    There's a photograph of a two- or three-thousand-year-old brick
    seat-toilet kicking around from Mohenjo-Daro, or maybe it was Harappa.

    The Indus Valley civilization, anyway.

    It had a constant water-flow under it linked to a municipal sewage-system,
    all constructed of bricks, with brick plates over the street-conduits.

    Not bad for folks who never learned how to write.

    Although I imagine the sewage was just poured into the river, which
    wouldn't be so good for the folks downstream, especially if there was, as
    was probably usual, an epidemic goin' around (cities = epidemics) . . . .
