as a n-----, but Sarah Palin cannot. I am sure at sometime the term Redneck will devolve into a negative again.

I can pretty much guarantee that if somebody called someone a Redneck around where I live, there would be a pretty negative impact to the somebody doing the calling. lol

There are rednecks everywhere. And they seem to be multipyling. But its true; there seems to be a more pride among, shall we say less educated, no, less cultured Americans. I mean NASCAR!!??? C'mon. White lightning is sold at the supermarket now. Its the down home bull that policticians have been using to get thier illiterate votes. Crap like, ''Youre the REAL America!''. ''Its samll towns like you that keep this country strong.''. So now they all think that they are important. Or at least worthy of recognition. Stupid rubes.

Now try that kind of post with a different group using some of the terms alluded to above (or even an Aidenesque parity in that vain). The humor would go over like a led zeppelin. ;)

down my way, redneck is a good thing, they are proud of being a redneck and if you called them redneck they would say 'DAMN STRAIGHT'...

Obama has made statements such as ..."typical white person" & "white greed". Substitute any race or religion for "white" and see what happens!!

...and Obama's books...and his speeches...and his interviews...and his answers at debates...
So in your world, there is a statute of limitations on what people say? I know you lefty radicals wish his words would go away but obviously they won't.

Calling me a lefty radical? such a transparent tactic...Is that how you approch everything? did you know it was so transparent when you wrote it? Or was it a deliberate attempt to strike out because you had nothing better to say? just wondering.

I would wear it if it fits...just calling me a lefty radical doesnt make me one...sorry. So I guess you are saying you meant to use a transparent dishonest tactic...No shocker coming from a guy who says one thing and then goes to a McCain rally...;)
