Gosh...I haven't had this argument since this occured back in, what was it...2003? I remember the writings very well. So, let's review:

McNabb, Limbaugh said, is "overrated ... what we have here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback can do well—black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well."

"There's a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

I am a huge football fan and let's take the football stuff first. For the past four seasons leading up to Limbaugh's observation, the Eagles have had one of the best defenses in the NFL and at the time failed to make it to the Super Bowl primarily because of an ineffective offense—an offense run by Donovan McNabb. Remember...they were called the "Junior Varsity Buffalo Bills".

Now...McNabb was a great college quarterback and one of the best of the '90s while he was at Syracuse (Go Orangeman). He is one of the most talented athletes in the NFL, but that talent has not translated into greatness as a pro quarterback.

McNabb has started for the Eagles since the 2000 season. In that time leading up to this comment, the Eagles offense has never ranked higher than 10th in the league in yards gained. In fact, their 10th-place rank in 2002 was easily their best; in their two previous seasons, they were 17th in a 32-team league. They rank 31st so far in 2003.

In contrast, the Eagles defense in those four seasons has never ranked lower than 10th in yards allowed. In 2001, they were seventh; in 2002 they were fourth; the year Limbaugh made his comment, they're fifth. It shouldn't take a football Einstein to see that the Eagles' strength over these past few seasons has been on defense, and Limbaugh made this observation because the numebrs were pretty clear.

The news that the Eagles defense has "carried" them over this period should be neither surprising nor controversial to anyone with access to simple NFL statistics—or for that matter, with access to a television. Yet, McNabb has received an overwhelming share of media attention and thus the credit.

    Now why is this?

Let's look at a QB with similar numbers at this time who played for a team with a great defense. Now...even in Tampa, I don't know anyone who would call Brad Johnson one of the best quarterbacks in pro football—which is how McNabb is often referred to. In fact, I don't know anyone who would call Brad Johnson, on the evidence of his NFL career, much more than mediocre. Yet, Johnson's NFL career passer rating, as of this time was 7.3 points higher than McNabb's (84.8 to 77.5), he has completed his passes at a higher rate (61.8 percent to 56.4 percent), and has averaged significantly more yards per pass (6.84 to 5.91). I will give your this...McNabb exceled in just one area over Johnson: running, where he has gained 2,040 yards and scored 14 touchdowns to Johnson's 467 and seven. But McNabb was sacked more frequently than Johnson—more than once, on average, per game, which negates much of the rushing advantage.

In other words, in just about every way, Brad Johnson has been a more effective quarterback than McNabb and over a longer period.

And even if you say the stats don't matter and that a quarterback's job is to win games, Johnson comes out ahead. Johnson has something McNabb doesn't, a Super Bowl ring, which he went on to win after his Bucs trounced McNabb's Eagles in the NFC championship game by a score of 27-10. The Bucs and Eagles were regarded by everyone as having the two best defenses in the NFL last year. When they played in the championship game, the difference was that the Bucs defense completely bottled up McNabb while the Eagles defense couldn't stop Johnson.

In terms of performance, many NFL quarterbacks should be ranked ahead of McNabb. But McNabb has represented something "special" to all of us since he started his first game in the NFL, and we all know what that is.

Limbaugh is being excoriated for making race an issue in the NFL. This is hypocrisy. I don't know of anybody who didn't regard the dearth of black NFL quarterbacks as one of the most important issues in the late '80s and early '90s. Let's go back fruther...The topic really caught fire after 1988, when Doug Williams of the Washington Redskins became the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. I even remember one of those questions asked of him: "How long have you been a balck quarterback?"

AS far as I can tell, no black quarterback has been able to dominate a league in which the majority of the players are black. To pretend that many of us didn't want McNabb to be the best quarterback in the NFL because he's black is absurd. To say that we shouldn't root for a quarterback to win because he's black is every bit as nonsensical as to say that we shouldn't have rooted for Jackie Robinson to succeed because he was black. (Oh please, I don't need to be reminded that McNabb's situation is not so difficult or important as Robinson's—I'm talking about a principle.)

Consequently, it is equally absurd to say that the sports media haven't overrated Donovan McNabb because he's black. I'm sorry to have to say it; he is an average quarterback for a NFL team. Instead of calling him overrated, I bet Eagels fans wish they could be admiring his Super Bowl rings. But the truth is that I bet many sportswriters have chosen for the past few years to see McNabb as a better player than he has been because we want him to be.

Fact: Rush Limbaugh didn't say McNabb was a bad quarterback because he is black. He said that the media have overrated McNabb because he is black, and Limbaugh is right. He didn't say anything that he shouldn't have said, and in fact he said things that other commentators should have been saying for some time now.

If that is all you have in 20 plus years in broadcasting, then I will let ACTIONS and WORDS speak for themselves...somethng you can't comprehend. :p

The fact that he sees him as a "black quarterback" instead of some other descriptor makes the point. I'm from Philly and I'm all over the Eagles. We had Randall Cunningham before him, McMahon, all the way back to Jaworski I was an avid follower of the Eagles..still am. I doubt there's much you can tell me about the Eagles that I don't alreadt know or at least have heard. Nobody in Philly, or anywhere else for that matter, felt the need to point out that he was black. They came up with every other theory/excuse about how bad he was when they lost..never was "his blackness" a topic of discussion as to why. Only one of the right's esteemed leaders has that distinction, and I guess as well...you.

I am from the Philadelphia area as well. Why do you think McNabb can't win the big one? I have my theory, but I want to hear yours first.

BTW, that was not the point of Limbaugh's rant. He claimed that the media over-hyped him because he was black. He never said he couldn't win because he was black. Midas's point is that if McNabb were not black he would suffer the anonymity of mediocrity along with white quarterbacks like Brad Johnson. Personally, I would take Brad Johnson in his prime over many many quarterbacks.

McNabb is basically a choker. He can't handle the pressure of the "big one" and chokes. He has flashes of brilliance, but can't consistently get it done. He throws into the ground often and can be terribly inaccurate. I think when he toned down the running around, he became a lot more predictable. When he first got hurt and then came back, I think he canned the running stuff trying to be a pocket quarterback, and got hit once too often. He fell down, choked in the SuperBowl. He just never developed to the next level, like say a Joe Montana, Elway, or whomever. He could have and he should have, but he didn't. Plus he's a bit spoiled. Saying all that...I think he's a good quarterback, intermittently great, but not up to the next level. Cunningham was sorta the same way, ran like hell all over the place, confused defenses, then got hurt and then...no more of that. I'd say Donovan has a lot more class however. I like him a lot but he can't get it done.
Limp has no business making that sort of comment. To me....it shows his racism. That's also the reason his getting into NFL ownership caused such a stir-because he projects a racist attitude...because, well, he's a racist. I say again..I think we all are to a point...black, white or purple. That's life in the big city. Blubberbelly is in a position though where he needs to keep his mouth shut sometimes, but that's not what he does...he's famous for running his mouth and ordering drugs from his servant...I mean maid. He should certainly know better but of course, but he can't do that of course, because he's Rush the DittoDork, and he wouldn't have gotten very far if he hadn't run his mouth like the Redneck idol that he is. Surprised he doesn't also condone "stringin' em up".

I don't think McNabb is a choker, but he does lack the intangible asset that every great athlete possesses. He just doesn't have a killer instinct. I don't mind that he likes to have fun when he plays. I don't even mind that he smiles on the field during a game. But when I see him smile and joke with members of the opposing team after the Eagles lose a game, I know that he doesn't have it. Winners absolutely hate losing. The loss eats them alive until they have the another chance to win. McNabb's skills are great and he has shown the ability to be a leader to his team, but without that killer instinct, I fear he will never win the big one.

I have no inclination to defend Rush but I don't think his statement about McNabb was racist. He decided to comment on an arena that was not in his area of expertise and he stuck his foot in his mouth. I actually understand his thinking but there is no way he didn't know that saying something that politically incorrect wasn't going to be crucified by the media. I think he did it on purpose just to get attention.

Rush is an idiot. But, I am not so sure saying the NFL has a little social concern and wanted a black QB to succeed is racist. The NFL is a very image conscious league and QB has been a historically discriminated against position in the league.

This is the same league that has the 'Rooney Rule', after all...which maybe has helped but seems stupid on the face of it. Oh...and that rule was implemented earlier the same year Rush apparently made the quote.

And I remember the big media hype when Lovie and Dungy both took teams to the Superbowl and it was guaranteed that a black coach would win it for the first time.

As far as McNaab, I have always liked the guy. He was good to me on a couple of Fantasy Teams. ;) As far as I have followed him, I really can;t say if he has been over-rated. I would say he's not the best QB there is but he is certainly better than a lot of them. And with a few exceptions (like Peyton Manning) a lot of QBs get more credit than they deserve.

As far as the laughing and joking...I'd take that over (my Bear's) Cutler's head down, pouting, loser body language any day.

It gets soooooooo boring listening to the typical liberal response when they are beaten. Name calling and yell racist. Have you nothing better than that?

Name calling and racism is your exit stragety........try to think of a new one , would you?

    Gawd it gets old

I wouldn't and I am a Bears fan. If you were Cutler you would be pouting too since your primary receiver is a converted cornerback, your second receiver is a rookie, and your other receivers would be lucky to be on special teams if they played for other teams in the league.

Don't worry, it is a blessing in disguise. It should be apparent to everyone that the Bears need to go get a premier receiver and a pass catching running back and quick.

All things being equal, I would love to see the passion displayed by Dan Marino out of either McNabb or Cutler.

Wow. I'd say a response similar to the typical republican responses like God, guns, and gays, and small business tax cuts. That and the typical Jimmy Carter bashing..I mean Bill Clinton bashing.... I mean the Obama bashing when THEY'RE beaten....like being thrown out of office?

I agree it gets very old...boring and typical. Some things just never change.
