5 Dead in Mumbai Chabad House Terror Attack

    by Hana Levi Julian

(IsraelNN.com) After more than 40 hours and a day-long siege by Indian commandos against Islamist terrorists holed up in the Mumbai Chabad House, the operation ended with the discovery that five of the Jewish hostages had been murdered by their captors, including Chabad-Lubavitch emissary, Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka.

Foreign Ministry sources told Israel National News just minutes before the start of the Sabbath in Israel that the victims also included two women who had been trapped on the top floor with the Holtzbergs, as well as a fifth unnamed person.

Indian television had reported jubilantly an hour earlier that the siege of the Nariman Chabad House in Mumbai was over, and that all the terrorists were killed -- but suddenly, in a dramatic reversal, announced that authorities ordered the wildly cheering crowd to move back: it wasn't really over after all.

Government commandos had begun to exit the badly damaged building smiling broadly and flashing the "thumbs up" sign at the applauding crowd in the street, with one commander telling the media that the fierce fire fight was finished, with three terrorists dead. A loud explosion, probably from a grenade or rocket launcher, had been heard moments earlier on the top floor of the five-story building, which was badly damaged.

    Remembering Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg

    November 28, 2008

    FIRST PERSON

    By Benjamin Holtzman

Just minutes ago I heard the terrible news that five Israeli hostages were found dead inside the Chabad center at Nariman house in Mumbai. Although the media hasn’t officially confirmed their identities yet, it seems quite certain that they are Chabad Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, his wife Rivka, an Israeli couple and another Israeli.

After having been glued to the news for two days straight, relentlessly combing through twitter updates, news reports, and blogs, I am totally exhausted, yet feel compelled to write something about these great people I knew.

I lived in Mumbai for six months last year, and would go to the Beit Chabad with friends for a Shabbat meal about every second week. Over the course of six months, we got to know the rabbi and his wife quite well.

They were wonderful people: warm, inviting and engaging. Gabi would get visibly excited to have so many guests for Shabbat; you could tell it really made his week. He would have a grin on his face almost the entire meal, including during his dvar Torah. He was always so eager to create a communal feeling that he insisted everyone go around the table and say a few words to the group, giving guests four options: either delivering a dvar Torah, relating an inspirational story, declaring to take on a mitzvah or leading a song.

Shimon and Yehudit Rosenberg, the parents of Rivka Holtzberg, who is currently being held hostage at the Chabad center in Mumbai with her husband Gavriel, arrived in the Indian city early Friday morning with a delegation of the Zaka organization.

Rabbi Yitzhak David Grossman told Ynet that the two were reunited wit their two-year-old grandson, Moshe Tzvi, who was rescued from the house by his Indian nanny the day before.

Moshe Tzvi was supposed to celebrate his second birthday today, but the family decided to postpone the celebration because of the difficult events, and the grandparents are hoping that they would be able to mark the occasion with the parents.

What happened in India really sucks on many levels. It may bring India into conflict with Pakistan. That is geopolitical stuff, the personal stuff that you relate is just heartbreaking.

The first reports coming out stated that only American and British passport holders were being targeted for attacks. The dimension of attacking Jewish people added a new dimension to the attacks in that the direction of the attackers can now be more easily determined to be Al Qaeda and their backers in Pakistan.

If anything India is negligent in handling terrorists matters in it's own country. The fact that some of the attackers are apparently still holed up is very disturbing.

The annointing of Obama has emboldened these terrorists so expect to see more attacks in the future.

Thank God George Bush and our military have kept us safe here at home since 9/11.

Just how low can you get? blaming Obama for this Outrage he is not even in power yet Bush is. They have had over a thousand attacks in India over the past year or so, is he to blame for them as well?
Ruben my deepest sympathies go out to you and the Jewish community and also to the families of the other 190+ killed in this attack.
You want to lay blame then lay it quite possibly at Bin Laden door, who is still tucked up safely in Afghanistan/Pakistan, or those in Pakistan for the lack of seriouse action against these people.

1000 attacks of this magnitude? Security officials all over the world are issuing warnings that terror strikes will increase with Obama and his liberal cohorts in control of our security.

We have one amongst us with his cranial region safely residing in his posterior apparently.

Terrorists are after the American system of values, our democracy and our freedom of politic. It doesn't matter who is president, or who controls the congress. They do not like our freedom of religion, of our being able to freely elect our government etc. They do not discern liberal from conservative etc. Liberals and conservatives in the American political scene are all enemies of Al Qaeda.

As much as you would like to believe this to be true, you are wrong. Obama's weakness is apparent to our enemies and they are working their way back up gradually. It's only a matter of time (sometime after 1/20/09 I would imagine) before they try to strike at us again. I think you are blinded by your perceievd infallability of your savior.

Not a single word to pay respect for those who died just more attacks on someone who is not even in power yet!! Did President Bush stop the Bali bombing, or how about the London Bombings or the Madrid bombing, how about all the suicide attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan?? or for that matter the attack on the twin towers. No of course he did not he can no more controll what they do than Obama can but you are so blinded by your hatred of the man you can not see that.

  13. David

Hatred? Absolutely not. Skeptical? YES. Incredulous? YES. Hatred? No.

As to your other naivity, after 9/11 there were no other successful attacks on our soil even though many were promised and many were planned. Your problem, D'ork, is that you can't see past what has just happened. Do you understand the concept of being proactive?

Nor can you see your own hatred it pours out of you post after post. You have blamed the man for everything from the collapse of the world economy to this! and by the way this attack was not on American soil either so that must be because Obama is so successful, after all if it is his fault when things go wrong in the world it must be to his credit when things go right. Oh and its De Orc just in case you cant read.

Just pointing out the facts- whether you are willing to admit it or not.

The radical left was so consumed with Bush hatred that you were willing to sacrifice our country & appoint a novice to the highest office in the world.
