Yeah. If my memory of what I've read serves me correctly, I think the whole plot to kidnap the pope only came about when he eventually went back on his deal with the nazis.

OK the Pope was born in 1927 so by the time the nazi's came to power in 1933 was 6 years old he was educated like every other German child within the German state school system, he would have been automaticly expected to join the HJ this does not make him a Nazi, Bormans son is a preacher these days did you know that?
Have you any idea of just how many Catholic priests were tortuerd & sent to the Death camps by the Nazi's for been outspoken opponents of the regiem? The Germans had no need to smuggle anything to Mussolinie's Regiem they borderd each other.
Yes certain church men did help fleeing Nazi's to escape justice but there again so did the American, British, & French Goverments. The main priest involved had very close links to the Ustachi in Croatia, it was called the Ratline.

Now on to the Vatican & its concordat with Hitler
The Reichskonkordat was ratified on 10 September 1933. In the Concordat, the German government achieved a complete proscription of all clerical interference in the political field (articles 16 and 32). It also ensured the bishops' loyalty to the state by an oath and required all priests to be Germans and subject to German superiors. Restrictions were also placed on the Catholic organisations.

Shortly before signing the Reichskonkordat, Germany signed similar agreements with the major Protestant churches in Germany.

Terms and violations
The main points of the concordat are

The right to freedom of the Roman Catholic religion. (Article 1)
The state concordats with Bavaria (1924), Prussia (1929), and Baden (1932) remain valid. (Article 2)
Unhindered correspondence between the Holy See and German Catholics. (Article 4)
The right of the church to collect church taxes. (Article 13)
The oath of allegiance of the bishops: "(...) Ich schwöre und verspreche, die verfassungsmässig gebildete Regierung zu achten und von meinem Klerus achten zu lassen (...)" ("I swear and vow to honor the constitutional government and to make my clergy honor it") (Article 16)
State services to the church can be abolished only in mutual agreement. (Article 18)

Protection of Catholic organizations and freedom of religious practice. (Article 31)
Clerics may not be members of or be active for political parties. (Article 32)
A secret annex relieved clerics from military duty in the case that mandatory military service should be reinstated. (Germany was not allowed to have mandatory military service by the Treaty of Versailles).

When the Nazi government violated the concordat (in particular article 31), bishops and the papacy protested against these violations. Protests culminated in the papal encyclical "Mit brennender Sorge" ("With Burning Concern") of 1937 of Pope Pius XI.

So please not just the Catholic Church.

I am a Roman Catholic and I believe Aidan has a couple of screws loose regarding his hatred for my Church. But I don't think this is enough reason to censor what he says. Extreme threats and personal attacks against other forum members can be censored, but all comments directed toward public figures, organizations, and issues probably should be acceptable topics for discussion as long as it is applied evenhandedly. I don't think Aidan is winning any converts to his point of view with the bizzare comments anyway.

 

If PRWE is becoming more liberal then it would be by definition less civil.

Sounds pretty civil to me. And actually, the more liberal voices here are easily the more civil participants on average anyway. Conservative voices seem to harbor most of the intolerance just like in real life. You know, they hate gays, immigrants, Muslims, Liberals especially. It is the intolerance that leads to the lack of civility.

 

I have no problem at all with Aidan voicing his opinion on the Chruch or anything else - it is merely the manner in which he chooses to do so that bothers me. To be more specific, it is the particular words he chooses to use. He can say exactly the same thing in a more civilized manner and no one will ever censor a word. As a matter of fact, I would personally fight for his right to do so; just as I would for anyone else.

 

Aidan, I rest my case and rely on the juror for the decision. I had to turn around and look at my jury sticker on the ice box to spell it. English is such a complicated language!
