Can you believe this guy?: http://cnsnews.com/news/article/us-capitol-christmas-tree-pays-homage-obama-not-jesus
I'm sure that Jesus is looking down on this from his perch at the right hand of the Father and saying WTF? I hope this doesn't cause him to rethink the whole salvation thing. I'm thinking it's more likely that he is simply amazed that people don't have better things to do in His name to get in a twist about Christmas tree ornaments. Btw, Christians themselves have historically not been universally on board with trees or the whole Christmas thing period and some still aren't. http://www.religioustolerance.org/xmas_tree.htm
This too is true. Then again, some Christians don't approve of dancing, singing, playing cards, celebrating birthdays, lending money, or drinking alcohol in any quantities. I do think it's a shame that Obama feels the need for any self-aggrandizement, as he frequently does and I'm shocked that he has not yet broken his arm patting himself on the back, BUT I doubt he was aware of any ornaments that made it onto the tree or of any that failed to make it.
Why must Christians try to interject Christ and Christianity into Christmas and Christmas trees. Next thing you know they will be trying to take over Easter.
There were celebrations and religious rituals during these seasons long before the Christians came along, but the Christians hijacked them along with many of the symbols and customs that went with them.
Symbols and doo-dads are just so much fluff. Who needs these symbols? Christ, if one believes in him, is in the heart. Personally, I believe in him and don't care one whit about all the symbols and imagery. More than anything, I couldn't care less how Obama wants to decorate his Christmas tree, but I DO think it's a bit narcissistic to have an ornament like that (IF he knows it's there).
How did you miss this. BO now considers himself the fourth best president ever. Oh! Really? http://newsbusters.org/blogs/pj-gla...-out-laughable-obama-claim-4th-greatest-presi BTW, there is a film clip of him saying so. Just for Q;
So let me get this straight... There are no religious symbols on a public Christmas tree but there is one ornament of the current commander-in-chief and this serves as one more reason to criticize Obama. I'm pretty sure that we have separation of Church and State in this country so what religious symbols would y'all be willing to tolerate on a public tree?
I think you need to read again what the provision for the separation of church and state was all about.
And I am sure a lot of great people have had their birthdays celebrated in the middle of January throughout the millenniums that this earth has been turning. But those events aren't what we celebrate on MLK Day in our times.
Let's see, I know the Jews celebrate something around this time but I think a Menorah would not need to be on the Christmas Tree since we already have a National Menorah. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local...-of-hannukah/2011/12/20/gIQAn2kx7O_video.html But it probably would look snazzier if some of the candles were replaced by lighted letters...maybe an O, a B, a couple A's and an M...arranged appropriately, of course. I am sure the Jews would be jiggy with it.
True, but I don't think MLK's birthday was a conscious effort to co-opt existing non-Christian midwinter and spring celebrations along with much of their symbolism.
It seems like a conscious effort to co-opt existing middle of January birthdays to me. And many entities are co-opting the Christian Christmas into a generic, months-long orgy of consumer spending. But none of these co-optings really have anything to do with the fact that, today - at this point in time, it is still a Christmas Tree in the Capitol. http://www.aoc.gov/cc/grounds/hol_trees/Capitol-Christmas-Tree-2011.cfm Just like the other link I posted is the National Menorah and not just a holiday candle display.
Yeah, the tree is fine with me as long as it has lights on it and it sparkles. I'm totally into the winking blinking glittery sparklies. If people want to get upset about the ornaments that's their issue.
