Wrong - the Politburo wanted Khrushchev out of power, any basic understanding of this period of Soviet history notes that the apparatchikis in the Politburo were pulling the strings by the time Khrushchev was taken out. Brezhnev was nothing more than a puppet that was controlled from behind, much like Dmitry Medvedev is a puppet that Vlad the Impaler pulls around and makes squawk when he has to. Brezhnev was one of the most ineffective people ever to be Chairman of the Supreme Soviet and President of the USSR.

It was a face saving side show for the Soviets, the main impetus for putting their ICBM's in Cuba was Cuba's fear of a yanqui invasion and the Soviets willingness to ameliorate the situation by placing their missiles in Cuba - at Castro's request. Castro is largely forgotten in the context of this whole conflict, but at that time he seriously feared a yanqui invasion, and had reason to. Bay of Pigs was just the previous year.

The US Navy is alleged to have dropped depth charges on a USSR submarine, that was on orders to attack with nuclear tipped missiles if it's hull was breached. However, the depth charges allegedly caused no damages and the situation never escalated.

Actually the submarine warfare part of the Cold War conflict is a whole other fascinating issue of itself - there were many many "incidents" and still nearly 20 years after the Cold War ended - allegations of submarines sunk etc. from both sides. If such incidents actually did occur, there is not enough evidence beyond questionable accounts and conjecture as BOTH governments covered up such matters.

As an aside, read up on "Project Jennifer" sometime - inasmuch information as you can find anyway. The real truth is still buried, and kept from the public. And that is about all I will say about that particular project

Sorry but I just happen to give a great deal of credit for NOT HAVING A SUCCESSFUL ATTACK IN THIS COUNTRY since 9/11 to George Bush & our military. Have you ever considered that what our troops do over there actually helps & aides in the security we experiece here? You know, I used to travel a lot for business (I was actually stranded due to 9/11) and we didn't feel safe flying for a while after 9/11. Now I don't even give that part of it any consideration...just jump on the plane & take off.

Well I sugest David that you check out the LA airport attack that happend after 9/11 before making such sweeping statements. And as for just jumping on a plane and taking off, why dont you try it LOL You say you were stranded due to the attack well I was in the air at the time on the last flight to be allowed to land at Stanstead airport.
Now you ask if I know what our troops do over there well yes I do actualy been a Ex soldier myself and having a very good pal who might soon be getting invalided out of the Parachute Regiment due to a roadside bomb (Afghanistan), what about you David ever serve in the forces? Do you have any idea as to what they are doing over there or is it just talk as usual.
