I would call it abstaining from delusional ideas but hey , whatever floats your boat. Now to be fair I could always call any religion , a joke that went on for too long.

This response is to all the faithful who posted on this thread

Wow, it is interesting how a little reality freaks out you religious people.

I had a great childhood. No trauma's of any kind. Never lost my parents till my thirties. In high school I was always into sports and had many girlfriends over the years. I have been married for the past 15 years with great children. No pain or trauma has made me the way I am. EDUCATION made me who I am today. I am a scientist interested in the truth. So to all you terrified faithful, it seems to me that you are the product of pain and agony. You fear ghosts and demons. Why stop there... Vampires, Zombies, and Werewolves are coming to judge you on your deeds. I stopped being afraid of ghosts rather late in life I think I was 3 years old. I suppose creation science makes sense to you. You do understand that the burden of proof is not on Scientists but on Creationists to prove your point. Science has 1000's of peer reviewed pieces of evidence. You know EVIDENCE that stuff of reality not dreams. You are in the minority by any measure. Your time of great delusion is almost at an end, as all old dead religions of the past have experienced. EDUCATION is making people realize just how ridiculous religion is. Most educated people realize it is just a form of mind control over the unenlightened masses. If that makes me arrogant so be it. Better to be arrogant than having a belief system that is based on fairytales and personal madness.

Hmmm..curious....what does your "scientific" mind tell you about 911? You obviously know how to take things on faith if you believe that fable.

Wow! Another example of an athiest attacking faith! Why does the debate ALWAYS devolve into this with your side?
Wanna talk education? With a couple of advanced degrees, I'm as educated as anyone on this board and I am certainly a believer...never really had anything presented to me that would cause me to question my faith.
Wanna talk science? Bogus research is alive & well in the science world. You simply have an opinion & manufacture the evidence to make it support your argument, nothing new there.
I'm fascinated to know how, if not created, did everything form? Some coincidence that man & women just happen to be compatable for reproduction or that the eco-system operates in such a way to sustain life! That must have been some big explosion for all those trees to just pop up! And are we in a state of suspended animation currently? Not a lot of animals evolving into other life forms over the last, what, couple thousand years???

I think the infinity of the space is a simple and strong argument FOR God. All the countless stars, solar systems, and all life everywhere just went "boom" and there they were?! Without any intervention of any supreme entity?? Just a matter of coincidence that our earth formed with all of its' intricate forms of life and their complexities and on and on and on??? Because our child like egotistical minds can't comprehend it all, we're supposed to reject it all because it's not "scientific" enough for our great minds.
Scientists/technology can't even find the 'end' of space, much less the complexities of its' origins. We've only recently begun to understand "dark energy/black holes" (as an example). So because we can't explain it in a way that "we" can explain to "ourselves", then it couldnt have happened? How arrogant! (but typical)

You may wish to notice that the rest of the definition that you posted is only 'usually'. From this thread, it appears that the way the OP apparently practices Atheism smacks 100% of religion. In fact, I would call it a fundamentalist/extremist practice of religion.

C'mon now. How good of a scientist are you? Surely you can scientifically explain how structures, apparently encountering no rersistance, fall at the same rate of speed that a big rock dropped from the same height and reach the ground at the same time accomplish this feat. The rock's only resistance is air. One would think steel and concrete might offer a bit more resistance than air, wouldn't it? How's that work? Please enlighten me. I await your scientific wisdom.

awozny for a scientist you realy are making a number of unsubstanciated calls here, who mentioned living in terror of ghosts and demons? I for one would find science more frightening in many respects.
Again you started this discussion and I quote "This is a seriouse question"!!
Yet all you have done is mock? now is that truely scientific?

The particular sect of Atheism on display here seems to be a quite intolerant "system of human thought".

Doesnt it take longer than a few thousand years for life forms to evolve? Are you just going by recorded history? And there have certainly been alot of bogus religions. Doesnt science claim that Earth is billions of years old? With billions more to follow? Maybe it takes 100,000 years for life to evolve. Funny how one would question everything but thier faith. Hey if God created man his own image that is to say his own self and that person behaves in a way that includes , hmmm lets say murder and rape. Wouldnt that be how God wanted that person to behave? Seems to me that God is sort of a prick sometimes.

Perhaps God's perception of time and our own differ. Maybe our years constitute seconds in God's reality. Perhaps our world is but a primitive spec
in the big picture. Who knows. Certainly not I nor you. Far as God being sometimes being what you perceive him as, well..IMHO...some folks deserve what they get until they wake up and smell the coffee. God lets us choose our own paths.,not him. Freedom to choose. If you want to be an ass, then be an ass. Your choice. As for the folks that don't deserve to be treated that way or can't choose their cirumstances...you might want to consider the evil that is apparently inherent to a large part of this world. Maybe their circumstances were as a result of the choices that previous generations of evil made FOR them. Maybe the blame needs to be at their feet for the arrogant and selfish choices that were a result of the consequences of other's actions/choices that now impair others. (kind of like the arrogant elite of our society??) Who knows. I think simply that how we live on this earth determines our future evolution. We are only a small piece of a much bigger puzzle. What is it that Einstein said about man knowing less than one percent about anything?? I liken people's attitudes of saying that there being a God is impossible, to a small child saying he can't ride a bike. He says he can't because he doesn't yet know how, in the same way that man doesn't understand 99% of everything else.

It's called Free Will...it's one of God's gifts to us. The choices you make determine what kind of person you are. Think about it.

So then if there was no God there'd be no free will?

But one could be righteous and good without belief in God. And deserving of what they get seems like a cop out. An believer suffering from cancer is in as much pain as one who is an athiest. And then of course there is that. How is cancer a choice? What kind of sick masochist would slam some one with that? Or with MS or mental redardation? Who cooses those to live with? You can explain this and that with excerpts from the bible. But that doesnt excuse God of being an nasty S.O.B. when he wants. And Why?

Well I certainly can't answer why you would conclude that God is a nasty sob. I guess you base your opinion on the result of your life experiences. Perhaps you are blaming the wrong source..I do not know.
Far as your "sick masochist" view, I'll pose this. Suppose someone rapes, kills, tortures, or whatever similar horror, say a 3 year old child. They get away with it...never caught. They change. They go on to become productive members of society and have their own children someday. What would give them the right to have children of their own? I say (at minimum) that they surrendered that right when they CHOSE to take someone elses child. But they can do it anyway, because noone ever found out about their crime. How would that be fair to the parents of the child he killed? That's where God comes in. Cancer, or some handicap to future a generation that was a by-product of the killer perhaps? I say it's a possibility, but I surely don't know..I am speculating.
Maybe he has no guilt? Maybe the only way to show him the ills of his deed is to have a similar thing happen to them. I'm not saying God is purposefully vengeant, but, I say, if he doesn't keep score...who will? Who will serve justice? Anyway this is just one scenario and I do not claim to have the answers...rather my opinions and this may be a bad example but, I hope you get the point I am trying to convey.
What I do know...is that when you choose to allow God into your life, good things happen. I used to have your attitude so I think I know a little bit about that perception and I'm no bible thumper but I have personally experienced his hand in my life, and I say he is quite real. Too many things I couldn't ignore that happened as a result of his grace. I just had to "look"...to pay attention to see it. I then realized he was there all along.
    I suggest you pay attention.

If there wasn't a God there wouldn't be anything, including free will.

Youre basing that on faith. There is no proof.
