"The arrests mark the latest in a series of alleged homegrown Islamic terrorism plots targeting high-profile American landmarks.

A year ago, seven Muslim men were arrested in what officials called the early stages of a plot to blow up the Sears Tower in Chicago and destroy FBI offices and other buildings.

A month later, authorities broke up a plot to bomb underwater New York City train tunnels to flood lower Manhattan.

And six people were arrested a month ago in an alleged plot to unleash a bloody rampage on Fort Dix in New Jersey."

(CBS) NEW YORK - Three men were arrested and one was being sought in connection to a plan to set off explosives in a fuel line that feeds John F. Kennedy International Airport and runs through residential neighborhoods, according to an indictment released Saturday.

U.S. Attorney Roslynn R. Mauskopf called it "one of the most chilling plots imaginable." "We will use every lawful method available to us to make sure the public is safe."

"The devastation that would be caused had this plot succeeded is just unthinkable," she said at a news conference.

This is just another consequence of continuous world-wide foreign interventionism. Funny how this kind of stuff never happened in the days when the US followed the long-standing traditional American foreign policy of staying out of foreign countries and foreign conflicts unless/until attacked. When will this lesson be learned/relearned?

 

Never, because it is simply not the case cloud. The jihad of the muslim extremist is real, and regardless of what we do they will continue to press with their agenda of terror. I notice you neither condemn them but say it is a result of OUR actions. Each one responsible for his own actions, that is how life works.

But I think it's completely blind to think that we can occupy islamic holylands, bomb Iraq about three time a week for a decade, take sides in the Israeli/Arab conflict, impose economic sanctions on Iran and Iraq, become mixed up in Lebananese politics, threaten Syria, and then be completely surprised and horrified when someone in the region, from the region, or who supports the region to take a swing at us. Now, there are those in our government who would have us believe that had we done none of this, we still would have been attacked. Now, we are stuck with this enemy of our own creation and our government tells us that we must fight them for generations, perhaps perpetually, for some vague reasons that alternate between pride in not "losing" [whatever that means or is worth], fear that they will follow us here [a strawman proposal], spreading "democracy" by force, preventing the Iraqis from killing each other [which they want to do and will do eventually anyway despite anything we do], or whatever other soundbites work well in focus groups.

Starting from where we stand with the mistakes behind us [we can't change the past], the US has only three national interests in the region. First, to buy oil. Second, to prevent the nuclear weapons in Pakistan from falling into terrorist hands the day after the inevitable coup. Third, kill Osama, declare victory, and leave while maintaining an armed vigilence against further retaliation, which may never come if we leave. Our current policy accomplishes the first in the most expensive way imaginable, and does nothing to accomplish two and three.

 

Many of the same people, and you seem to be one of them, cry 'No blood for oil' but also want higher gas-mileage standards for cars. But higher mileage standards have meant lighter and flimsier cars, leading to more injuries and deaths in accidents — in other words, trading blood for oil.

 

This is the same scenario over and over. The FBI is watching some group that has been inspired to commit some act of violence by watching some internet Islamist website and has niether the expertise nor the funding to carry out some horrific sounding plot but the story is sensationalized on the nightly news that inevitably makes the disclaimer that no act was even close to being pulled off. Yet it is frontpage news just the same. People like Midas stay convinced that we are continually under attack and that we should be running around yelling at the top of our lungs. Keep the fear level high and the population in line and you can do anything you want politically.
I may not be stupid enough to fall for the media/administration scare tactics but it is interesting how many scared little rabbits do. The weak minded are more susceptible to this type of manipulation and try to convince the rest of us to see their concerns as they do but when their ideas are met with skepticism they turn to the only tactic that will make them feel as if they have some control over their weak pathetic lives. They attack those of us that refuse to yield to fear because if they see us as strong, they can only interpret themselves as weak. They have to attack us to preserve the illusion of their own cajones which is so out of reach by this point that the whole act is utter futility.

You are correct that I think there is a fundamental moral difference between deliberate killing and accidents that goes beyond body counts. Regardless, the last insurance industry statistics I saw indicated that a person is 40% more likely to die driving an SUV per mile driven than in a traditional passenger car. But I agree with your point that overpowered and underweight cars probably lead to more deaths than necessary also. I drive to work on the interstate every day, and the average speed is probably 8-10 MPH faster than it was 15 years ago and enforcement of posted speed limits no longer exists. None of this is going to matter because world oil production apparently peaked in 2005, was down in 2006 and will be down again in 2007. Google "peak oil" for more information. The price of gasoline is going to continue to increase in an irregular manner, without limit, until vehicles such as the SUV cease to exist for economic reasons, regardless of anyone's political views on the subject or safety concerns.

Successfully thwarting a proposed attack should be highlighted in the media as it will play on the nerves of other possible bombers, if it is made quite clear that information came to light from 'Sources within the Muslim Community' Psy Ops can be a very effective weapon. You take away the belief that they have total support from there co religonists, that they are operating in a vacume & disafection will set in.
